  • hi spackbace - could you please point out how this is a bargain..
ie - why this is a better deal than what I could normally expect to negotiate at my local dealer?

(otherwise I fear this post will be burnt)

      • Most of these sound like they can be negotiated to be included in the purchase price anyway

and who pays sticker price lol

        • Most of these sound like they can be negotiated to be included in the purchase price anyway

2yr extended warranty costs the dealership about $900
4 free services - would never be negotiated into it, but have an ongoing value to the dealership
4yrs extra roadside assistance - again wouldn't be something that would be negotiated in

That's on top of the low price of $36,990/$37,990 which has never been cheaper for a brand new one. Even at EOY clearance last year.

        • From my research when I was looking for a new car, I've noticed that people found it easy to knock off 10-15k from the RRP of a Holden that has a stocker price of 45K+ on top of extras.

Secondly, dealership warranties cost nothing to the dealer and you have to get your car serviced at that particular dealer in order for it to be valid. Factory extended warranties are preferred for this reason.

When I bought my car though not a Holden, I was about to negotiate roadside assistance to be included in the purchase price easy.

Which is why I was referring to a genuine warranty costing money. If you think the extended warranty in this sale is the same as a dealership 'free' warranty (which do require you to service through them, max claim amounts are $500, can't claim more than about $2,000 over the warranty period) then you really need to do some research!

Holden are including a genuine, factory, bumper to bumper warranty extension. Doesn't matter who you purchase or service through.

All depends on the car. Couldn't do that on a VF for example unless you were part of a major fleet company.

        • @Spackbace:

I do understand the difference between Dealership extended warranties and Factory extended warranties, must of misread your post.

If the Factory warranties cost the dealership money, would not then the dealer pass on this extra cost to the consumer in the form of an increased price?

Holdens rrp is just like Harris Scarfes.

  • Sounds better than Hilux?

    • +1

Hilux has a much stronger cult following. They are the vehicle of choice in all mines and the mining town communities. Generally lots of aftermarket mods are made for the hilux series first.

I've driven a '11 holden Colorado and quite liked it, not enough to make a decent comparison or review though. It also had a better driving position than many of the upright 4wds (landcruiser), however had less ground clearance. My opinion is that people are downgrading to more fuel efficient vehicles, so these larger vehicles are being reduced.

It's also worth looking at the mitsubishi triton, which I (understand to have) picked up it's game in the past few years

      • A lot of mimes have the ford (check Theiss ) and even the Chinese brand vehicles now (check Palmer's mines). Hilux isn't as huge any more (still a great vehicle though)

      • Hilux has a much stronger cult following. They are the vehicle of choice in all mines and the mining town communities. Generally lots of aftermarket mods are made for the hilux series first.

Agreed. Hilux is still banking on the reputation it got from the 'unbreakable' models of the early 00s.

My opinion is that people are downgrading to more fuel efficient vehicles, so these larger vehicles are being reduced.

Actually you'd be surprised. The 4x4 ute market is huge and keeps increasing, with sales of SUVs levelling out. People are realising how versatile a dual cab is for a family, as well as general duties, holidays, towing etc.

  • three of these please! dang

Sure, just send me your cc details and we'll go right ahead ;)

  • i could get a better price through work, piss your retail discount off and give us gold with a manufacturer incentive ;)

    Prefer the Ford Ranger
Plus the chick is hot in the ad

    • +1

She is very hot, but the ad makes me cringe.

    • +1

New shape ranger is incoming though. Not the time to buy one.

        • +1

It is, but I'm saving that extra $20k and am getting one of these (was in yesterday dealing for one)

        • @Where's_That_Cake:

Add the reverse camera :) Only about $400, but genuine and very handy!

        • @Spackbace: Might do that.

        • @Spackbace: Picking up a metallic red one, with towbar, front/rear mats, tub liner and reverse cam tomorrow!

        • @Where's_That_Cake:

          Enjoy :)

Shoulda got a spray-on tub liner though, just fyi ;) Costs a bit more (around $900-$1000) but lasts a lot longer, looks better! But oh well :)

        • +1

@Spackbace: The inner tub liner (not over-side) and towbar were already fitted, they were going to use this one as a demonstrator but I had a bit of a better bargain and I've had Rhino lining in my last ute and on very hot days it would get damaged easily. It'll do for putting my son's quad on anyway.

