I ordered mine on the 9th with the now expired hpstuedge15 coupon, but it's not shipping until the 28th unfortunately.

    • Updated the title to reflect the discount coupon. Thanks :)

    • +6

      I didn't vote for it :Þ

        Signs of a good post.

        1. Upvotes
        2. JV commenting
        3. JV getting negged.

Well done on your first post!

  • -5

You have to do your research before you post …turns out it is a good price.good work.

  • -2

How does the Tegra 4 compare in terms of horsepower to a modern 2015 chip?

    • +1

It's fine, this one is clocked pretty high so where modern cheap devices have quad core 1, 1.2 and 1.3ghz processors this is sitting at 1.8, and the nvidia graphics should be decent. If anything the 2gb ram may be a limitation at some point one would think (although my opinion on this is anecdotal as I don't have time to read benchmarks)

  • +3

    hpstuedge15 still works, not expired.

  • +2

Well done Clear the 15% discount worked!

  • Almost bought it when it was mentioned in the other HP laptop post on the weekend. I have hesitated due to the reflective screen. Does anyone have any experience using these or similar HP displays outdoors?

    • According to reviews the glossy screen is fine inside, but not outside in the sunlight. I've used cheap HP laptops that have been the same.

      • +1

Yep that's what I am thinking. Some I have seen you can crank the brightness and sort of get the right angle where they are usable. The neighbour has an Asus that is impossible to see no matter what you do, under their plastic covered pergola. The you tube video on this model doesn't have any examples of the reflections. But for the price seems a pretty good machine for couch surfing, or all that a basic user would need for emailing, document work etc.

Jelly Bean? It's like buying a Windows XP PC

    • Ships with 4.3, but has 4.4 OTA.

      • I'd like a source on this. I tried researching on google but have turned up with no confirmation that it has 4.4 update.

        • They used to have it for manual download, but its since been taken down.

Forum post here and here mentioning issues with 4.4.

Review here mentions it, Ctrl F and search for kitkat and a review here says that there was an update to kitkat available right away.

    • +4

      WinXP.
At least it's not like Vista

      • +2

Vista worked fine on new hardware. People that don't know what they are talking about however blame Vista for their problems.

        • My 2nd laptop had Vista on it. Straight out from box, crashed like 3 times a day and lagged crazy. I gave up and downgraded it to XP and it didn't have any problems like that. Granted, I gave up before the service pack 1 distribution which apparently made a huge difference, but I think that doesn't take away from the fact that Vista had its problem on its release at least. I think Vista was very resource heavy for its time.

        • @AznMitch:
Actually the Vista box weighed less than the XP box because the manual was smaller and they used less packaging.

        • +2

          @AznMitch:

yes. if you had GOOD hardware, it ran fine. if you had average or poor hardware, how do you think it ran? people buying 'Vista Certified' or 'Vista Ready' pc's a year or so before the OS came out had major problems of course.

        • @ShinjukuJR: That was its biggest problem, it was too much of a resource hog for its time. Of course, it ran fine with decent hardware so I've heard, but Vista not a game or a software where you are expecting a performance hit with bad hardware. It's an OS, it should not be too heavy for people who've bought a PC few months ago. If it is like a game or a resource demanding software like photoshop, you go in expecting that it'd be a resource hog and you could choose not to use it. Vista was on many PCs and laptops that would've performed fine on XP. My PC was HP business laptop from that year, so I think it was not outdated at the time.

        • @ShinjukuJR:
That's like blaming existing hardware when you have crappy inefficient code.

        • [@blahman]Exactly what Vista was(/comment/2770010/redir):

    • You want Jelly bean in order to be able to move things off to the SD card and utulise and external HD in the way you would expect if you are coming from Windows - once you get to Kit-Kat and Lollipop you're heading into the permissions nightmares that would probably be one of a "true" geek's reasons for buying this to play with.

It's more like buying a PC you can get XP on, with security updates still rolling in.

  • Thanks OP. Picked one up with that 15% coupon for $170. Pretty damn good deal for what you're getting. Sounds like performance is pretty snappy, only real downside is a so-so screen and middling battery power, but that doesn't affect me so much.

  • +1

Was also going to purchase but all the reviews state that Android doesn't work well with the 14" screen as the Apps are designed for phones and 10" tablets so look too big on the screen and Android has no settings to change this.

Now looking to spend a bit extra and get a Chromebook

  • +3

    Dont forget Cash Rewards !!!

    • Thanks, I almost forgot.

  • +2

Seriously looking for a reason to buy this and I'm coming up a blank.

Cant see any reason why i'd need to run Android on a 14" format.

