Just take note they will very aggressively try to sell you their Dodo GoHub MP264 ADSL modem router when you sign up to their ADSL or NBN plans, and may even outright refuse to provide you any form of support if you use a non-Dodo modem. According to a lot of WP feedback here, here and here this seems like a massive push to try and get their customers to buy Dodo hardware instead of providing their own.

seems like a massive push to try and get their customers to buy Dodo hardware

Makes perfect business sense. Most companies use the automatic configuration servers. If the device is one of the ISP provided, they can pre provision your device. Makes it easy to troubleshoot, apply firmware upgrades etc.

This won't be the case if the modem is byo.

      • +1

hmm, in my opinion the problem with that approach is that you leave yourself in the total control of an ISP that has proven it doesn't give a damn.
We are with Clubtelco and while it's not as cheap they have been quite good.
Dodo manage the backend for CT, that's probably why our speeds have been dropping massively during peak periods in recent months
CT never try to push HW on us or refuse support because we didn't buy their hardware. They try to help even if they suspect our HW may be at fault.
Most ISP's don't even know/understand our HW and therefore don't supply anything like it, let alone support it.
Another issue associated with ISP supplied hardware is most have modified firmware (just like telco supplied smartphones).
That means if there's an important update for your HW, the maker creates a fix (hopefully) and then the ISP has to go thru their hoops before you get the fix = perhaps months/years.
No, wait it's even worse. Most ISP's don't bother with general firmware fixes, so in the event there's an important security patch released it probably can't be used until the ISP's firmware has been updated to the right level before being able to integrate the fix i.e. you have Buckley's of getting it in this lifetime….they will try and sell you new gear and make a profit out of you again for their lack of concern for your loyalty.

        • Speaking from experience, the CSR's don't have an effing clue whether it's their router or your own.

I had one lady tell me that my router wouldn't work for NBN because Dodo's modems come with "built-in codes" that enable it to decypher the NBN signal… ! Yeah ok…

You also run into the really, really annoying problem that…. IF you happen to need to reset your modem to factory defaults, you don't know what your password is.

So you have to ring up their support line to get it and half the time they give you your username/password for their website which is a different account… nightmare.

        • @Deviner: Yep, any interaction of a non-sales nature with the ISP's for the masses tends to end up causing frustration and alienation.
They have a script and their guidelines, anything out side of that (like say a customer who has a clue) is treated with contempt and forced to jump through all their BS hoops.
We have just cutover to OnTheNet today, what a pleasure (albeit an overly long limbo due to Telstra), they actually knew what was going on when I called customer service as we'd been down for 3 hours. It's great talking to someone who A. understands English well B. knows what they're talking about and doesn't give you the standard BS.
Our sync is 20% higher than it was on the same copper and throughput is through the roof compared to ClubTelco (used to be good, seems DoDo are taking more control).
The only downside is that we have a 300GB peak cap (not peaked cap mind!) instead of the unlimited plan we had with CT. BUT what good is an unlimited plan if you can't get enough throughput to use it?

I am with DODO from the beginning , now the service is getting terribly bad. If you want to experience give a call to their tech support. You will be spending hours.. You may get unlimited but speed is extremely slow. Exchange is less than 1km, after months battle they accept this slowness is due to congestion :).. Offered me 1/2 price for now till I get NBN.

      • +4

I agree with this, speeds suck with Dodo!

      • Be wary about changing to NBN with Dodo. Slower speeds for the same price as ADSL2+.

        • I had NBN with Dodo in Perth and got 94mbit down and 36up …. never had a single problem with it.

ADSL on the other hand is a completely different kettle of fish.

        • @Deviner: "Slower speeds for the same price"

$39.90 Big Fibre 50GB (25GB On Peak / 25GB Off Peak) 12/1Mbps Data is down and up.
$39.85 ADSL2+ 3TB Metro 3TB (Peak / Off peak) ADSL2+ (Up to 20Mbps download connection speed) Data is down only.

          And much less data too.

        • @Tiggrrrrr: Ok I see what you mean now - wasn't sure what you were referring to before.

You're right, those $39.90 deals are absolute crap that you'd want to be absolutely mad to sign up to.

All of the "Tier 1" packs they offer for NBN are absolutely pointless in my eyes, so I never even looked at them.
12down/1up is nearly half the speed you'd expect from a good DSL connection…

It's like buying a Ferrari and replacing the engine with something from a Micra.

