    • Amazing for selfies

Awesome, now I can capture footage of my face being smashed with an airbag in the event of a collision.

    • +3

No no the airbag will mean you dont get far enough forward for the camera, disconnect it so your face hits the windscreen and is in the 120 degree view

    • This G1W-C use capacitor instead of battery, it is much safer

Awesome, I have a dashcam already but might get this one since mine has a battery in it (dunno why they bother, it only lasts 2 min. How can that be cheaper than a capacitor?)

    • -4

I tend to think batteries as safer than capacitors. Has anyone ever seen a capacity on a mobo short circuit? It literally explodes like a firecracker. On the other hand I have never see a battery explode. If you want dash can with legit battery take a look at Möbius cam, the battery in it lasts for 2 he's, got one last month & love it.

      • +2

Search youtube for lithium battery fire. A "firecracker" is nothing compared to it.

Scientific paper demonstrating lithium thermal runaway
        http://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlehtml/2013/ra/c3ra45748…

Abuse conditions such as overcharge, over-discharge and internal short-circuits can lead to battery temperatures far beyond the manufacturer ratings. At a critical temperature, a chain of exothermic reactions can be triggered. The reactions lead to a further temperature increase, which in turn accelerates the reaction kinetics. This catastrophic self-accelerated degradation of the Li-ion battery is called thermal runaway.

During thermal runaway, temperatures as high as 900 °C can be reached, and the battery can release a significant amount of burnable and (if inhaled in high concentrations) toxic gas.

        • OK so lithium batteries CAN be dangerous … with the tens of millions being carried every day, if it was a real problem nobody would have a mobile phone.

The primary reason for using a capacitor dashcam is because the excessive heat in the car cabin in a place like Australia tends to mean the battery doesn't last too long. The capacitor does not have this problem.

      • Only polarized capacitors are dangerous, and still, nothing compared to a lithium fire.

        • +14

Flux capacitors can be dangerous as well.

      • How many batteries do you leave out directly exposed to the Australia sun?

      • i reckon it has to do with bad quality lithium batteries. use genuine nokia bl-5c's in my dashcams and i'm getting an average runtime of 2.5 hours (about 3 when new). they generally last me a couple of summers until i replace them when they don't run for long enough

    • Awesome, I have a dashcam already but might get this one since mine has a battery in it (dunno why they bother, it only lasts 2 min.

The point of the battery/capacitor is to allow the camera to shut down gracefully when the engine is switched off, preventing data corruption. Otherwise it'll be like yanking your desktop's power cable while it's actively writing data to your hard disk.

Actually I fully copied it straight from the text from this older deal:

Not sure if whinging about the fact that he has plagiarised someone's work, or about the fact that you're mad that he's getting some internet points that should be yours. If the latter, cool story bro and grow up :))))) Learn to chill out in life and not take things such as "deals" too seriously. We are all here to provide information for each other, not make things "yours" or "mine". That shit's for 2 year olds.

      Beat me by 10 seconds.

  • +4

Very good for a very good cam.

Only neg is that it's VERY choosy with Micro SD cards,

Kingston are you're best bet to work first time

    • +1

I bought a cheap PNY one off amazon and it works fine. I heard it's just choosy if you go beyond 64gb.

    • My Sandisk 16gb Class 2 works fine.

    • I had memory errors with a Kingston Class 4, but works fine with a Kingston Class 10.

  • Is it worth getting rearward facing camera as well, or just a forward facing one?

    • People buy them for different reasons, but mainly it's to prove you weren't at fault in an accident.

      • I suppose if I do get rear-ended and they drive off I'll hopefully be able to catch their plate as they go past.

    • +1

I've been considering a front & rear setup myself but none of the dual-channel kits I've seen have capacitors nor do they offer 1080p for both front and rear and the 'better' units seem to be around $300! I'm now considering just getting two of these for each car and running fused 5V power to each. They might be a little large for the rear window though, hmmm.

  • Interested in picking a couple of these up, but how are they installed?
Looks like from the same location as the rearview mirror, so how do you run power to them, (ideally neatly)?

    • You hide the cable around the top and side of your front windscreen, down the side of your dashboard and then either across to your cigaret lighter or you tap into some other power cable within the dashboard (using a 12v-5v converter & fuse). Well that's my plan anyway…

      • Cable doesn't look nearly long enough for that. You'd need 3m easily, probably more like 5 and even if you had an extension cable, voltage drop is going to be a concern!

