    • Lodged a PayPal dispute. Hopefully I get my money back. This company is a scam. Now the 14 September (2 months) and the order still hasn't been shipped. Hopefully they also delete my account so I don't hear from them again.

  • I got my unit today, it felt so light that I seriously thought it was a quality control defect and they didn't put the internals inside! I was relieved when I found the unit to be working fine!

How do you verify that you've received the correct processor version? and GB ethernet? I tested streaming a 1080p movie from my NAS on Kodi and seemed to stream flawlessly, so that was my test.

Navigating with the remote is quite frustrating at times. I mainly want to use it for Google Movies/TV, Netflix, Hulu. Navigating the Google Movies app is a pain. It's not something I could hand over to my folks to use. I wonder if there's a solution to make remote navigation better?

    • For navigation I use an air mouse. Either that or a regular wireless mouse would work fine.

      • Is there another solution that involves using the same remote? Like a skin/launcher that is remote friendly?

        • +2

SquareHome seems to be very popular with a lot of people. I use Smart Launcher myself, but that might not quite be user friendly enough for an airmouse.

          Some others that I haven't tried are…

          TVLauncher
          HALauncher

Or just searching Launcher in GPLAY will give you a lot of options.

        • +1

A different launcher would help with the home screen UI but not in apps. The supplied remote doesn't have pause/play buttons even.

        • @badarz: yup very true

        • @Clear: Thanks, I'll check them out

        • @badarz: Most include basic remotes to try and get you to buy their better one.

    • Unfortunately I don't know of a way to test the actual ethernet speed, but I'm sure someone else here will. I'll check out some reviews later and see if it's mentioned. I haven't heard anything about the processor being incorrect either as it's always been RK3368.

I use the Logitech K400R on mine and there is usually a deal here for it. Null Keyboard is a good app if you plug in a keyboard as it'll hide the onscreen one too.

      • It's been mentioned on freaktab, with a quote from Tronsmart that it is a 1.2 GHz processor not a 1.6 GHz as specified. Also the firmware is 32 bit.

        • That's why Rockchip advertised up to 1.5GHz on the 3368 and with root overclocking is possible. Firmware being 32bit isn't really a surprise to me considering that all of those Windows tablets are 32bit with 64bit processors… but still a bit of a disappointment.

Tronsmart have an app to remote control the R68 from an Android phone or tablet. It's not as convenient as a dedicated air mouse or keyboard remote, but functionally better than the Tronsmart supplied remote.

It also has a game-controller mode.

      Download app RKRemoteControlGeneralCastV2.0.3.apk: http://www.tronsmart.com/?p=1425

It's not available on Google Play AFAIK, so you'll need to side load it.

      User manual: http://download.xtreamer.net/Firmware/multi-console/files/RK…

  • Would the harmony 650 provide more functionality ?

    • I'm using my Harmony 350 with it.. The R68 wasn't in the Logitech database so all I could do was replicate what the included remote does by teaching it the commands.

      • Did you try the Orion R28 remote settings from Harmony?

        • Yeah, they didn't work.

        • @shiznit:

Thanks, I have it setup in a room without a harmony remote so never got round to testing.

        • @shiznit:

Dog ate my remote today and destroyed it. After some detective work, Beelink R89 worked.

        • @chalkhead: Do the media buttons work? If they do I'll give it a go. Thanks

        • @shiznit:

Give it a go. It's every bit as good as the original (before it was eaten).

        • @chalkhead: what I meant is do you get extra functions that the R68 remote doesn't have, like play, pause and track skip buttons?

        • @shiznit: I don't know how to do it. Please share if you do? I'm just using the arrows to navigate through. ;)

  • Anyone got foxtel go app working with this? I get an error telling me to turn off allshare which I can't seem to do.

  • I can't seem to get Google Movies/TV to work for anything already purchased in my library. When I watch a trailer, I get black screen with the audio playing. Anyone get it to work?

My unit didn't seem to need a firmware update to get Netflix to work, as it said it was up to date already. Netflix stream started ok, though it didn't switch to the best quality in the few mins I tested it. Whereas my Amazon FireTV goes to the best quality very quickly.

    • +1

Tronsmart haven't got to fixing Google Movies yet, but the Wasser ROM has it fixed.

  • Got mine today, pretty happy with it apart from all the scratches from them testing the ports.

  • +1

Is it possible to put the Android TV OS on this? Like what's on the Nexus player?

    • +1

If a dev decides to port it, but I've only seen it ported to the Ouya so far.

  • hey clear, do you know if you can get a better power adaptor thing for this? the one supplied is so dodgy it disconnects really easily. is there a aussie plug available which we can simply slide into the adaptor available?

    • If you can find one somewhere that'll fit with the same voltage etc you'll be fine, or a decent travel adapter.

