David Jones American Express Credit Card with 30000 Points Worth $200 ($99 Annual Fee)

280

I was buying some shirts in my local DJs a few weeks ago and the sales guy told me about this deal.
Basically you apply in store or online, get your card, make 3 purchases of any amount and you get 30k Amex points; 40k if you get the platinum.
You can then covert the points to account credit on your card. 29k points converts to $200 which covers the $99 annual fee and leaves you with $101 free credit.
I have done this and about to cancel my account; I only asked for a $1k credit limit to keep the footprint down and make sure I was approved.
It's not an amazing deal but if you are going to spend close to $100 in DJs and can be bothered, you might consider it.

Update 9/6: I just called to cancel the card after paying off the remainder of my balance. The guy on the phone said that he is sending me a cheque for the portion of the annual fee I did not use (11 months worth). Makes this deal even better!

Update 10/8: Just got my cheque from Amex for the refund of the annual fee. After the June update I hadn't heard anything from DJ/Amex so I called up and asked. The girl I talked to was not aware that a refund was required but saw on my account that one had been actioned. Apparently there was an error or the chq got lost in the mail. She reissued and it arrived last week. Can't be sure this is a standard policy but I am just letting you know a full refund is possible!

Card fee of $99. no deal.

  • Competitive annual Card fee of $99

  • It is not bad, have had this card before, easy way to get $100 for free.

  • It's been a few years since I was told by the sales assistant when I was buying something that day but if you go in on the first day of their yearly sale and apply then usually the first year's fee is waived (and you can just cancel after) and you get the points and you get 30% off on the purchase you make that day too.

No idea if they still do that but worth a shot.

  • Have had this card a number of times in the past few years with the bonus points on sign up. First time I got it, they waived the 1st year fee but the other times there was a $99 fee. Not a bad deal but there are currently better ones about (with 1st year fee waived) with other credit cards.

    • What are better deals than $100 for free? o-o

A couple on offer at the moment are the commbank offer and the NAB offer.

        • But those offers you have a minimum spend.

This one has no minimum spend for easy money?

        • @smileymiwo: you still need to make 3 purchases with the DJs card. The minimum spends on the CBA ($500) and NAB (1 purchase) cards aren't that high. The ANZ one however is quite high ($3k).

        • +1

          @ChickenTalon:

Can you link the NAB offer?

Rodo linked the ANZ offer when he said NAB lol.

      • ANZ is 50000 points, no fee for first year. Catch is that you have to spend $3000 in first three months, but you get 1.5 Qantas Points for every $1 spent on the AmEx and complimentary travel insurance too (Platinum card). Black version has even more bonuses if you are eligible:

  • does the 29k points convert to $200 cash ?

    • +1

It converts to $200 that will pay off your credit card debt. So if you have $201 debt on your card, after you do the points conversion you just need to pay $1 and you have a $0 balance.

  • $100 is too good to miss. Thanks.

  • will this work with the amex 50 dollar cashback of harvey norman?

    • Yes, once you have the card you can apply the usual Amex deals to it. Just make sure you don't get the DJ storecard!

    Annual Card fee of $99

Supplementary Card holder annual fee of $29

    no deal…

  • $101 free credit to spend at any shops accepts Amex? Not bad but sounds like a lot of paperworks and credit check i guess?

    • +1

Paperwork was like 1 page and the credit check was a joke. When I got mine a few years back, I was unemployed but about to start a new job the following week. Also had two other existing Credit Cards with about $14k credit. This one pushed up my total credit limit to $20k. Citibank won't even give me the $15k limit I need for their Citibank Signature card.

Anyway, the DJ Amex was a good card to go with my Virgin Flyer card at the time. Free points on both when I applied. The Amex racks up points quite quickly if you use it for all petrol station and supermarket transactions where it nets 2x and 3x more points per $1 spent (and I'm a household of 1). Over that 1yr I had it, I managed to get back $200-300 as credit on the card saving me money, and the remaining points got transferred to Velocity pts.

  • It's a big hassle, and also you can only do it once. They get commission based on how many cards they sign up each month and it's even on their mystery shop list so technically they are required to tell every single customer, buying or not buying, about the credit cards.

It does come with complimentary gift wrapping and delivery though. Has its perks, but not really worth the annual fee IMHO.

From memory, the AMEX card is 3 points per dollar at David Jones, 2 points per dollar at Woolworths and Wesfarmers stores, and 1 point per dollar everywhere else.

It's actually 3 points at Woolies and Coles and 2 points at DJs

  • not bad, but there are other free cards.

