You need really deep pocket to fit this baby.

    • +3

lol, will look great in your pocket

      • +10

I can finally look symmetrical by placing this umbrella in my right pants pocket.

        • +38

Not putting that extra pair of socks in your left pocket would achieve the same result.

    • Longer than the 1 I've got.
Just got the ruler out - an embarrassed how short mine is ;-)

Bought 1 180g travel umbrella over a week back from DS for just less than this 3 pack delivered. But it's only about half the length at 16cm.

      • +2

So Dick Smith has the short ones?

        • +4

And these ones feature Rubber coated for more secure and comfortable grip :-)

"Is that an umbrella in your pocket or are you just really happy to see me?"

  • +1

Wonder how the quality compares to the woodworm umbrellas?

    • Well if you factor in what it would cost to deliver, the umbrellas are costing you no more than $1.50… if they were any good, I'm sure they would sell them for more.

      • +1

not necessarily, woodworm ones go for $15 and are great quality
However I've never seen a sturdy "pocket" uumbrella

        • +2

The difference is we have good feedback about Wormwood umbrellas. These are a very unknown product.

They may be cheap just because they are quite big for a folding umbrella.

I travel cheaply - just with carry on, so rarely bring an umbrella. I've got caught in rain in various foreign cities, so bought from street vendors who assure me how durable & well constructed their umbrella is (same as stressed in this deal).

But they fail sometimes within minutes. The vendor suddenly refuses to remember they just sold me it, demands I show a receipt they never provided, or just ignores me…

This time I'll just say no & now have my tiny travel umbrella from Dick (I'm sure the cover can be used as a condom - I love protection in the wet).

        • +2

          @brucefromaustralia: Eh?

"…if they were any good, I'm sure they would sell them for more."

I disagree: for example Woodworm umbrellas seem much more durable than Myer's $50 umbrellas that are usually in the mens clothing section. (Although Myer have always replaced the umbrella for me no questions asked when the frame has broken from strong wind).

Prices are often no guide to quality. On top of this quality is often not tangible (for example I may well have a far worse opinion of the Myer umbrellas if I bought it in a service station for $10. Despite it being exactly the same item).

Similarly you may have a higher opinion of these umbrellas were they sold inside Myers.

          @Diji1:
They / Visa are paying for delivery, normally charged at $7.95 - $9.95. It may not cost them that much, but it leaves little margin on these cheap umbrellas.

But at effectively around 65c each when factoring in normal delivery costs, I would doubt the quality at that effective price.

Businesses sell at a price the market will bear. This tends to indicate the market didn't bear the original price. There is usually a reason they are clearing this stock so cheaply.

Just because a product is expensive in a store does not mean it is of greater quality than a similar product elsewhere. I was commenting on a very different factor.

Your point that Myers sell similar umbrellas dearer than other sellers (I'll take your word on that), shows the practice that businesses sell at whatever price the market will bear. People factor in the believed prestige of the brand.

The same effect here reduces the price on these unknown, untested budget products from a discount seller.

We can't put our hands on the product (Mr Selfridge taught the retail trade the value of that), we probably all have had bad folding umbrella experiences - so are wary, the brand is unknown, & there are no independent reviews - all factors mitigating against a higher price.

That is, it's a risky unknown purchase, so the market pushes the price down.

Discount b&m shops probably only shift their sub-quality folding umbrellas when there is unexpectedly high demand - rainy days. You can charge what you like then. There is no such demand here to keep prices up, just selling on price.

Folding umbrellas are an unlikely fit for online trading, so they are being cleared.

I bought a $29 umbrella from DS. When people want a travel umbrella, they don't immediately think of Dick. As it is not a core line in their business, takes up valuable retail shelf space (real estate) that could give a far greater return, & the current owners bought the stock at such an unbelievable write down, they still will probably make a profit selling it to me at $4.77. So reasonable quality can be bought at a knocked down price :-)

DS will make the real profit from removing it from their system, & filling the shelves with highly profitable fast moving stock.

That back story is absent from this company's deal. For those buying, I hope its good value for the price.

But that's a lot longer than saying "…if they were any good, I'm sure they would sell them for more".

        • +1

@brucefromaustralia: Any umbrella you buy cannot outlast a Melbourne gust. It's a conspiracy; they all invert and leave you looking like a nong. But yes, you cannot get enough protection!

      • Yeah…grabbed 2x (six) so cheap it doesn't matter…will be good for winter coming up.

    • +3

The woodworm ones are too big - even with the ventilation flap, they are prone to inversion. Quality components with a poor design still results in a poor product.

Source: owning them. First inversion within minutes. Three times before I got to work (10 minutes). Wasn't even windy in the scheme of things.

      • +6

Happens to my wife all the time…never happens to me….think some people dont understand how to use umbrellas properly…i.e. to adjust the angle for the wind.