I personally use a XiaoMi power strip as the Chinese plug is compatible with ours and it has 3 in 1 AU/EU/US sockets.

    • +1

It's a terrible fit and quite dodgy, but it is fixable with a hot glue gun. I ran a bead around the seam and it's now quite solid. It's definitely not as good as having a clip on adapter but without that or purchasing a total replacement, it's a decent solution.

Decided to take a pic, not exactly pretty but does the job well.

      • Lol… not a bad effort… but for me i just went to my lical korean grocery store and they had a plug converter for 3 bucks… fits nice and tight too. Same as thise u see on ebay for around the same price.

  • Received mine this morning! :D

    • ditto :)

  • Received my unit today.

Doesn't seem to like my Yamaha home theatre system. Works fine if I plug it into my TV direct but then I get crappy sound.

Is this something that a software update might fix? I am on 200L1.

  • still waiting for mine…. such a long wait sure does remove the enthusiasm for a new gadget to play with

  • I got mine and like everyone else when you enable AC3 and DTS passthrough it causes Kodi to stutter every couple of seconds. There is no way to fix this other than to disable passthrough which mean no ac3 or dts sound.

My workaround was set "external player" to mxplayer in Kodi

    http://kodi.wiki/view/External_players

Mxplayer does pass ac3 & dts to my receiver via spdif and has smooth video playback. I had to change the default output device to "spdif" in settings -> sound.

Mxplayer does not support smb:// links so I had to mount my media share. First in supersu settings disable mount separation and then I added this command as root startup using a shell command app:

    mount -t cifs -o noperm,username=root,password=admin,uid=1001,gid=1001 //192.168.1.10/media /mnt/internal_sd/media

Then in Kodi you simply add a local video source from the internal sdcard. Once all that was done I could play all my video from inside of kodi with mxplayer.

The other major problem with the box is the power on button on the remote does not power on the device so I am leaving mine on 24/7.

The new minix amlogic box would have been a better option for only $10 more ($60)

Overall it was a PITA to setup the box to the point where it was useable.

    • Yeah, the remotes aren't going to win any awards soon… and by "soon" I mean "ever". Sounds like you've got a faulty power button. Warranty time. Or you can open it and try cleaning the contacts. Or live with it, which is sounds like you're doing. I'm looking for a suitable air mouse replacement still.

Also, this is probably not helpful, but MX Player can play from SMB servers using an ES File Explorer HTTP service. No idea how to launch that from Kodi :(

      • He's talking about the power button on the remote - which isn't faulty. The remote can't be used to turn on the device.

        • Ok. My bad.

Curious why the need to power it all the way off every time anyway? Why not put it in sleep/stand-by with the remote? Thanks.

  • [wrong place]

  • +1

I contacted GeekBuying through the Tronsmart forum and they're sending me a power supply with the correct au plug. This is the one they should have supplied: http://forum.tronsmart.com/media/kunena/attachments/609/Aust…

I suggest anyone not happy with their power supply contact them too

    • I could be wrong, but the decision was made after customs in an unnamed country contacted Geekbuying and said they need to supply a power supply that will work locally and not an adapter.

      • +1

Aaand I am. It was Tronsmart who was contacted by local customs. They've passed it onto all of their resellers now, so you should be able to get a replacement for free.

        • Wait… what?

I got the adapter thingy that goes over the 2 circular prongs plug (which feels quite loose when plugged in tbh) rather than what's shown above, should I be contacting geekbuying/tronsmart for a proper replacement plug or something?

        • @Gazette: This I would like to know…. Don't like how dodgy the adapter feels :(

        • @Gazette:

It sounds like you haven't removed the already attached adapter before putting on the au one. Remove the au one and have a good look at it, there's already one attached (with round prongs) which slides off and you then swivel out two flat prongs which the au adapter then goes on. It's a bit more stable but still nowhere as good as having the proper adapter.

I glued my au adapter on which got rid of all the free play and it's tons better but I'd still prefer to get the proper adapter or better still, the au plugpack.

        • +1

@Gazette: Contact Geekbuying. They know about it.

        • I emailed GeekBuying last week requesting a replacement. No reply since. Has anyone had any success on this? Thanks.

        • +2

@surethang: Send me your order number. I'll ask them.

        • @foobar:

I've tried that actually, removing the original adapter it came with and putting the au adapter directly over the base plug (except I don't want to use glue) and it's actually worse, just a slight tap/movement will turn off the box, it's actually more stable with the au adapter over the 2 circular prong plug, even if it's extra long and just as wobbly, but at least it doesn't turn off the box from the slightest tap.

Well, time to contact geekbuying I guess, preparing myself for the copy and paste responses, if I ever get a response that is…

        • +1

@Gazette: If you think you're not going to get a response then let me know, so I can ask someone directly.

        • +1

          @Clear:

You sir, deserve a medal. Really appreciate what you're doing for us.