    • +6

      Casual internet browsing,
      RDP to desktop,
      Citrix access,
      Movies,
Netflix (without having to hold a tablet up all the time),
      Google Drive with Office documents,
      Play books,

  • +4

Very tempted. Only if it runs Linux :(

    • +1

      https://developer.nvidia.com/linux-tegra

      i'm still on the fence…

    • Android runs on linux. You are already there.

      • Nearly there - if I could drop Audacity, K3b and DeVeD on this, I'd be in like a shot, but as far as multi-media goes, it's a consumer rather than a producer device, albeit a nice one:-(

      • +1

Hehe. What I mean by "Linux" is not just Linux kernel + proprietary userland, like what you get on Android, but a proper Linux distro with X11. I'll be happy even if I can get ChromeOS + crouton to run on this thing.

        • As far as I know you need a special $50 cable to root the device; however, if you are happy with the GNU Root app (which ironically doesn't need root) and X11 over VNC or one of the Xservers for Android, you should be fine. I ordered one for me and my friend to have a play with. It is hard to find FullHD clients in this price range :).

  • Tempted. What's the battery life like on this? I checked the product page and came up empty. Form factor looks similar to a Macbook Air except slightly bulkier and heavier.

Seems like it'd be good for docs and movies

    Edit: Here's a review. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2468659,00.asp

    9 Hours battery life.

  • +3

So tempting but computer says no.

  • Couldn't resist OzBargain way - buy 1st ask questions later. Now waiting for the "1-3 weeks delivery" and time to research what mods/hacks might be applied to improve usability.

  • +1

    Thanks ordered one.
It will be good for parents for basic stuff like Skype, docs, sheets and other apps. Its main drawback of oversized apps will be an advantage for them.

Got one. Tired of peering at 10" screen but am hooked on tab/android combo. I can probably sell my Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi 3G and come out ahead. . :-) .. !

    • This cannot be used a tablet mate , only as a laptop ( not even the yoga mode ) . I hope this is what you meant when you said " but am hooked on tab/android combo "

      • -1

Are you sure of that? The model in the add is HP SlateBook 14-p001tu PC pn J6M17PA (taken from the site in the post). If you go to this site
cplonline.com.au/hp-slatebook-14-p001tu-pc-j6m17pa (note exactly the same model number) and see what it has to say about this device (I'll quote)

'Get the power and portability you need with this detachable PC. Enjoy the flexibility of an all-in-one, notebook, and tablet in one device..

The photo on this site shows the screen detached from the base. It has a touch screen. Sounds like a tablet to me…..

If not they'll get it back!!

        • +1

          Definitely not detachable. http://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/Product.aspx?…

Having a different model number would give it away!

        • -1

Ahhh, the model number at HP and CPOnline is actually the same. Here's yet ANOTHER site with the same device/ model id showing the screen detached from the keyboard.
          http://www.technopolis.com.au/products/15635-slatebook-14-p0…

          Tablet…..

        • No, the one u mention is totally different. It's with windows and the screen was 15.6'. So yeah, I think that this cannot be used as a tablet.

        • +1

@cornucopia: Until the last time I checked this model out ,it was a laptop only mate … Hope you don't try to detach the screen :p

        • +2

          @kamban:
Well you caaaaaan, but it would be hard to re-attach (hacksaw)

        • -1

I'm sorry but you're wrong. If you go to this site

          http://www.technopolis.com.au/products/15635-slatebook-14-p0….

Note that it shows a picture of the screen detached from the keyboard.

Look at the device type, its HP SlateBook 14-p001tu PC J6M17PA (exactly the same as on the HP site) and the specs are (abbreviated here)

          Backlight Technology: LED
          Bluetooth: Yes

Exactly the same device as on the HP site, even the same colour!!

        • +2

@cornucopia: Looks like they got the wrong picture

        • @cornucopia: Don't be sorry, you are wrong too. The picture even has "SlateBook 10x2" displayed on it, which is the detachable model.

Here's a very in-depth review, it does not detach:
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZypWx5aSpZU

        • @cornucopia:
Definitely does not have detachable screen, sorry cornucopia. Looks like CPL AND Technopolis somehow both used wrong pictures. CPL showing Envy X2, Technolpolis showing Slate 10 X2 both of which DO have detachable keyboards, so its easy to see how they confused people.
The whole chassis/keyboard and general layout are very similar if not identical to the HP Chromebook 14.

        • If that's the case HP got it wrong too. The device is called a 'Slate' on the HP site. If you can't detach the keyboard it isn't a slate.

        • @cornucopia:
Yeah, I agree the naming is a bit odd.

        • +1

@King Tightarse: you can skydive without a parachute, but only once, haha

        • @King Tightarse: Actually I don't have to worry any more. The dopes from HP called me to say they have no stock and they're cancelling my order!!

