Great price .. but would be %$#%$# painful if faulty.

Patriot SO-DIMM 1.35V (Low Voltage) 4G DDR3 1600 memory can be sourced via MSY for $37 AUD.

It's not a huge saving, but buying from Aliexpress will have it's risks. For one you don't even know what brand of RAM you're going to get and there's no warranty. The picture shown by the vendor is only a placeholder and the model number shows that it's a Samsung DDR3 1066 2GB module.

There's also no mention of whether it is low voltage memory — you'll need low voltage RAM for a lot of Intel-powered notebooks / ultrabooks / two in ones nowadays. That includes the low-end Acers that everybody has been buying lately.

    • The product details page says 2 years warranty but not sure how easy the return policy is..

    • Yeah… The place holder image with different information makes worried.

  • Will this work on this laptop? Or wrong ram type?

Never heard about this brand. It's unnecessary to have a unknown brand for $10 cheaper which may lead to panic in the future.

  • $42 for Kingston ram delivered for an AUS stock as opposed to waiting 2-4 weeks from Aliexpress which may be faulty is a bit of a risk. Or this one for $36: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Qumox-4GB-DDR3-DDR3L-1600MHz-PC3-…

    • Thanks a lot. Let me check.

    DDR3

I always think it stands for 'Dance Dance Revolution 3'.

    • Damn you, now that's all I can see now too :-(

  • RAM is at its lowest price in years. Quite a few people suggesting it's time to stock up.

    • +2

stock up? how many laptops do people have?

Sorry, I mean that they are saying it's a good time to purchase. By Q3 they expect prices to rise again.

Last time I checked they didn't accept PayPal. I won't give my credit card details to them.

    • I'm the same. I wanted to purchase something recently though so I just bought one of those one-off load-and-go credit cards from Woolies. Worth it for the peace of mind.

I've spent thousands of dollars and I've been fine.. They've got a pretty good dispute system too. This is on DHgate though.

  • is it ok to use a 1600mhz ram stick when my mac mini mid 2011 takes 1333 MHz ?

    • +1

Yes. The higher speed RAM will simply be used at the lower speed.

However: DIMMs with the following features will not work with these Mac mini models: Registers or buffers, PLLs, ECC, Parity, EDO RAM (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202283)

Therefore: Because the RAM of OP has ECC function, don't buy this RAM. Also, as a general rule, don't buy any RAM for a Mac unless it is specifically advertised as compatible. Don't trust the product description that states: "compatible with all mortherboard".

ebay can be decent for ram, you need patience and luck though… it's ebay!

in the past i have bought:
    4gb ddr3 1333mhz 1.35v for $17 (pure luck)
    2x2gb ddr3 1600mhz 1.35v for ~$15
    1gb ddr3 1066mhz 1.5v for $2
    6x2gb ddr3 1333mhz 1.5v for ~$30

Does anyone have old laptop DDR2 Ram modules they want to sell. I'm fixing up all these old laptops to give to disabled people that need them.
Yes they are older laptops but hey all work fine, just think an extra nudge of memory may make them more usable.

    • I have a stash of 2GB DDR3 1066mhz modules. No DDR2 unfortunately.

    • Since you are fixing it and giving it for disabled people, I personally would suggest moderators to run an event for the ozbargain community to gather our power together and assist.

I personally got none. only got my current laptop here running DDR3. But I am sure many of us got some DDR2 sitting around unused. I would be happy to contribute a McD's meal for jd4free for his effort if this event would happen. (would love to contribute more $, sorry, short on $ myself too).

Just a thought. It's always good to contribute back.

    • I have 2 1GB DDR2 modules I just removed from my HP laptop recently. Working condition, upgraded to 4gb.

    • It is strange how DDR3 seems to be much cheaper than the DDR2. Not sure why this is the case…there must be heaps everywhere. I bought 10x 2GB DDR3 from DS years ago for $2 bucks, they made great gifts… until I realised I was the one that had to install them all.
Yeah an event would be good idea, sometimes difficult to get people to contribute these days. I can understand why, we're all bogged down drowning in the latest technologies, sometimes we forget to just stop n have an actual face to face chat.
lets start something like a "Dump you draws day" event !
If it still works why crush it, honestly Office works don't really want it either !
    • It is strange how DDR3 seems to be much cheaper than the DDR2.

Supply vs demand. Once they stopped manufacturing DDR2, the availability of DDR2 memory becomes limited and the resellers increase the price.

You can see how supply and demand affects the pricing of RAM — back in 2012 when one of the biggest RAM manufacturers went bankrupt (Elpida) and one of Hynix's production plants was destroyed in a fire in 2013. This caused a massive increase in memory at the start of 2013.

I would advise against buying RAM from China (including Alibaba website), around five years ago I bought few 4GB sticks of Kingston RAM from China, every single one of them failed memory test, lesson learned for me. So although price wise this might look like a bargain, it is penny wise pound foolish type of a deal.

  • All your comments looks valid & informative. But unfortunately I placed order before posting. :-

  • With so many well-known names available in the RAM market, why do you want to trust a brand that doesn't even have its own website?