    • I see so many of these broken down though.

      • You mean stopped waiting for the guy in the Colorado to catch up right?

        • :)

nah, being towed by RACQ breakdown service, saw another last week getting towed out of a car park .

        • Usually people who drive these are a bit past hooning anyway.

  • +7

    Thanks OP, bought 3

  • +8

Sigh, more junk that's gonna be sitting in my garage for years before I chuck it out.

  • I got this as a pop up. May be worth browsing the page the OP linked to if you are interested, could be another $500 off.

A good deal. $37990 driveway for auto with free serving for three years. A mate has had two lease ones and no problems at all. 6spd auto and huge torque figures. Big truck though.

  • Must have just dropped in price as yesterday the local dealer had signs saying $38990.
Wouldn't the runout model Mitsubishi be better, $29990, great price for 4wd twin cab style side Ute.

    • +1

With the Mitsubishi, Your stuck with manual also that model is showing it age now. These are a different generation and size of truck. Though if all you have is $30k and want a no frills manual the trition is great. The motor in the triton is real soft in low revs so needs to be peddled along. If you have a look at both you'll see what I mean.

      • thanks.

  • Does Holden have cashrewards?

  • What's the huge factory bonus that the promotion has in it's spiel?

    • Yeah, ignore that lol

      Review Summary:

New Toyota Hilux Ute Review 2016

" The new Toyota Hilux ute won’t be on sale until October, and already, it seems, new Hilux struggles to keep up with today’s Holden Colorado, Mazda BT-50 and Ford Ranger. "

Hilux is selling off past glory….Ranger is the best ute now if you read all the independent reviews. A lot of the mines are switching to Ranger too.

sigh - more 'I wanna be an American' type vehicles. Huge, primitive, fuel guzzling road blockers.

    • +4

you mean "I wanna carry the tools that feed my children" type vehicles

    • Fuel guzzling? On a combined run these will get under 9L/100km, not to mention what they get on the highway. Many many SUVs and even medium size cars struggle to reach that economy.

We're not talking big Silverado's or F trucks here

      • -1

Yes - at least it's diesel (7.9 combined according to the site), but a few provisos:

How many use the dual cab?
How small then is the tray with the dual cab (could a more efficient vehicle give that space?
Do you need 4x4 (it is available as 4x2 though)?
What's the real world fuel consumption like in urban driving?
Do you know how dirty diesels are for those kiddies you're feeding (not to mention everyone else)?

Ok, it has a towing capacity that some people may need (over a smaller, more economical vehicle). I'd bet that most people never tow anything with them over the capabilities of a smaller vehicle.

I would suggest that the vast majority of people buying this type of vehicle (lets face it - men. More particularly - tradesmen), would be fine with a 2 litre 4-6 litre per 100 km vehicle. It's only work site macho and Americanisation that has them buying this stuff.

What's the real world fuel consumption like in urban driving? That's why I said under 9.5L/100km - I was being realistic on that!
Do you know how dirty diesels are for those kiddies you're feeding (not to mention everyone else)? What's 'clean' these days? Hybrids? Look at the pollution of making and disposing of the batteries

Ok, it has a towing capacity that some people may need (over a smaller, more economical vehicle). I'd bet that most people never tow anything with them over the capabilities of a smaller vehicle. You really don't know the market well

        • -1

          @Spackbace:
Yes, (I'm agreeing with you), if I was going to buy something like that I'd get 4x4.
If official combined is 7.9, you can bet real urban would be more than 9.5. More like 10-12. Possibly more.
You can get cleaner (I didn't say clean) - cleaner 'blue' diesel (don't know of any in this vehicle type though, maybe Merc), petrol.
I know what I see on the roads. Most are rarely used for towing anything bigger than a large trailer, which a 'better' vehicle can do fine.

