Shopping Express will have it for $269 soon.

    • Only 50 units.

Futu Online is Shopping Express by the way.

      • +1

        Really?!

        • Futu Online were LogitechShop if I remember correctly.

Good to know. Plus shipping which is $11.45 to me on the Gold Coast, so that makes it a $7 difference. No cashback with SE? More like $5 difference.

Weighing that up with the more hassle to buy within a 1 hour period and possibility of missing out (says 200 units).

  • tempting except for the high power consumption, it's a 35w processor so not sure what the power bill is like if it runs 24x7 at home.

    • +2

For a microserver you won't find any better than this

      http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/6104-power…

    • Assuming the device draws around 35 watts average (sometimes more, sometimes less) 24x7 at 30c per KWh will cost around $7 a month.

The CPU would rarely reach its max draw of 35w but based on reports, once you put a couple of drives in there, plus accounting for the PSU/mobo/RAM etc, 35w is typical for the whole device. Course that depends on your particular usage.

  • Can this CPU be replaced for the xenon CPU 35w? Will replace my n54l

    • +2

I currently have an Intel Xeon E3-1265L V2 running fine in mine.

    • Yes you can

I bought a G1610T CPU from a guy who replaced his CPU in Microserver with a Xeon CPU a couple months ago.

I am running a desktop server with G1610T CPU and 2 X 4TB Seagate desktop HDD, power consumption is around 35W.

    • I bought a 2nd hand E3-1220L to run in mine. CPU is 17W if I remember rightly.

  • +1

At least you're not ordering it from HP. so there is a far better chance of receiving it….

  • What's the power consumption of the processor in the n54l?

  • How do you get the 2% cashback?

    • No idea either

    • Need to go to cashrewards.com.au, then sign in. Then find the eBay deal and click the link. It will take you to ebay. Anything you buy after that you will get 2% cash back.

  • Hmm.. From the manual:

"To install a supported Linux OS, see the OS documentation.
IMPORTANT: This server supports an AMD embedded SATA RAID controller. However, in the
server, this controller is not supported under the Linux operating system. For more information on
the embedded SATA RAID controller, see the AMD website (http://www.amd.com)."

It apparently only supports Raid 1,0 and 10, but does this mean it is unsupported in Linux unless the Gurus save the day?

    • +1

I'm running Debian on a 1610T. Dunno about the RAID controller but I always use MD software RAID anyway. All the disks work fine.

  • Looks nice and cheap, can I install plex server? But the supported raids aren't good

    • +2

I run OpenMediaVault on mine, and it has a nice Plex Server plugin.

      • i have N40L (great little server) mine running ubuntu wheezy and installed OMV on top of it, so I can install other apps easily alongside OMV

        • Ah forgot this comes without o/s.
          Thanks guys.

        • lol im using the N40L.
          Great server.

Hmmm not sure if i should upgrade to the Gen8

    • I run a Plex server on my N54L and it works fine. Can stream wireless to my Roku 1080p no worries.

  • Shame its only 16GB max .. got that in my N40L .. whats the next best Microserver that can take at least 32GB pls ?

    • I think they say its 16GB max, but do a search on the web to see if anybody was game enough to get 32gb into it.
I know in the old microservers you could do it.

      • I'll have a look but the n40l was only rated to 8gb but i got 16 in with a modded BIOS

        • I think its actually a hard limit on 16GB due to the processor and chipset.
          But i maybe wrong.

  • Nice, just bought one. Anyone know where's a good price for a suitable Xeon cpu and 16gb of ecc ram?

    • +2

make sure you buy non-buffered ecc ram if you want to go down the ecc path.
Buffered ECC ram will not work.

Might want to check if it supports non-ecc ram too. I know the older Microservers supported non-ecc.

Anybody know if these use the normal PC3 or PC3L?

    • +1

Check my link below to the HomeServerShow forum - has a list of RAM tested to work (and a few to avoid!). Just throw the model numbers into StaticIce and see what comes up cheapest.

    • Has anyone received a shipping notification yet?
On the eBay listing it said would ship within 24 hours, and Fast n Free shipping ETA Thursday 2nd.

  • +1

FYI lots of info/links for the Gen8 Microserver, including the latest iLO/NIC/RAID firmware from 15th June.
Please excuse all the exclamation marks.. this guy gets excited.

  • Thanks OP, not going to risk missing out at Shopping Express, grabbed one.

Will be upgrading my N54L :D

    • Same story, I grabbed this to upgrade my N40L.

  • Hi can anyone please recommend the best suitable hard drives - 2 to 4TB's

    • +1

We red 3tbs on sale at shopping express tomorrow night for $139 are great value!

      Edit: Damnit, not associated..

      • Cheers mate, I just had a look at their newsletter.

  • What uses do people use this server for?

