UPDATE

Thanks for all the comments, questions and thoughts.

It seems many people have the same question, how effective is it for successful delivery? Although we have conducted surveying and had a lot of positive feedback it is difficult to gauge this accurately without exact figures.

Accordingly as an Ozbargain specific offer, we've decided to further discount (via cashback) a number of boxes to those Ozbargainers who are willing to provide detailed feedback on their delivery experience for a period of 3 months.

Criteria are as follows, PM us if you are interested in participating:
-you must receive a minimum of 2 deliveries per week- period starts from first item addressed to Parcel Box
-delivery address must be in Sydney, Melb, Perth, Adelaide or Brisbane metro area
-feedback must be sent monthly (within one week of ) identifying successful and unsuccessful deliveries including carrier and tracking number as well as signature requirements (if delivery is tracked/signature is required)
-you must be willing to take steps to assist successful delivery
-cashback of $50 will be returned via paypal or direct deposit at the conclusion of 3 months and 3 detailed feedback reports covering a minimum of 8 deliveries

This will give us some better data to work with and allow us to contact particular carriers and Auspost distribution centres to improve their service to parcel box units.

No doubt everyone is frustrated with missing deliveries, however by participating you'll give us the ability to present some concrete data (which Auspost have agreed to pass on) and improve delivery rates.

If you already have one of our units or any other parcel box unit we'd also be grateful for your data.

how does this stop the need for having a signature?

  • +1

If there was ever a fitting product for a true blu OzBargainer, this is it.

  • Without the need for a signature and because of availability of the PIN to any courier, what's to stop theft by the courier or the Post Office? They just have to nick something and blame another courier.

    • change the pin everytime

      • True, that's a partial solution, but what if I can't predict the order of arrival of parcels?

        • do you honestly get that many parcels a day?

        • +1

@furythree: Not often, but occasionally. The main problem is if you are also ordering from overseas, the goods can be a couple of weeks or a month in arriving and it's genuinely impossible to tell what order they will arrive in.

        • @hangdog: there can definitely be an issue with changing PINs if you have deliveries over that period of time, which is why the option of leaving the door unlocked and simply having an instruction to place it inside and lock the door is useful.

Our unit provides this option by virtue of the lock we have used.

The issue of the next courier stealing a pre-existing delivery is pretty unlikely though unless you routinely leave your home for long periods or dont track items or check if you have a delivery.

A fair few things have to come together before this happens in any event
-a dishonest delivery driver who is
-willing to risk their job by stealing while on duty (especially when there is likely to be a record that they were at that house with another delivery)
-there being a pre-existing item in the box
-that item being something the driver prizes highly (if that can be established from the package) enough to steal
-or a driver who recalls the number from a previous delivery and stops by to check if there is a delivery and if its something they might want on the off chance the code hasnt been changed

The reality is that any delivery driver who has an ATL an item on your doorstep could steal it every time or collect an item left on your door mat without narrowing the parameters of who may have taken it.

At least with a set PIN the number of people who have access to it are very limited and its a temporary number which can be changed easily using the mastercode on our electronic lock.

        • @myparcelbox: Thanks for your detailed answer. I guess I might not be the target customer as I was burned to the tune of $600 by an Authority To Leave a few years ago. I can see the value of the system for lower-cost items.

What's the advantage of MyParcel box over Pakman?

Pakman is $199 from bunnings any day of the week. I personally prefer pakman's design too.

I was looking at buying a Pakman
    http://www.bunnings.com.au/pakman-off-white-parcel-delivery-…

    • +2

I think Pakman is better value. I bought one a few weeks ago :)
These guys have the Pakman for $180: http://www.gotstock.com.au/pakman-parcel-box-400mm-x-909mm-x…
Bunnings price-beat it by 10% for me, making it really cheap.
Also bought the top attachment for normal mail. In my opinion this constitutes better value. It is quite large.

The Pakman ones have a barcode which can be scanned. If registered with MyLocate or with certain couriers directly, they can scan the barcode in lieu of a signature.