        • +2

cable is heaps long. I've got one of these and have wired it as mentioned. But not along the drivers side .. it goes around the windscreen to the left along the passanger side, and down and across to the cig lighter. Very well hidden .

Just make sure that you aren't in the way of any air bags!

        • +2

Cable is long enough for that and you will have to roll up or cut the extra :) I bought one last time this deal was on.

        • @Tcm9669:
          Awesome, thanks guys

  • +3

Does anyone kn9w whether these ones are fake or legit? A lot of fakes doing the rounds these days

  • Great, been looking for a decent dashcam!

  • +1

Tried adding a 8% off coupon and the price jumped up to $63.. :P

  • Thanks, just ordered a few.

  • Thanks OP, have been looking for a dashcam ever since I had an idiot in front of me on a highway (110km/hr) with a mattress tied to his roof. Of course it flew off and I had to swerve to miss it!

  • -5

Looking at the box its appears fake. I got the same one from ebay for $40.99 AUD delivered

    • Link or it didn't happen.

  • +3

I had one and whilst it worked it took good images in 1080p.
However gearbest are a pain to deal with if things go wrong. This camera is only average build quality and there are many complaints of it not working when you thought it was, which for a dashcam means it can be useless.

If anything goes wrong, be prepared to spend $20 to ship it back, then have gearbest mess you around for months even if they acknowledge receipt of the return (which in China is hit and miss).

But for the price I do not think there is anything else with the video quality. Just do not expect support outside of these forums: https://forum.dashcamtalk.com/forums/g1wx.39/

    • +1

Not working when you thought it was, that's a big problem for a dashcam. I'll have to pass.

  • +2

Thanks for the Australia shipping tip (by the way, you select the option after the PayPal screen + a place order button. Was a bit confused when it was going to show up.

Been waiting for a cheap price for this! Gear Best have stung me once before with shipping, hopefully they'll be much better this time…

  • +3

FWIW I've had one of these for around 6mths. Got mine through some other etailer, around $AUD75 delivered.

Works very well - DEFINITELY worth having as there's been multiple near accidents where other drivers broke rules/common sense and it'd have come down to a PITA his word vs hers + crash site reconstruction. Whereas I later watched back on this and it was there for all to see (e.g others merging without indicating, pulling out infront of me, others not staying within their lane markings).

Very easy to mount and hide cords in my car (Toyota Corolla). Found it works best with a Class 4 mSD card.

This is an absolute bargain as the capacitor model is suited to hot temps and so a very good buy for Australians (the camera gets scary hot on summer days so I'd hate to think what it'd do to a lithium battery + possible explosion risks!).

    • +1

YEP - despite description of item stating card type to use, per the many reviews out there on the net - USE A CLASS 4 memory card, higher speed cards give mine grief too.

  • I have this and want to buy another one for another car.

Last time I bought it from somewhere else on eBay eStore009 and it works great but I heard there are a lot of fake with difference chipset in it, so is this one real?

BTW, is there come with mirror mount like eStore009?

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Capacitor-G1W-C-Car-Dash-Camera-D…

    • +1

Comes with the suction mount, but Gear Best do sell the mirror mount separately.

    • +1

Don't think it comes with the mirror mount.

I had the G1W (which just died a month ago, so I ordered this G1W-C) and it didn't come with the mirror mount. I bought the mount separately afterwards (through another seller) and it works great. No more issues with the suction cup, and it's concealed perfectly behind the mirror.

  • Does model record even when the cars turned off ?

Trying to find a model which will record when the cars turned off in case someone hits the car at the shops.

    • No battery, so no.

      • Thank you I just saw that !

Could always run off a battery pack.

    • +1

in case someone hits the car at the shops.

Or in case someone breaks into the car to get the dashcam?

  • +2

Word of warning. Last time I tried to purchase from GearBest. My dash cam never came after waiting for a monthish for it. It took them awhile to get me a refund as well.

  • -2

Anyone confirm if this is real or fact ?

  • What's the better buy - the Gearbest one, or the one on Ebay from estore009 that includes the mirror mount?

