Best Bang for Buck Mobile Phone

Hey guys,

There has been an onslaught of deals pertaining to new smart phones from China. These four has caught my attention:
1) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/199544 Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G Smartphone
2) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/198786 Elephone P8000
3) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/199212 Lenovo K3 Note 4G
4) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/199562 TCL 3S Octacore

My question is, which phone offers the best bang-to-buck ratio? Or am I missing another phone which is even better?
Thanks guys!

Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3 (If you're a Nexus 4 design fan, this one's pretty much a ripoff, so good for you)

OnePlus One (If you can get one)!

…pretty much all Chinese phones tbh. I think they are alright for quality.

Obviously the $19 Lumia 530 is best bang for buck.
But thats not really what you are asking, is it? Most people would be happy to pay 2 or 5 times that for something "50 % better" on some scale.
It comes down to what you value. Reliability and support must be low if you are looking at China imports?

Processing power per dollar the $40 Huawei Y550 from the recent Harvey Normal deal is the king:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/188848

The Huawei Y550 is same gaming speed as Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G, Motorolla Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S3 but those phones are more than three times the price. That's a price ratio of 3 to 4 times better than you listed.

Other than price reasons to choose the Huawei Y550 over the ones you listed are local warranty, superb battery life, unbreakable build quality. Help is in english from other Aussie owners in the Whirlpool forum.

The downside is it has a smaller screen than the ones you listed (4.5" 800x480 vs 5.5" 1920x1080). Huawei's camera is nothing special. The navigation buttons are not backlit.

Its almost impossible to beat a $40 Huawei Y550 for bang for buck or battery for buck. Like Manic said it depends on what you are looking for.

  • All good points, sorry that my post was vague. The Huawei Y550 is great but it is $99 currently with $50 credit, which does not interest me. In essence, that phone is $94 with the $5 discount.

All the OnePlus One phones are much more expensive than the ones I mentioned.

Not too worried about reliability and support, which is why I am opting for the China imports.

Looking for an upgrade over my ancient S2, so preferably better in all ways compared to the S2.

  • The only problem is no band 28 (700Mhz) on Chinese phones atm

  • I take it that is for mobile broadband? Is it a huge loss if it does not support band 28?

    • I'm not a specialist but I think "B28" is a new 700MHz 4G frequency that's about to be rolled out by Telstra and Optus:
      http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies

The idea is that the lower the radio frequency the better the signal can penetrate though hills and structures. The lower frequency bands are more useful for people in rural areas where there are few towers so the reach/coverage from each tower becomes more important.

If don't need 4G data speeds then B28 is nothing to worry about. If you are with Vodafone then your phone won't need B28.