Does this come with graphics card or built in video card?

How much would it cost to build your own?

Would it be better to build your own server?
Which would have less limitation in terms of size, ram, video card size etc..

    • People do all sort of things with this server, torrent, media server, backups,,,etc. Just a VGA output, so you need to use a Graphics card to get HDMI or other features.

Not sure of the cost to build your own but have not seen anything come close to this price range. Just read specs on HP's website and most of the answers are there.

      • yes, but there is alot of limitations with the server..

like you need low profile video cards and shorter cards..

also need to buy specific ECC ram..

Would building your own server cost that much more than $300?
but you would get more freedom to upgrade or choose more different parts.

        • There is no reason to put a graphics card in one of these, you aren't going to be able to use it as a rendering farm. ECC ram is completely necessary if you want less risk of data loss.

        • @algy:

yes, but if want to put in an card that supports hdmi to use as a media player etc..

          All adds up in cost.

Just wondering if we can just build our own server for not much more money than this.
But it would allow us more freedom to upgrade

        • @tyler.durden: You don't really use these as a media server, use this to serve video to your media server.

  • Do you guys consider this HP Gen8 deal better than the TS140 one from last week? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/199434
I'll be mainly using it for Plex via chromecast, streaming to 1080p to 1 device (maybe 2 devices max in the future). I think the TS140 would have been overkill?

    • +5

I think the HP looks cuter.

      • HAHAHAHHA! i totes approve this reasoning. haha

    • i rather the ts140 cos you can add more expansion cards

      specs is better
      4gb ram
      more usb ports
      case is more roomier

you get dvd drive as well

    • I currently use mine for the exact same thing (although have a Xeon E3-1265L V2 in it) and it is perfect. As mentioned in another post, I have OpenMediavault with the Plex Media Server plugin and bittorrent client and it has never missed a beat. It was a bit more trickier than my N40L to setup and I am still running both. Love the small size and the easy to access HDD bays as I run it headless under a desk and out of sight. Just remote in using the Web interface to set things up. Easiest NAS/Media server I have ever run

      • Where do you get the Xeon E3-1265L V2 or E3-1220L chips? I am planning to set up a micro-server for storing camera footage from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/195865 but need a bit more grunt than the standard CPU for encoding and motion detection.
I've been looking on StaticIce and eBay but can not seen any of the compatible Xeon chips.

Currently have an N36. Here is an interesting graph comparing Processors from N36, 1610T and Xeon
        CPU Compare

      • Cheers man I'm gonna commit finally! haha

  • I want a NAS with a little more grunt. Since the cost of a NAS (eg. QNAP) with either a celeron or i3 cpu costs way more, im considering buying this HP Gen8. Has what is is like running Xpenology?

  • Can you install a 2.5" drive into the dvd bay for OS?

  • I just pulled the trigger and ordered one. $292 delivered (how did OP get $287?) - plus $7.30 cashback via CR in a few weeks makes $285. About $6 more than the SE offer later tonight but saves waiting around.

  • Yay my Gen8 has arrived (quick too, picked up in Sydney yesterday morning, arrived on the Gold Cosat before lunchtime today). Thanks Futu.
Cant wait to get home to check it out.

  • i got mine the next day of being shipped. they use fastway… just waiting for my xeon E3-1265LV2 (brand new… dont ask ), the floppy power to sata for SSD in the ODD slot…. and P222 smart array card and ill be getting her setup with Windows Server 2012 R2.

You can also buy a tray that slots in the side and you can place two more hdds in it…

i will be repalcing the PSU unit with a PicoPSU… so i might try to squeeze another 2 drives making 8 drives + 1 ssd in it haha!!!

    • Are you getting the FDD to SATA power adaptor off eBay linked above?
How much is the P222 costing and what advantages over the onboard one? (RAID5 is one I assume)

For now Im just going to install Xpenology (Synology OS) to run it as a 2-3 drive NAS - and I believe Synology manages the disks directly (software RAID) so I need to keep RAID card disabled anyway.

      • The Gen8 doesnt have an on-board raid that supports Raid 5…. so software it is. the reason why i like the P222 it has 2x sas = 8x sata hdd's which you can join up. so what you can do (if you dont want to squish 8 hdds in there…) you can have an external box powering another 4x hdd's and use that array for a 1:1 backup (raid 1)

The P222 is about $400 new (from the states or 800 new here in Oz). there is one in West. Aust. one atm for about $380 used inc. p&h.

yes the same as link above FDD -> SATA.

    • Can I ask about the Xeon E3-1265L V2? ;)

      • i found it on an old german website. it turned out to only be $80 more than a used one on ebay. you're best bet would be to get those one from CLCEN from the us. he would require multiple people… i tried to organise it but the mods shut my post down.

        good luck