      • Sweet! i was gonna get the top letter box too.

looks like pakman is gaining ground over parcelbox.

        • +1

When you buy both together, you get free shipping from "gotstock", which means Bunnings does not take shipping cost into account when pricebeating. Just show the URL on your phone.
I did have some issues attaching the top letter box to the bottom - screws did not go into thread properly, and thread was rotating. Had to attach using bolt and nut through the holes.

        • +1

@Make it so: Thanks Make it so! might pick one up on the weekend. $215.1 for both is awesome.
Thanks for tip regarding the screws, it's not a deal breaker for me, as long as there is a way around it.

      • Both units have a barcode which can be scanned, we understand only Fastway will use this in lieu of a signature, Auspost definitely will not.

If you are looking for a more lightweight option to replace your letterbox Pakman may be for you however you may face issues with delicate items being dropped through the chute and there may be problems associated with having a kerbside parcel unit with a chute also.

As I mentioned below we have been contacted previously by a Pakman customer who had their chute wrenched out of their unit, so this is also something to consider.

        • +2

There are pro's and con's to everything. Not sure someone would readily break into my Pakman just in case it has something inside (it just looks like an oversized letterbox). Your product looks more solid, but that may backfire: it looks like a safe, which is not necessarily a good thing. I would not want to put anything at the kerbside that looks like it is intended to hold expensive items, because the whole thing will be gone within a week (if they can't break it on the spot, they'll take the whole thing and open it later).

Of course neither solution is of any use if Australia Post delivers parcels to the wrong address, which happened to me recently (totally different street - go figure). I just wanted something which stopped them from leaving things at my front door.

Only $170 delivered to any state in Australia.

What if I'm not home when you deliver it ???

    • Haha jv. Classic.

    • +1

Ask the courier to lock it to a post.

    • +2

You'll have to buy a Pakman from Bunnings first

  • +2

Tuzii- thanks to Aupost's wisdom, there is no system apart from their own lockers that obviate the need for signature.

Hangdog- you can change the code between deliveries or if you leave it unlocked and return home nightly you can remove the package

Kwetty- its stronger (thicker galvanised steel), we have also had reports of the chute on the Pakman being pulled out to get at the contents), has a better lock, allows placement of fragile items inside rather than having them thrown through the chute and has the ability to be temporarily fixed outside a rental property, you dont have to empty it every time you just want to collect letters and it fits in larger parcels

JV-if you're not at home we'll have the courier leave it at your door! At 21kg its unlikely someone will run away with it.

    • Does it come with one of those fancy little red flags you put up when theres mail inside?

      • no it doesnt to avoid possible attempted theft of items. It does come with a sticker to place on your mail box or door to indicate to the courier that you have a Vault unit and a missed delivery card should not be left

        • +2

Does it come with Camera installed to prove ( by video ) that the parcel has been dropped. What if there are more parcels coming the same day. You know, those 30-45 days deliveries, I loose track somehow.

        • +2

          @cameldownunder:
hmm we may have to offer that in model 2. Pehaps one of those 30-45 delivery days could include a wireless ip camera which would be pretty easy to set up

        • @myparcelbox: Whay if someone orders a Wifi Jammers in a 30-40 Days delivery ? Might get a Dog, and train him to sign my parcels :-)

  • +3

Doesn't seem very secure if you are handing out the pin with your address.

    • If you are concerned about that aspect, we recommend regularly updating the PIN between orders or leaving the door unlocked for placing the delivery inside

  • +9

This won't help you get parcels when the delivery man just drops a card in the letterbox without making any attempt whatsoever to actually deliver the item.

This is a frequent occurrence at my place…

    • Hmm yeah we have dealt with that in a few areas- usually we let Auspost or the relevant courier know. The sticker on the letterbox assists with this a fair bit. Also once your courier gets used to the system and realises its faster than filling a card out, you should have no problems

      • +3

I wish you well with AusPost. I've let them know my preferences for parcel delivery on several occasions in the past, via Facebook, email, phone, and in-person. All efforts have been as effective as a fart in a hurricane.

