  • being looking at getting one of these for a while, cheers.

  • Are these any good?

    • Yes, they are pretty good for a hobbyist iron.

    • +9

Given the choice I'd probably get the Hobbyking Hakko Knockoff

      • Having had both I would get the Hakko knock off too.

      • +3

I love my ~$30 Hakko knockoff. Bought an assortment of seemingly very decent quality tips off eBay for a couple of bucks a pop and it suits my needs down to the ground.

      • MY Hobbyking one only lasted a couple of uses.

        • only a couple?

          that's shit..

          What broke?

      • +1

Couldn't agree more. I bought multiple HobbyKing irons, two for myself and a few extras for friends which helped push the price down to under $20 a piece. I then bought slightly larger size Hakko tips for $1 each off eBay as the standard tips on the HobbyKing were far too pointy/fine for general use. Amazing irons for the price and all mine are still working perfectly so when HobbyKing has another sale I highly recommend we OzBargain the crap out of them.

        • Can you provide us some ebay links that you put from?

ARe you hobby king model 936?

        • @tyler.durden: Yep, I got several of the 900M-T-B type tips for $1 each: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Hot-Sale-900M-T-B-936-Replace-Pen… They are supplied in what seems to be genuine HAKKO packaging stating 'Made in Japan' and they work really nicely. Not too big yet not as pointy & sharp as the tip that came supplied with the HobbyKing 936 rip-off iron. Far easier to keep clean too.. just a quick dab on the moist sponge as you remove or replace the iron from its holder and these tips will stay in tip-top shape for a very long time.

        • @SteveAndBelle:

          I agree

When I open the hobby king and saw the tip

          I thought it was good
but after using it, I find it not good day to day usage cause it is too fine/small.

So it takes longer to heat solder joints.

It might be good for tight spaces/sold points though.

I also find that sponge supplied quite thin.

Do u think getting these multi tips good or good value for money?

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/10-x-Soldering-Tip-for-936-937-St…

          ==
Also why do they make 936 rip off instead of just a normal soldering one?

        • @tyler.durden: Yep, looks like that pack of tips would work however I'm not sure how many of those you'd actually use. Up to you but a few of the basic tips should work for most jobs.

The Hakko 936 was to 'go-to' Soldering Station for millions of service people around the world. It just made sense with its basic practical design so it's no wonder it was ripped-off by Yihua. A Soldering Station uses a transformer to lower the voltage for more accurate heat control and faster heat-up. This allows the Iron itself to be smaller & lighter plus the cable to the Iron can also be made a lot thinner & more flexible than a standard 240V Iron.

        • @SteveAndBelle:

Do u think these rip off are actually coming from the same factories?
just rebranded and use slightly cheaper components?

Since most of these hakko likely made in china..

How do chinese make the exact same looking knockoff of Apple products e.g. lightning cable etc.?

        • @tyler.durden: I'd say they use lower quality components in the rip-offs BUT they still work perfectly well.

        • @SteveAndBelle:

But u reckon they come from same factories?
since it is all from china?

How else would they get knockoff to look almost exact.

    • These are really good irons for the price.

I've had mine for about 10 years, never had an issue - heats up very fast.

      • +1

They have been the same design since the 80's, so a proven setup.

    • I've also had mine for about 10 years. Would prefer some smaller tips but it's great.

      • -4

        Would prefer some smaller tips

        Don't use too much flux.

      • You can get small tips for these - that's what I use..

Let's play the "mine's smaller than your's game". Oh hang on, that's not right..

  • can it support a optional heatgun?

    • +1

There's no fan in the base, so I doubt it. Get a 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 off ebay if you want a heat gun and/or power supply.

      • Thanks. eBay's quality make me worry, so preferred retailers

        • +2

          eBay's quality make me worry

          eBay aren't a manufacturer…

        • Jaycar

  • If you prefer delivery, postage costs apply.

Yes, we love paying for delivery

  • Can you change the tips on this? If so, what are compatible?

    • I wouldn't buy this..

I have a similiar one from Dick smith
They told me they no longer stock other types of tips.

  • Can't see any available in Brisbane. All shown as sold out. Delivery is $9.95

  • When will there be a good deal for a weller station!
I'm dead without it and it died 2 months ago (after 7years)… Resorting to a "doss" station that f***ed two irons in 2 months. Anyone found any weller decent deals please Let me (us ) know.

  • All this talk of the hobbyking station. I need one ATM so I looked it up.

It is currently $23 + $28 shipping to Melbourne.

Last deal was 1 and a half years ago.

    I don't know if it's fair comparison.

    • Maybe a group deal is worth the while?
I was looking and it costs ~$36 AUD including postage for 10 units. Any interest for one or five?

      • Well I'm in for 1 if it's Melbourne.

        • I'm located in Melbourne

        • @fanuch:

Well that's 2/10. Not sure where to recruit others.

If it gets the go ahead please let me know.

        • @fufufu: it comes to ~$48 if we get 5 units

        • @fanuch:

That's only a $3 saving from buying 1 individually but we'd need to arrange pickup for people etc. Not really worth it IMO.

        • @fufufu: I think the price you saw was for USD and from the US, there is a separate button for international. Comes to $50.97 AUD for one for me.

        • @fanuch:

Doesn't change anything? 23+28=51, 51-48=3 dollars in saving if we buy 5 units.

8xAA Glitter pack $7.49! Hang on, something not quite right there …

    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/hot-deals/ds-glitter-batteries-a…

  • It's a good unit with good temp control. I have had mine for over ten years with heaps of use.

  • i have had one for a while, cant seem to get it hot enough to quickly melt solder. seems to not be hot enough to "tin" stripped copper wire… too far out of warranty to do anything about it.

  • I wouldn't buy this..

I have a similiar one from Dick smith
They told me they no longer stock other types of tips.

Better just to get the hobby king ones..

more tips can be bought on ebay…

  • +1

Wonder how much ozbargainers have bought this cause it is cheap but have no idea how to use it or what it is? 2000+ clicks.

  • yes. why is this so good? better than the ebay aus deals?