  • where can i buy cheap 3t external drive?

  • where/when do you apply the code

    i get to review/submit

do you apply after you have paid?

Wow, a fanless full HD capable laptop for $169?

    le buys

I'm sure I will find a use for this.

  • Fantastic price, but I can't justify this purchase to the business manager.

    • +2

I am the business manager and I approve this purchase. :)

  • Thanks OP, ordered one.

  • Format everything and run windoze? Oops not Nvidia.

  • +1

Looks like a bargain to me! Snapped one up!

Specs say full size hdmi and usb 3.0 port which equates to a decent media device.

  • Thanks Op, Ordered 2 and will get a further 10% back at the airport

  • Looks good, can someone tell me why I need this?

    • +7

Cause you gonna feel bad after it is sold out.

    • Cause you can have a present for me

    • +1

Couldnt tell you, but didnt stop me!

      • +1

I was almost tempted to sock-puppet to vote you up twice, but that's taking a freeby too far apparently :-p

I've been wanting a tablet for digital comic reading and netflix binging for some time but haven't found something with full hd that i thought was worth the money. Hopefully this satisfies those two requirements, for 170$ I'm willing to give it a shot.

    • This isn't a tablet, it's a laptop. They keyboard doesn't un-clip.

      • yup

  • If there was Audacity for Android, I'd by a cheap pair of shades and run with this. Kingsoft office and VLC are available, and there are Dosbox knock-offs. The HDMI and DOS 3.0 have got my "buy" finger trembling, but I have to also have VHS > DVD transcription capability to justify it. For some funny reason the App Store isn't brimming over with these, and I don't think there will be a page full of BASIC in a magazine any time soon.
"Sweet yellow" tho - Shocking Pink I could have explained away as matching my Bunnikins cup…

  • Purchased one with cashrewards. Not sure why, but will be interesting.

  • Got one thanks OP!

  • Would have probably bought this if I don't already have my transmart dongle for casting and my ps3 for netflix already.

  • Aha! I knew the code would lead to a brilliant bargain. Hope they will deliver it.

  • +1

I also could not resist. USB 3, NVidia graphics, FHD screen, 9 hour battery, quad core, 2GB, 32GB Flash for $170. I couldn't not click on it.
Its like an awesome tablet with great speakers, but permanently attached keyboard - hey, at least it will keep the screen up like a "kickstand".
MS Office was recently released (for free) for android tablets, which will be awesome on this.
    MS Word https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.…

Next step - see if Windows 10 will support it. Ond of course the 64 GB sd card from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/195297

Those things have their problems. I've never had a pleasant experience with editing documents with Android, they tend to crash very frequently. Onenote on Android can only sync from Onedrive and from nothing else (i.e. offline file for example), which makes it slightly annoying to use (I gave up using it). Granted, it may be because of the high resolution on the tablet that I own or the fact that I use bluetooth keyboard, which this PC doesn't suffer from. That being said, just know the limitations of those, it's not an experience that's on par with Office on Windows.

      • Office on Windows tablets is too annoying for me with desktop mode in 8.1.
Anyhow, for $170 I am willing to see how it goes.
If nothing else, I can use it at the Regus for 8 hours on free wifi…..

        • At least it doesn't crash 3 times within 5 minutes or shuts down unexpectedly and make you lose 5~10 minutes of work. I got burnt fairly badly with those, I try not to use Android tablets for document editing for that reason. Trying to use Onenote is a joke since Onedrive syncs horribly slowly and fails to sync half the time, MS doesn't allow the Onenote on Android app to read offline files of the Onenote, so you end up in a situation where half the file is "syncing" for a long long long time (then crashes for no reason and starts the process all over).

Granted, it was around 2 months ago, so they may have fixed a lot of these, but just be aware, Android doesn't work like Windows. The experience you get out from these would not match Office for Windows. Don't go in expecting, it's going to work like how it worked on Windows, it's an official app for Office. That's all I wanted to say.

        • @AznMitchDonT start me on Onenote with onedrive, ugggh!

        • @Jackson: If they are trying to recreate their reputations with IE onto this new platform, I think they are doing very well.

        • +1

@AznMitch: I think I got you, and a double negative isn't a positive I am this case! I recently nearly lost a weeks worth of notes (a tab in a Onenote workbook) and a friend told me to set the machine to local login only and see if it came back, and lo and behold it just reappeared. Not sure why that works (obviously the data is still locally stored but why it disappeared without ability to roll back to backup I have no idea). Saved me quite a few hours and not something I would have thought of on my own

    • Is MS Office supported on this device?

      • Microsoft has their Office apps on Google Play and if for whatever reason the device isn't listed as being compatible, then you can sideload it. The Slatebook also comes with Kingsoft Office preloaded.