What should I PM/message you with? the order number I had for the R68?

EDIT: msg with order number sent

        • @Clear:

Ive also contacted them… will let you know if I dont receive a reply

        • I received the reply below from GeekBuying. (Thanks, Clear.)

I've done some searching on eBay, but I can't find the type of adapter that securely clips/slides into the power transformer bracket, making it one solid unit. (See http://forum.tronsmart.com/media/kunena/attachments/609/Aust…)

Yes, I could just buy a universal travel adapter, but that's pretty much what GeekBuying provided originally, so it could end up being just as loose and dodgy as the one supplied by them.

Any ideas on what to search for to find the actual item that GeekBuying should send me? Or better still, any actual eBay listings? Is such a thing even available separately? Thanks.

          Hi Customer
Sorry for the problem you met
          1. How about we refund you 3 dollars or 5 USD coupon to make up you. As you know the adapter is too small to easy to get lost during shipping. If we only send the adapter. How about you buy it from ebay in your country? So you will get it fast.
2.If you or your friend have new order number here, please ask the online service to help add your AU adapter to the new order.
For this little thing ,the shipping fee is expensive and easy to loss without a tracking number
Thanks for your cooperation in advance
          Hope you can understand
          Feel free to connect us.
          Best regards

@surethang: Finding one on eBay is going to be difficult. It might be worth contacting Tronsmart directly and seeing if they will send you the correct adapter instead.

        • @surethang:

I got the EXACT same response..

too small so could get lost… but I assume if I ordered a similar sized adapter from their site they would be happy to send me one

        • what is the procedure to get the free replacement?

        • @SBOB: Try emailing [email protected] and see what they say.

        • @Clear: So after a bit of back and forth emailing with GeekBuying last month, they kindly sent me an Australian power pack. Thanks again, Clear, for all your help and suggestions.

        • +1

@surethang: No worries. I'm glad you got one in the end.

        • @Clear:

I didn't even get a response to my email.

        • @Clear:

I got nothing out of them so ended up being offered a $3 refund from geekbuying.

Not enough to get a new adapter, but enough to know that buying from geekbuying wont be high on the priority list in the future ;)

        • @SBOB: That really sucks, but Dick Smith does have a lot of international adapters on sale for a couple of dollars, so it might be enough to cover that in future.

  • I am using spdif audio and its pretty buggy. Randomly I get no sound out via spdif. I suspect it is due to a software bug in the rom or soc.

Abc Kids app is glitchy…..same with abc iview.

    sbs app seems ok

I wast hoping this box would replace my aging atom running openelec/kodi but I will most likely just buy a new motherboard.

Android is just not ready for full media center duties yet I reckon esp for hd audio…. HD audio gets down sampled to 16/48 in kodi which does not happen in linux.

    • "HD audio gets down sampled to 16/48 in kodi which does not happen in linux."

I was unaware of this, I am running Kodi on a NUC in windows would the same issue occur or is this just relevant to Android boxes?

The way you worded it was ambiguous so I am unsure?

Also how do you check this? does anyone know?

  • I am also finding the box will just not playback some videos….with any player. Like I setup my mythtv backend and it does not play recordings back even when my old galaxy s3 could do this with no problems.

Also the spdif is broken which is a pain for me because my amp is old and does not have hdmi. Spdif does weird things like no sound and in some games it causes them to stutter. The work around is to to send audio to TV via hdmi & then back out from the tv to amp via spdif but the problem is my TV does not pass through ac3 or dts.

Just to many issue to make this thing very usefull. I will probably just use it as a dedicate audio player & maybe for a game or two and get a new motherboard for my trusting Intel box.

  • Guess what everyone, I bought a Nexus Player and the user experience is so much better for what I want to use than this thing. Wish I could put that interface onto this thing.

  • I ran speedtest on the player and it says about 40mbit down. I have it connected via cat5e to my switch. So does this mean the network port is 100mbit? Thanks.

    • speedtest.net? That'll test your internet connection and not the speed of the device.

      • android app of speedtest on the device.

        I have a 100mbit down NBN connection.

on my Sony Xperia Z1 on Wifi G 2.4GHz- I get 27.14Mbps down and 2.38 Mbps up
        Wifi A 5GHz - 76.92Mbps down and 33.62Mbps up.

It is dependent on your device connection speed too.

        • As you're 100mbps NBN you're not going to be able to test if it's gigabit. Even though the device connection is a factor, it's mainly testing your internet speed. What you need to do is test the local network speed. There might be an app for it, but I don't know of one.

        • @Clear:
I thought the 1st batch came with 10Mbps network port.

        • @arinko: 100mbps for first batch and gigabit for second.

        • @Clear: Thanks for clearing it up. It doesn't matter to me. The gigabit switch recognises the port is a fast Ethernet network connection (100Mbps).