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Capacitor-G1W-C-Car-Dash-Camera-D…

About $10 more than the gearbest one, but the mirror mount looks a LOT better.

    • +4

You can buy the mirror mount for US$2.37 from GearBest too: http://www.gearbest.com/car-gadgets/pp_68511.html

      • +1

        +1 for mirror mount.

    • Bought the mirror mount for my G1W but reverted back to suction mount as it is a lot more discreet (hidden behind mirror rather than under it).

      • +1

I can't do that in my car, there's that black perforated sticker thing (to block sunlight) around the back of my mirror, and I can't get any suction cap devices to stick on it :(

I had a dashcam with the suction cap and had to mount it a bit further to the left to get it to stick to the windscreen.

        • +1

Suction cup actually sticks to that black dotted sticker with no problem in my car. Try it. you'll see what I mean.

        • +1

          @Livert: Doesn't stick for me :(
          Corolla 2009 Ascent.

        • +1

          @chuns: Condolences. Subaru 2013 BRZ.

        • @Livert: Condolences accepted haha.

        • +1

Definitely doesn't stick to the black dots for me (2013 FG2 Falcon)

    • Bought from estore009 a year ago. Can't even use the mirror mount in my Civic because it won't fit. Ended up using the suction mount instead.

  • +1

I think I bought one of this in the past and found that it does not stick very well on the windscreen, it fall off after a while (within 30 minutes). Does anyone have similar issue?

    • +1

Use your tongue and spit to lubricate suction cap. This childhood trick always worked for me!

      • +1

Try that, don't works. I even use strong sticky tape to tape it to the windscreen and it still fall off after a while.

    • It depends where you stick it, if you stick it on the black dot matrix which is around most mirrors it doesn't seem to stick well. On clean/clear glass it should stick fine. You can also get a mirror mount that goes around the arm of your mirror rather than sticking to the windscreen.

    • YES - I have the same dash cam - Same issue, excellent cam (for the price), BUY THE OPTIONAL MIRROR POLE MOUNT (so you can mount it to your rear view mirror) its only a couple of dollars more, I also found the suction cap on this unit falls off randomly, 100x better with the pole mount (and looks more discreet both inside and from outside the car).

  • Comes to $53.78 if you pay in AUD using website currency.

Good dashcam, I'll be grabbing another 2.

  • Looks like they just jacked the price up a little??? Dodgy

    • Not only that, when you apply a $5 coupon the price of the dashcam goes up about $20…

    • Price is unchanged in USD.. are you viewing in AUD?

      • You might need to refresh as it appears to have gone up

  • Are there any cameras available in market that capture front and rear view together. Googled it but couldn't find any

  • Price has gone back up… $44.99USD

    • +1

And now its down to USD $42.99. Looks like some one at GearBest having fun.

    • blue one is not changed.

      • Blue is out of stock for a while.

  • +1

I think they have been selling so well these guys thought they would now jack the price up a little and they will readjust accordingly. Dodgy is you ask me

    • Good business if you ask me!
If they were changing the charged priced but leaving the advertised price, then that's a different story, but increasing price cause demand is high is business 101!

      • +3

Good business yes but unethical to have a sale with a specified price and adjust it during the sale. It's a good indication this company can't be trusted and I won't be doing business with them

  • +2

Use code GBG1W and squeeeeez it down further by AUD $1.32 and remain true to OB spirit.

    • I tried GBG1W yesterday and it brought the price up to USD 41.99. With the current price USD 42.99 you'll save $1.

  • +1

Got this last time it was on sale. If the temperature was even close to being warm, this thing would sh*t its pants and freeze.

I contacted gearbest, they offered that I could send it back (my charge) and expect a month or so turnaround or buy a new one at 20% off or so (come on!)

The quality was great when it was working, but I'd never buy electronics over $10 from them again as warranty is a nightmare.

    • Is this a known issue with this product? I live in the tropics so I definitely need something that can handle the heat!

      • I went on google and other people have had similar problems but I don't know how common it is. I'd love to be suggested a different one if anyone has a more quality product? $<150

      • Had mine about a year (from estore009) and no problems. Was going to get another from the Gearbest Flash sale tonight but was annoyed to see something in a sale (with an advertised promotion end-date) had several price changes during the sale.

That's just crap. I'm going back to estore009 on eBay.