        • Perhaps it's your wife stuck out alone in the bad weather and multi-angled wind gusts, also carrying the latest Ozbargain purchases and a 5kg bag of potatoes, whilst attempting to avoid oncoming pedestrians. Working in any city will soon put paid to any ideas of using an umbrella 'properly.' Besides of which, she probably has been using it to fend off the unfriendlies; the umbrella is a girl's handiest weapon. Perhaps you could show her your comments and ask for a quick demonstration; "Take that you varmint!"

  • +3

Umbrellas are one thing you don't want to be cheap with.
Cheap ones buckle inside out with heavy wind as I'm sure most people have seen and laughed at. The embarrassment! :0

    • +4

The Great Umbrella Slaughter of April 2015

RIP Brave Umbrellas, cheap or not.

    • +1

Laugh? I'm always like been there bro or I feel your pain. Small ones always break easily no matter the quality, just bring a big one so reliable.

    • I agree with you in principle and goddamit I'm too good looking to get rained on but the Woodworm umbrellas from OO are fantastic in my experience: I have never had one turn inside out which I can't say for far more expensive umbrellas. They're certainly cheap relative to some other umbrellas that you'd hope are higher quality…

  • Super lightweight and compact while also being sturdy and durable, this folding umbrella is the perfect size for storing in your handbag, school bag, glove box, desk drawer and more.

But not pockets? Guess they're using it in a figurative sense, like 'pocket yacht'.

I recommend the Fulton Tiny 1 for a genuinely (jacket) pocketable umbrella. The Go brand Dick Smith sell appear to be much the same as the Fulton. They're nearly half the closed length of these Phoenix ones, though there is some sacrifice in canopy size (87cm vs 97cm).

    • perfect size for storing in your handbag

You'd need a big handbag at 28cm long folded.

Yes the ($29rrp Go brand, paid $4.77 pickup) little Dickie I mentioned above is 89cm in circumference, but that is only 77cm between opposite sides! Definitely will get wet in a downpour.

    • Huh, not seen those, might give 'em a try as that's pretty large … how reliable are they in your experience in terms of surviving wind gusts?

      http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601…

Actually looking at it though the handle is too short for me but damn that's pretty good for being pocketable (is that a word?).

      • Been caught out with it in moderately windy conditions on a couple of occasions and it survived, but it's something I'd try to avoid subjecting it to.

It's mainly for those 'chance of a shower' days when I'm heading out via public transport and don't want to be overburdened with a large/heavy umbrella on a day that ends up being sunny.

        • Oh yah good points.

    • Need deeper pockets.

  • +1

Forgive my Sunday dumbness… How do you negate the $9.95 postage fee? thx.

    • +1

You have to use Visa checkout, I've never used it but can't be complicated I guess.

      • +1

What - you're passing on buying your own deal ;-)
For some one called CandyMan, I'm sure you know size matters.

        • +1

Id love to purchase, but got some woodworms hidden at home. The kids are always destroying umbrellas so these wont last till it rains if they get there hands on them.

I'm passing, but will cry when it rains :(

        • +2

@CandyMan: I'm the same. Except instead of kids I donate umbrellas to random bus passengers. Unintentionally :| … :D

        • +1

@Diji1: If you leave one behind on public transport, with a silly little ducks head on the handle, you would soon have the other passengers chasing you to return it! Fact; I had mine for years without it going walkies. True dinks!

        • @JediJan:
Don't leave it near me, I'd souvenir it;-)

Mr Curly of Leunig fame is my hero.

Some people are caring souls, who would think an unusual object like that must be precious to you.

Honestly, I would pick it up to return to you. I've spent a little too long in Japan, where that is normal behaviour.

      • +1

Well no wonder I missed it… You hid the important details in that title with the really large font. :) Thanks.
Looks like PayPal has some new competition?

    • By reading the deal title.
(I missed that important detail earlier.)

Don't forget the 35c cash back offer as well ;-)
You'd kick yourself for missing that.

      • -1

Yeah, This is OZB, remember :)

      • +1

Fixed: It's bold now (the font):)

        • +1

          This is OZB, remember :)
Some people will still miss it & regret it later ;-)

        • +1

Luckily I developed the OzBargain No Regrets Time Machine to deal with that very situation.
(Please Note: backward time travel feature disabled in trial version)

  • Oops. Wrong umbrella.

    • Ugh, I bought it based on your review. :p

    • jakiman, these aren't the umbrellas you're looking for…

    • Thanks Brucefromaustralia
Todays price won't last. So why don't you bite the bullet ;)

      • +1

        :-)
When checking the umbrella size, I pulled out the other ones. I didn't realise I had so many. A quality fibre rib one needs a minor repair, the others I lubricated with a good silicon spray.

So won't need any for a couple of years. Never paid $10 for umbrellas belore - I'm not made of money ;-)

  • Click & Collect is available for this product, but can't find the option available at checkout. :-(

    • Free delivery is available.

