  • Personally, I'm not a fan of Paradox Interactive games purely because of the sheer amount of DLC their games usually come with. They do this kind of thing a lot: put just the base game in a bundle then reap all the rest of the dosh through DLC purchases.

I guess get this bundle if you're really into these games but maybe wait a bit for the complete editions if you want everything at a fraction of the price. I may pay for the $1 tier myself though.

    • +1

I see where you're coming from. However, normally, the base game is enough content for hundreds upon hundreds of hours already. I am a huge fan of vanilla Crusader Kings 2, Cities in Motion, Magicka, Cities Skylines and Mount and Blade, and can say that not one of those are beneath 50 hours played in my library. Plus I find Paradox DLC to be cheap and add in only tiny additions.

It's nowhere near comparable to Evolve and Titanfall monster ripoffs, the EA and Ubisoft way of releasing games, where you get a tiny chunk of the game and then a bunch of DLC that adds in the actual videogame part of the experience well after the community is dead and doesn't care anymore. Of course, that's a few months after the Day 1 DLC.

I would say Paradox are my favourite PC publishers because they worry about getting the game finished before whipping the devs into doing DLC. No Day 1 DLC here, but check back next week for about 19 different horse armour packs!

      • I made a similar comment on a different web forum that got taken badly so I guess I'll clarify here as well. My comment isn't saying that they're being unethical or anything like that. From a completionist perspective, these titles are a nightmare to deal with. I don't care if the DLCs offer small amounts of content. I still consider them as part of the whole package which I'm not going to pay individually for. These titles always end up with a complete package of some sorts which I'm happy to wait for.

I guess everyone has a different idea of value in video games. Some people might say this deal is great since they might love the games themselves but I personally think it's mediocre because waiting longer will usually result in a complete package. I still think it's fair to warn people what they're getting into even if the DLC themselves apparently aren't that game changing.

        • I bought the entirety of Magicka for $12 in a sale, and I've never played anything but the Vanilla and played around with some costumes…… because Warhammer 40K Wizards.

Also, good guy Paradox, when playing online multiplayer with friends (in some of these titles) only one person actually needs the multiplayer content to get access to all of it! (I played CK2 online with a friend recently to confirm this). I'd like to see EA add something like that.

        • @FrankMcFuzz: I said 'multiplayer content' but I meant DLC. Herp :3

    • Come on; they are nothing compared to EA / Ubisoft pre-order bullshit.

  • War of the Roses Kingmaker is effectively dead with one server with people on it in Japan that lags badly enough to make it random click more than playing. Devs have written off the game since it was so full of hackers and it was too hard to fix. Not sure about the others in the bundle and could still be good for a LAN party.

    • Your comment made me curious. According to steam charts, it had a maximum of 3 players in 2013. It sounds like the game never took off.

I was expecting to see sites full of complaints about bugs and cheating, but didn't see any at a glance.

Reviews were overall mixed but positive.

      • Because Kingmaker is just DLC content, War of the Roses is the actual game.

      • War of the Roses was pretty decent when it first came out. I think it died after Kingmaker came out though (probably divided the community too much?)

  • I was hoping for Hearts of Iron 3 expansions to be included; I already have pretty much all of these games.
How am I going to ensure victory for the Third Reich without all of Paradox's DLC.

  • I've already scored half these games from previous bundles, so I'd effectively just be paying for Europa Universalis IV - for A$6, it's still a great price though.

  • What the best and SIMPLEST "Grand Strategy" game to start off with if never played that genre before eg. Hearts of iron, Victoria 2, Europa Universalis IV?????

    • Can't say any of them are the "simplest" they all have a degree of difficulty. Europa Universalis IV is a great game but you should be prepared to either wing it in-game or watch a bunch of YouTube tutorials.
