title/url updated

Hi all,
Not sure if this has been posted or discussed here before but hopefully people can find this post useful.

Similar to this deal, Melbourne City Library also offers a free access to the entire library of Lynda.com. Membership is free and open to the residents of Victoria.
You need Membership ID and a PIN to login via this website portal: https://www.lynda.com/portal/sip?org=melbourne.vic.gov.au
You can bookmark it for future use.
The conditions and requirements for membership can be found here. There is also a link there (Join Online) to sign up online.

Unfortunately, this membership doesn't include access via mobile apps.

  • Looks interesting

But it looks like you need to be a paying member first?

Oh I see where it can be confusing.
If you become a free member of Melbourne City Library (or already are one) they give you an ID number and PIN (which you choose).
You need to use their unique portal link I posted above to access the library. Wouldn't work if you go directly to lynda.com and try to log in.

Looks like Melbourne stepped up. Queenslanders have had access for while already.

  • Forgot to mention but I got my membership card today itself and it worked for me. So tried and tested. :)

Membership barcode is granted on the last step of online signup, and you choose your own PIN or it's the last 4 digits of your phone number.

No need to sign up for a card if you aren't visiting the library.

  • cheers

  • can people from sydney join (melb lib)?

    • I don't think so. Membership is only available to residents of Victoria. Maybe get a friend from melb to send you his member id and PIN?

      • but cant we apply online? there is an online form….I just havent tried going through it…

        • I applied for the online services, gotten a bar code with a pin. Subsequently I received a mail in the post to verify my VIC address.

  • Congrats to Victorians, excellent resource. For us in QLD library access doesn't work anymore so enjoy it while it lasts!

Merged from Free Lynda Access - City of Melbourne

Free access to Lynda.com online training through the Melbourne Library Service. All you need to do is to sign up for a membership (if you haven't already got one) and then logon through the Lynda button. This is fantastic, saving $40 a month. If Lynda and Udemy had a fight, Udemy would have both of it's arms ripped off, and Lynda would defecate down Udemy's throat, that's how good the courses are.

    Sign up available here:

    http://librarysearch.melbourne.vic.gov.au/opac/JoinWiz.aspx

    Lynda can be found here:

    • Thank you OP!

    • i find that the for the courses Lynda has, the content is better, but udemy has a much wider range of content / courses.

    • Do I do an online only account? Will I still get a card number to log-in to Lynda?

    • Free for a month or forever? Thanks for sharing.

    • Pretty sure this was posted not too long ago

Sorry, great deal but a dupe https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/199176

I've never found a single Udemy course to be even close to the quality of Lynda's. All of Lynda's videos are created by world renowned experts in their field and not your average joe bloggs like on Udemy. Ever since Linkedin bought Lynda, it's only gotten better too.

Just an fyi. It is possible to save your steamed video data with something like youtube-dl.

      • most of it people have already saved and put online to share for free.

  • Anyone know how to login via the iphone/ipad app? Not sure how to use the login or password @_@

Sorry, please disregard the previous question, just find the sentence saying no support to app :(

  • Just got something from South Perth City council in WA saying they're now doing this too.

  • i saw something about you can view courses offline using the desktop app, does this work with the melb. lib. membership?

  • Just registered and got the Library Card Number but not PIN.

Maybe the process has changed recently?

The My Account section says "Enter code received in address confirmation letter." so maybe now you do need to wait for the address verification letter.
