  • No love for WA.

    Probably pressure you to sign up when you attend these free classes. I remember I redeem free gym sessions at plus fitness and they got me to fill up a form with all my details then kept on calling me everyday to get me to join. Was annoying.

    • You will be asked , but they have said that they no longer persist. These are usually a good way to join though, as often they waive both admin and joining fees by joining this way. But yeah I would only consider this if you want to join and want to have a negotiation aid, as I think they give better deals than if you call and start up cold. I could be wrong

        Those "admin and joining fees" are simply there to be removed if you are umming and erring and not signing the 12 month contract in order to use the gym for 1 month (hey I don't know you so I'm just assuming you do what 90% of people that sign do ;).

        The salesperson will act like they're doing you a solid by removing them, sometimes going off to "see their manager about a special deal" and so on.

        • +1

          That doesn't always happen. In my experience, I've never had the (steep) joining fee reduced, despite frequent and persistent attempts at negotiation.

          Side note: Why do gyms charge such outrageous joining fees and often no reasonable fees for casual users? They should really join the 21st century.

          @the urbanite:

          Why do gyms charge such outrageous joining fees and often no reasonable fees for casual users?

          Probably because that's the most profitable business strategy. They don't want people to actually use the gym, they want to oversell it to as many non-showing "customers" as possible.

      Nah they're doing it so you'll stink and buy their deodorant.

      Just block their number on your phone.

    So does this include gym use?

    Pressure-sales, here we come!

    Even $10/class is very cheap, so it's definitely a deal.

    • I don't see any evidence for that.

      • +2

        For what?
        It's not a charity. Converting these freebies into paying clients is very important to the gym.

    Classes are just for August

    • Guys, this is actually a pretty good deal. Once you've got your 10-pass from the desk, your class instructor is not going to care/know whether you're a paid member or not. Just show up to your room and off you go.

      The way some people here carry on, they make it sound like a Timeshare seminar.
      You're not required to provide your mobile and really, they only need to send you one email (the signup confirmation). So block them after or use a throwaway account.

    Heck, you can use a fake name on the sign process if you're so inclined..

    I know some of you are new to the gym, so have a look for yourself at the classes they offer: Most are 1-hour blocks.
    http://www.fitnessfirst.com.au/find-a-class/timetable/?rc=Tr…
    Classes repeat throughout the day from 6am to 10pm . You should have access to the shower rooms before/after.

    Popular classes include:
    * Cycling
    * Yoga
    * Pilates
    * Dances Classes and Boxing etc

    For maximum workout and Ozb cheapness, you could combine it with free week passes at nearby gyms.
    eg. Do your cardio warmup, then head over to your class.

    • You should have access to the shower rooms before/after.

      Do they have private unisex showers with locking doors?

      • I've never been to a gym or toilet block that doesn't have door locks. Its pretty standard, why?

        • But they aren't all unisex.

          One might want to take a friend in there to finish off a workout.

          AFAIK, Jetts and some other 24/7 gyms have unisex showers.

    Thanks free month of gym in the city at 3 locations nearby! :)

    • fyi, Its just access to the classes room. No access to the normal area. eg. weights/cardio . I'm guessing they have swipe entry between class rooms and the gym floor but would appreciate if a Fitness First member could confirm?

  • +1

    I presume you have to attend the classes? Can you just sneak out into the weights area?

  • Wouldn't advise going near a finance-first with a 40ft pole.

    • Never actually spent much time inside Fitness First, whats the specific issue?

      I avoided Finance First for ten years because a sleazeball gym rep tried to super hard to sell me a very overpriced 24-month contract. I was 17 in first-year uni and there with my dad.

      The rep was really full-on, talking about my weight issues and such and keeping us there forever.

  • I asked a reception guy at FF Indooroopilly and he seemed to think it was just for FF members. The card he gave me seemed to be about getting a stamp for every different class in order to go in to a prize draw - but for members only.