  • Hi guys! I have a question? This DJ American Express card is the same with commonwealth emex card? Because i can't sign up my commonwealth amex card in https://www.americanexpress.com/australia/.

Partner and I have joint Amex thru Westpac home loan. Partner applied for this, no problem.
      - Diaried to cancel cards in a 11 months or less.
      - Received a card each
      - did 3 non-DavidJones transactions (requirement to trigger points apparently) to buy 3x1 litre milks from Woollies/Coles.
      - received statement with annual fee $99 plus 3 supermarket transactions.
      - logged into DJs Amex, converted points to $104 credit to clear annual fee plus milk.
      - Converting remaining $100 to Best Western gift card for upcoming trip.

It's basically free $100 to use anywhere that takes Amex or paypal if you hook it up that way.

      • Thanks for the helpful info Seren! What was the time frame of things roughly? Just applied online and roughly adding all the steps it seems like a lengthy process over a few months. Still not complaining for $100; just curious because I'm due to travel in a few months. Thanks

One statement cycle …. Cards turned up within a week or so, letting us spend the three non-DJ transactions. three weeks later, statement turned up. Logged on pretty much straight away, claimed/converted our points (this has 2-3 business day turn around) and that's it….. Five weeks from end to end tops (?)
          Have fun :)

  • I had this card previously. Cancelled it before the end of the 12 months.
Probably just over 12 months since I cancelled it.
Wonder if I'm now eligible as a 'new' customer again …

I used to work at DJ and they have this deal (30,000 points for DJ AMEX or 60,000 points for Platinum although on website it's only 40,000 for now) every few weeks. So for those who don't want to open now, don't worry, it will come back very soon (at least in-store).

Per some tips above: it's best to open when there's some sort of yearly/mid-yearly sale in-store because they tie-in with other offers (for eg $20-$50 gift card if you spend over $XXX with a DJ Amex card). Also, floor managers would get super desperate on salespeople because they have very high card targets for these periods which means they will do anything to get you to sign up, i.e. waive the annual fee etc.

Bottom line: this deal is okay, but if you can wait until a big sale event to try your luck in-store then you may get more bang for your buck. And if you know someone from DJ you can open a card with them as they will earn $25-$50 per card for commmission, probably should offer to buy you lunch afterwards though :)

  • I currently hold the basic DJ Amex in my second year now, and they recently send me an email (should be targeted) saying if I upgrade to DJ Amex Platinum, I will get 50,000 bonus points (or 37,500 if enrolled in Qantas). Anyone else received that?

  • Sorry, so what happen with this
Update 9/6: I just called to cancel the card after paying off the remainder of my balance. The guy on the phone said that he is sending me a cheque for the portion of the annual fee I did not use (11 months worth). Makes this deal even better!

    ??

    • I will update you when/if I get this cheque. I have received my "your account is now closed" letter, no cheque yet!

      • ah so you are only paying for a month not a year?

        • That is what I was told, I don't believe it until I get a cheque in the mail. I've had ill-informed customer service reps promise me things in the past so I am not holding my breath.

      • +1

I've been told by the customer service the annual fee is a none refundable charge. There won't be a cheque in the mail I guess :-(

        • See my post update, cheque arrived.

    • See my post update, cheque arrived.

      • I dont understand how is that possible!

  • Just a question please.
The points are directly transferable to cash on the card? What is the process to convert them?
Or you only get credit to spend within David Jones?

    Many thanks.

    • +1

It gets rid of any debt you have. You sign onto the DJ Amex site and go into the rewards area. There you can choose an option called "Points for Credit" or "Credit on your Card".

It's not credit to spend on certain things, it is the same as paying off your debt on the card with normal money.

      • Thanks. I also clarified with their support. You can simply claim 200 dollars and use it to spend anywhere.

  • Hi guys, David Jones Amex Platinum now allows referrals, 40,000 pts after 3 spends (no minimum) on your first month. Referrer gets 20,000 points. You can refer your family and friends too after. Would appreciate it heaps if someone uses my link in the wiki: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals…

    • Annual fee is 295, not worth it. By the way, how much is 30k membership points now in cashback?

      • Depends, best bang for your buck is convert to SPG points at 2:1, so 20,000 SPG points, which can be easily redeemed for 3-3.5 cents per point.

        • I don't know what those points are. Are 30K points still worth $200 cashback as when this deal was originally published?

        • @noskich: Starwood Preferred Guest points, can be redeemed for hotel stays part of the SPG program, or transferred to more than a dozen airline partners, where 20,000 SPG points = 25,000 miles. In most cases, you'd easily get more than $200 value.

Not too sure in terms of cashback as statement credit or gift cards, have never used them that way before.