        • it's because they contract out the delivery to third party contractors.

these guys are often lazy and dont want to do the actual deliveries & want to save cost. so just put a card in and dump all the parcels at the post office

  • +4

Rep - which courier companies have agreed to use this system rather than signature on request?

    • +1

Couriers please, TNT, Fastway, Direct, CTI and Action have all agreed to use it.

For other carriers you need to specify that you give authority to leave it in the My Parcel Box unit and instruct the seller not to require a signature.

      • Thanks. Would be good to get DHL, Startrack and Fedex to agree as well. Good luck with this. Great idea but unfortunately the need for signature isnt going away anytime soon.

  • +2

I have a much cheaper system - I just get everything delivered to work. There's always someone there that can receive the parcel.

    • Its great that works for you, however many businesses do not accept personal deliveries and depending on your volume it may not be practical.

  • I could see this working, but everything I order comes in oversized boxes (eg. whatever is on hand).

There's very little chance a pccasegear delivery (although those can be rescheduled or ATL'ed if via courier) or shoppingexpress trifecta would fit in this product.

    • The unit fits in two 12 bottle cases of wine, so holds a fair amount. Without knowing the dimensions of your deliveries its a little hard to say. Should an item not fit, couriers simply follow their normal failed delivery process.

  • I've never actually had something that was left outside go missing, but on multiple occasions I have had parcels never turn up (it's funny how cartons of wine get lost in the system so often and can't be traced despite everything being scanned into each leg of the journey), and also delivered to the wrong address (thank goodness for the honesty of the lucky recipient and dropping it to my place).

So for this kind of idea to work I would need to send the parcelbox to the supplying company before they ship anything to me, then have them send me my package already in the parcelbox. Unfortunately that really isn't an option.

    • Great you haven't had anything taken locutus, surveying indicates about 30% of people have had items stolen so no doubt its more of an issue in other areas.

Its also often left to a courier's discretion as to whether its safe to drop an item on a doorstep and this accounts for a lot of failed deliveries

  • Both this and the Pakman's design works on the assumption that the delivery person can be expected to do the right thing. So far, (even mentioned in previous comments), communicating with any delivery persons with instructions have been completely futile. Also, most of the overseas cheap packages come via AusPost, even if it was handled by a courier when it was overseas (All my Massdrop packages come that way).

    • That's not entirely true. The Pakman has a chute, such that you do not have to give a code to a courier unless the package is really huge or fragile, in which case you need to give them the code to the door. I would not buy a box like this which requires a code for every delivery. Only very few companies will let you give them the code.
But I have had multiple Amazon deliveries left at my door, as well as other things delivered by Australia Post. Hence my choice for the Pakman.
Of course the mailman needs to make the effort of opening the chute…. no guarantees there.

      • +1

Our unit doesnt require a PIN for ever delivery- you have the option of leaving the door unlocked and having the courier lock it after dropping the parcel.
The PIN is placed in the address in any event, its not a matter of them letting you give them the code.

Agree that deliveries to parcel boxes aren't perfect though and as you can see from the update on the post above we're trying to collect some data on delivery to all types to improve delivery rates.

        • Your proactive attitude is great. Maybe you should consider multiple models, some with ordinary mail slot added on top, or some slightly smaller fence/wall mounted options. Letterboxes in Australia are a joke - you are in the right market.

        • @Make it so: Thanks for the kind comment!

We've looked at a number of alternative models but for now are focused on this one- the option of being able to temporarily fit it for the rental market (or people who only want to have it outside their house sometimes)

The delivery market generally is moving towards drop offs at central locations because this suits the needs of carriers who are constantly being pushed to provide cheaper service. This may work well in dense urban environments but doesn't suit the majority of Australians and we don't have the population to support it.

Consumers (and the environment) lose in this model though as unless there are pick up points at locations you must visit anyway, you end up travelling to collect something you paid to have delivered. (whether it's inc in the price of the item or added on)

Unless as consumers we require that we get the service we paid for, the self collect model will become the norm.
