One day I'll finally bite the bullet and get an SSD…

One day? I'm surprised you've survived this long without one!

  • I paid $266AUD delivered for one of these in a previous deal. Awesome SSD

      ORLY?
sure it was not the EVO?

Good price for a higher end SSD. Too bad I already got Crucial M550.

  • So i'm assuming there won't be any warranty on items from Amazon? Just debating whether I should get this or the same thing at 349 on shoppingexpress

    • I thought there was…maybe someone with experience can comment….

An OZB user reported that he had to post the SSD back to US ($28 postage out of his/her pocket). The SSD died after 2.5 years and the manufacturer replaced it with a refurbished drive (but a slightly newer model).

For me, one of my Samsung SSDs died recently (after about 2 years of very light usage - less than 500 hours; less than 1TB of total writes). I had to post it to Samsung (in NSW). Waiting for them to send me a replacement (I would expect a refurbished SSD). Honestly, not a fan of refurbished SSDs or HDDs. The RMA is a lengthy process.

The Samsung SSD basically died all of the sudden, no warning. My two oldest SSDs are now both broken (neither one of them lasted more than 2.5 years). I suggest that you avoid spending too much on an SSD unless you really have a need to use a 512GB or 1TB SSD. Always have a backup of key files on a traditional hard drive.

      • Was it a Samsung Evo or Pro that died?

        • It was a 250GB Samsung 840 (the one without Evo). It appears that Samsung replaced it with a 512GB 850 EVO based on the e-mail they sent me. I have yet to receive the drive though. I really hope it is 850 EVO because I know 840 EVO has the read bug and the firmware fix is a workaround (move every file to a new block every 3 months). I hope it is a brand new one because if it is refurbished 850 EVO, what does that tell you about 850 EVO?

I have quite a number of Samsung SSDs (inc. Pro ones) and now I am worried. As mentioned previously, my oldest Samsung SSD has !@#!@#.

        • @netsurfer:
Yeah, better back up regularly and have a spare SSD ready. My oldest SSDs are Intel x25m, no problem so far for 4 years. Looks like I'll stick to Intel in the future, despite Samsung Pro's tempting speeds.

        • @nfr: Okay, received the SSD now. It is 850 EVO 500GB as indicated in the e-mail. Looks like a new one (sealed). It is kind of good in a way. I was quite upset about Samsung not releasing a firmware fix for 840 (it has the same read slowdown issue as 840 EVO). I hope 850 EVO does not have the same issue.

I did lose a large number of files. SSD tend to just die without any warning sign.