        • +2

Mate your in La la land. 2lt petrol single cab utes are thirsty as. Around 12lt per 100km. The market for this car is mostly folks who have a farm and want the tray and cab for multiuse. Or families that want a 4x4 for camping and outdoors, picking up building materials etc moving boxes. Towing a boat or caravan. Basically every activity that you feel you would like to be judgemental about. Sure I would agree folks make a lot of unloaded trips in these things but they do use them for work and rec. Now back to your drum circle.

        • -2

Towing a (huge) boat or caravan are the only things there that could be argued require a vehicle of this size. Everything else can be done with a more modest and efficient vehicle.

        • @wfdTamar:
How about if someone like myself is a tradie but also has a wife, 3 kids and a dog and wants to be able to accommodate them when my wife needs our car? 4WD is great for when I take my kids off on their quads, I can get out there in any weather without worrying that my 2WD ute will get stuck.

        • @wfdTamar: I get what your saying mate. You see a fair of these out there with hard covers doing day to day activities. But whats your solution? someone who has a boat, tows a van, goes camping or does renovations and farm work on weekends is not to be allowed to drive their ute to work on weekdays? So they need to keep horses or buy an electric car for weekdays. If they get horses they need to get hay bails and for that they need a ute. And to buy an extra car that's smaller and pay finance and Rego and insurance is just stupid. I have a 4x4. And we have a small diesel hatch car which we try to use for much of the ferrying duty but sometimes I need to take the 4x4 for odd trips as required. I sleep well at night.

        • -1

I can do all that with a diesel 4x4 station wagon with trailer. 5.5 unladen - 7.5 at the most laden with trailer. Or slightly (1-2 higher) more with a cleaner petrol version (if I lived in an urban area).

Doesn’t hog the road, others can see around and through the car. Only thing they can't do is tow huge boats, trailers or caravans (1.6 tonne up) or serious off road.

        • -3

@sillyhead: Not judging the activities, but the vehicle choice for it. 2 litre turbo diesel or turbo petrol in a smaller vehicle can do all but the heavier stuff and serious 4wd. They would suit the vast majority of buyers of these yank style tanks and be more comfortable.

        • How many use the dual cab?

The dual cab is better because you can move the seat further back. You can also fit more items inside the cab. (You cant leave groceries in the tray when you go shopping)

How small then is the tray with the dual cab (could a more efficient vehicle give that space?

I think it's a bit smaller, but imo it's better. If you're buying a tray for full use, then get a single cab. But most wouldn't require that much space. On site we rarely used the full length of the single cab

According to the specs, the rear space on the dual cab is 1.48m, and the space cab provides around a 1.79m tray. I reckon a single cab would provide around a foot more (the specs don't tell you).

        • @Davo1111: Yeah it's been a long time since I used my scab properly. Been eyeing up a dual can for a few years now, can't wait to take delivery of it.

  • +1

Just goes to show just how over inflated these vehicles prices are if they can slash over $10k out of the price plus chuck in all these extras…

  • +1

If you go to the website in the link and refresh a few times you will probably get a pop up offering you a $500 off voucher which would bring the base manual down to $36,490.

  • If I could sell my car for a decent price, I'd be in the market.

I'm too lazy to sell though, I was thinking about buying a second hand dual cab instead.

Cheers for the info though, Spackbace, gives me another option.

  • +2

This looks like a good deal on paper. I'm considering it as I'm in the market for a 4x4 dual-cab.
As a rough guide for others you can also get (base model 4x4 dual-cab auto) the following
All prices are rough as some are estimates based on a manual price plus a guess at whatever the dealer wants to add on for an auto
    Triton (runout) $31k, Amarok $39k, Dmax $39k, Hilux $41k, bt50 $43k, ranger $44k, navara (runout) $37k
New triton is probably around $40k after minor haggling, new Navara maybe $45k after haggling
I think the pick of those under $40k are the Colorado and the Amarok. Anyone manage to get a Ranger/BT50 for <$40k???

    • Isn't the base BT-50 4x4 $39,990 drive away?

      • Oops, missed that … that's the manual price though. Assume auto is around $2k extra so lets say $42k. Now … if I can haggle the auto into the $39990…