      • Only with Visa card. I have no Visa card. :-(

        • You use Visa Checkout, like PayPal.

From memory, the Visa Checkout works with other cards. Try registering.

        • @brucefromaustralia:
Are you with me or against me?
before you were warning us not to buy, now you encourage it!

        • +3

          @CandyMan:
It's a good price, but I'm a canny buyer. Others will buy, but I doubt the quality.

Strange that the 2 of us with the most comments are not buying ;-)

It's an umbrella thing for me. I still miss my very expensive ($110) carbon fibre folding umbrella I found in Düsseldorf. We were inseparable in my travels.

I left it behind in a vehicle many years later after hitching in the snow to a resort (the nearest bus stop) in the mountains of Southern Japan. I explained to the bus driver I needed to go back for my umbrella, but he just gave me a ¥100 shop cheapie, left behind by a passenger :-(

At each train station, I upgraded to another free umbrella, until I had a beautiful wooden handled golf umbrella. It never rained again on my long holiday :-)

I will never look at another umbrella the same as I looked at that one.

        • +4

@brucefromaustralia: this topic has taught me so much about your life

        • +1

          @Jesmond:
I'm not sure if you meant that in a positive or negative sense ;-)

I take it you weren't referring to my treatise on the effect of market economics of online umbrella pricing ;-)

But if you've spent years in such close contact (travelling cheaply on many adventures with few possessions) with something as good as a quality umbrella, it is like a sensual lover you'll never forget, and long for long after it was over… I think I am giving too much away :-)

It was in my top 3 items to travel with list - in my writing on the subject.

But no discount umbrella will ever compare. It was a souvenir found on the banks of the Rhine after a concert, and a pointer to past travels. It was more than a mere folding umbrella.

There have been many other folding umbrellas since, but I'll alway remember it ;-)

        • +1

          @brucefromaustralia:

From memory, the Visa Checkout works with other cards.

It does. I used my Mastercard.

        • @roughana:
Good to know. I signed up when it launched. Too long ago to remember details like that.

  • +5

I'm glad that these are both a 'folding up and down design'. All of my other umbrellas can only fold either up or down, but not both!

    • +2

When I first saw that, I thought that was a strange feature.

Then I realised all folding umbrellas fold in the middle of the fabric, so do fold up & down to make them compact. Standard umbrellas do not do that.

It's like no one has seen a folding umbrella before. I really trust this deal now.

I'm waiting for their description of rain. I mean, I need to know that to realise I need an umbrella.

  • Are these umbrellas good quality or just run-of-the-mill stuff that is no better than el cheapo brollies picked up locally?

    • Buy & tell us.
But the deal will end before any one knows the answer to that.
Found no reviews online, except deal site.

  • Just bought a set. Fingers crossed!

  • +2

Thanks OP I am a huge believer in cheap umbrellas because I lose them all the time, and this price costs less than Reject Shop so I really don't care about quality!

  • Has anybody got a coupon code for this site?
If anyone wants to go if for a group purchase in North Sydney we could potentially get 15 for ~$40

  • Thanks OP, ordered one

  • +1

Why is the VISA checkout popup Http only and not https ?

  • +1

    Thanks Op. Bought this.

  • Beware..doing visa checkout to get free delivery actually incur a fee of $5.42 deducted from the card .. :(

    • +1

I have no charge for that amount on my MasterCard…must be something else.

EDIT: Maybe Visa puts a pending charge on there to test the card works…but it will clear on its own?

    • +1

As noise36 has suggested, it's only an authorisation done by VISA to check the validity of the card. It will clear in a few days.

      • thanks noise36 and Jad.

  • Why don't oo send to parcel lockers :(

    • are you sure? I actually updated delivery address to parcel locker?

EDIT: "Due to the deliver services we currently use we are unable to deliver to PO boxes or Parcel lockers. Please note that if we receive an order with a PO Box or Parcel Locker then we will be unable to ship until we receive a street address."

  • Thanks OP. ordered one. Hoepfully quality is not too bad.

  • +1

Just received mine today, quality seem pretty nice.

    • I'm glad you liked them
Did they fit in your pocket?

      • Unfortunately no. I don't have deep pockets….

  • They're basically twigs with a bit of fabric attached to them. Wont be any good for anything other than a light-medium drizzle.

  • Mine were meant to be delivered today, but I haven't been told they've arrived… I wonder what happened.

    • They were waiting for me at reception.

  • Mine delivered today. Got 2 packs so 6 umbrellas all up.
The first one I opened up to try didnt work - mechanism is broken. The other 5 open fine

EDIT: Have got it to work now. The button to release is really stiff though. Might loose up after a few uses

  • Send them an email
Hopefully they will send you another pack

    • +1

Or if they are out of stock, a refund.