I had Dodo 100mbit NBN for $89.99 per month which had 2TB limit… that was considerably cheaper for that kind of limit than literally every other provider (bar maybe TPG) and the speed was just as good as every other (more expensive) provider.

        • +1

@Deviner: Lucky for me most of my bandwidth is used up by OzBargain…

        • @Tiggrrrrr: Haha, you and me both. :)

    • I moved from IInet to Dodo earlier this year to take advantage of their Xbox One bundle. The sign up process was drawn out and painful, a lot of chasing up Manila on the progress of my order as well as the delivery of the Xbox. They switched me over without letting me know my new userid and password so I was without internet for a couple hours while I was with tech support, but they had no problem supporting and helping me configure my BYO modem (my old DLINK) to get the new connection up.

All is well now and I'm gaming away on my new console, and speeds are the same as my old IInet connection. I haven't had the issues I've read about on Whirlpool, and because I'm paying way less a month I just take it on the chin if I ever have to call them about something, knowing that I'll probably have a long hold time and have to explain everything twice, lol.

  • +1

I'm with dodo and they've been happy with me to use my modems. I've used two different brands whilst I've been with them (D-Link and Billion). Mind you, I've been with them for many years, so maybe their insistence on using their own hardware is a new thing.

And I agree that if all you do is surfing and YouTube etc then dodo is fine.

My friend called dodo for this 29.90 connection, they said we can only offer you 29.90 if u take your land line with us aswell otherwise its 39.90

  • +3

    https://www.spintel.net.au/products/broadband

You would need a landline connection anyway, an unlimited bundle for $54.95 is the cheapest I found - that too with no lock in contracts and set up fees when you transfer an active phone number. I'm surprised, this beats TPG

    • +2

Spintel Broadband has poor reviews on whirlpool. Their mobile plans and service is pretty good though.

    • +2

Is anybody on Spintel? There is a $25 referral.
Looking at options in next week or 2 as moving.
Not ready for it yet, so pm me and I will confirm at a later date

I think all these are about the same. OK when it goes well, crap when it doesn't.
But just not sure about dodo. Do they buy bandwidth off Optus, or would any optus reseller have similar speed issues?

Spintel offer no contract or sign up - what is there to lose?

Currently on Belong, service is poor on occasion, but support is good.
Will go from $80 inc free local calls to $55 for unlimited
Not sure if new address is on optus or telstra, both Belong and spintel (urban) say service is available.

Asked belong to transfer and they say no line in showing, so makes me think Optus. But Belong won't charge for a new line, which might be worth getting first.

    • +1

Never heard of Spintel. Anybody with them? How's are they?
I assume the speed would be as good as TPG/DODO or any other Telstra reseller?

Do your research with Line rental prices

    What's yours say?

  • +1

Telstra $22 is the cheapest. I rarely use landline anyway.

    • +1

      Not any more, $23.95 now

    • Telstra as an unadvertised $15 plan that people have had success getting if you ask for it.

You're meant to sign up with bigpond but I have had it for a year with no issue.

      • No luck with that here. Was I meant to ask for a specific plan?

        • My latest bill calls it "Telstra Voice Light".

  • +3

I am with Dodo for years .. no problem with them. BUT I am out of the contract for years too, They charge me about $10 more for line rental(because no discount for no contract customer), I don't know for long time. Until I check deals recently from you guys, I just move to Spintel last month, I can keep the same phone number, use my existing OLD netcomm modem (10 year old),It still can connect my 5 notebook, 4 smartphones and steam from my TVPAD3, so far no problem. Strange things is I try contact with some other ISP (months ago)2 of them said I can not keep the same phone number, so I end up stay with Dodo.

  • I have naked ADSL from Dodo for $57.80/month - would I be able to switch to this plan?

    • No. This plan assumes you pay line rental to another provider.

The people its trying to target is adults who live at home with there parents and there parents wont let them touch there home phone carrier therfore you get standalone dsl with Dodo. hope it makes sense…just one e.g

  • Was managed to get the unlimited plan for 59.90(including line rental) and first month free + a $200 Woolworth gift card from them… Came out waiting for ages to install and the called me on a daily basis, finally gave up. I'm in Sydney metro area..

  • Appears to be a $29.00 Churn Fee for no contract.

  • Existing user, changed plan (took a few goes for it to go through) - much like all data in Dodo really. Hopefully the $10 discount will go through on my billing cycle,

    Cheers!

    • Hey buddy - can you send me a referral code?

      • Where from?

        • Talking to Dodo Customer Service they said in accounts management there is a'Promotions' tab and you should be able to get one there.
