Sonos USA has released a twin pack of PLAY:1 speakers for USD $349.

Surprisingly Amazon will ship these to Australia unlike all other Sonos speakers.

Postage to Melbourne is a bit steep at USD $41.50 but after conversion the cost per speaker is around AUD $245.

Current local price is AUD $329.

Will run fine on 240v with a plug adaptor or cheap replacement cord.

Price History at C CamelCamelCamel.

  • Nice. Makes them cheap enough to hack/mod :)

Curious, what hacks/mods can you do to Sonos speakers??

      • Big one for me is to run them from DC using an inexpensive step-up converter. This would then allow them to run off a battery pack which would then make it possible to rehouse them in a 'weatherproof' type enclosure to create the ultimate portable outdoor SONOS… but knowing my luck I'd just get my prototype finished as they released a full commercial version so I'm not sure if I'll bother. It's what's been missing from the SONOS family though! Taking the concept one step further, a decent solar panel could be incorporated into the design allowing them to be installed permanently anywhere in the garden.

    • Interesting project to route Airplay direct to a Sonos speaker. Google "airsonos" for more info.

      • I have no Apple products, never needed them so that's not much use to me sorry.

Me either but if you want multi-room audio you can run Airfoil on a Windows PC targeting Airplay compatible speakers (eg. Samsung) or receivers (eg. Pioneer).

So the Sonos speaker is now optionally an Airplay speaker. I believe the Airplay stream can then be distributed any other Sonos speaker.

Basically it avoids the need for a Sonos line-in which is only available on $500+ components.

          It's an impressive hack regardless.

        • @myfeetarehappy: Ah, gotcha. Nice hack! Luckily I mainly have CONNECT units around the house so this isn't an issue either :)

        • @SteveAndBelle: Nice. Do you play music from local storage or a streaming service?

        • @myfeetarehappy: Mainly FLACs stored on my NAS but also Vinyl via one or two vintage systems and one or two streaming radio services.

  • It's annoying how you have to be a 'premium' Spotify user in order to stream music via the Sonos app. I usually stream it on my non-premium account as I'm fine with the ads. Would using Airfoil be able to let me stream my non-premium Spotify to the Sonos? Or would I still need to 'hack' the Sonos to set it up?

    • I believe you would still need to use the "airsonos" hack method then play Spotify to the Sonos via Airplay (requires Airfoil on a PC)…sounds pretty complicated versus getting a premium account LOL

  • Great stuff. Thanks for the post. Just ordered one (two?). Bought a Play:1 for $329 two weeks ago - loving it - coupled with Google Play Music it's just an awesome setup. When my (really poor) internet service kicks it, the play streams from my NAS. Just need to find some way to justify the second and third Play:1s with the wife ….

  • For what it's worth, the current price is AUD 518.88.

  • Still tempted by this. I'm in the process of trying to sell my Play 5 at the moment, was thinking I'd use that money to invest in the two Play 1's. I bought a Playbar recently, so would like the option to have the surround setup, plus the extra portability of the 1's in comparison to the 5. Although the 5 is excellent so will be sad to say goodbye.

Does anyone know what the best option / price is for an AUD replacement plug / cord if buying these US models?
