  • I was just looking at this on the Philips site - but have a query. I can cope with the "Zero watt switch" [translation, it has a power switch at the back] bumph, but what is it with the " MHL-HDMI (needs MHL cable)" port being touted as an extra in addition to the standard HDMI ports? I have a MHL cable and compatible devices - and use it to connect to [ wait for it] a HDMI port. That's what it does. Unless there is something I've missed, it is a bit like advertising a fuel cap on a car, and an extra one with a tube below it for the nozzle to go…

That aside, this is a nice unit:-)

There is something you've missed. You can charge your phone through the MHL-HDMI port on this TV (while also outputting video). You can't through the normal HDMI port.

      • Right - so the USB port on the MHL cable - which charges my Nexus and powers the MHL adapter - is redundant and you don't need to use the TV's USB port or a wall-wart to power the cable. TY for that.

        • +1

          Good for Chromecasts too.

        • @dazweeja: Anything which lessens the spaghetti:-)

    • MHL requires the port to be capable of decoding the MHL spec, SlimPort (which is used in the Nexus 4,5,6 and 7 (as far as I know, docs are scarce and I only have the 5)) doesn't and will work with most hardware.

      • The "MHL" spec is called "HDMI". I have not come across a HDMI equipped unit in my house which doesn't display my 2011 nexus screen, and none of mine date from the introduction of the MHL Ready claim for monitors, which is why I asked, and dasweeja explained. The decoding depends on the chip on the sending unit and the data is sent uncompressed.

  • Nice unit for sure.

Just want to say 40” won’t be comfortable for playing video games or navigating webs. For movies and stuffs I rather sit in my lounge and watch them on TV. Personal preference of computer monitor size is 27”.

This monitor must be designed for CG artists or sort of.

    • why its not comfortable?

      • +3

I tend to agree - with 27" you can be "involved" with the screen, and see the entire screen with little movement of your head, wheres you need to be either a lot further back, or actually turning in your seat to view the whole monitor when it's this size. I'd find it a little like the difference between reading a magazine, and reading an advertising bill-board. The objective size ratio of the screen in your vision may be the same, but the scale of the screen balanced against it's surround would turn it from an immersive to a receptive experience.

Then again, when I got my first paper-white 12" VGA, I couldn't imagine how those x-term users in geek castle managed to use those tiny little x-windows icons on those massive 21" Suns..

        • Just use 27" of the 40" then. Put windows you don't look at much up high or on the sides. Good for things like live share charts. I'm running a 55" and it's like having 4 of my iMac 24" screens joined together AND without borders.

I guess gamers may not be able to reduce the size below full screen.

You sound like one of those TV salesmen who used to say the preferred TV size if you are sitting 2m from the TV is 40".

      What a load of bunkum…

      • Not at all. the salesman was telling you sincerely what his preferred size for you to buy was :-p

    • My opinion is the opposite. Have a 40" tv as my main gaming monitor for my pc in the computer room and love it. And this is on a large computer table not on the other side of the room. Would never go smaller. If I had the cash would buy this in a heartbeat.

  • Any discount on shipping, I don't want to pay $43 shipping to other state.

    • Unfortunately no discount on the shipping, the box these come in is pretty big!

      • Surely you can work something out for me :)

  • I have one of these and paid $950ex from my wholesaler only 3 weeks ago. this is a great deal.
The 40" is fine for gaming, I sit about 1m away from it and not had a problem. The only issue is the lack of adjustment from the stand.
    Great 4k for the price.

  • Nice price

    Read the review here

    http://www.techradar.com/au/reviews/pc-mac/monitors-and-proj…

Seems like viewing angles aren't great and it isn't adjustable. Still it costs a lot less than competing 30" monitors….

  • Also bought one from PCCG a few weeks ago mainly for gaming, love it. My only gripe would be the buttons are on the back of the screen.

  • So is it true 60hz at all resolutions up to 4k?

  • I wonder if my twin GTX590's be up to the task ……… probably crap them selves and force me to upgrade.

    • The 1.5GB vram per GPU may struggle, and according to nvidia only the DVI outputs can be used with 590's in SLI.

I'm running two 780ti's through DP and it works great, the 3GB vram isn't limiting as I don't use AA at 4k.

  • OP, when will this deal expired? until stock sold out?

    • We should be able to hold it open to the end of the weekend but yes it does depend on stock lasting!

      • +1

Nice, Finally put in the Order, spoke to Michael, he'll shipped it out today..can't wait.

  • How do these get shipped to Melbourne addresses? I assume I'd need to be home to take delivery. I won't be getting it delivered to work as I wouldn't fancy taking this home on the train in peak hour :)

    • You can choose between AusPost eParcel Registered / Express or Startrack Same Day Courier.

The eParcel registered is free for Melbourne metro and the Express services you'll need to punch your postcode into our website for a price.

      • Hmmm. I'd probably rather pick up because I'm not home during business hours, but not open Saturday. Very tempting, but getting it is awkward.
I'm just wondering if it will go in a parcel locker. Aust Post say it can be up to 22kg, but only 105cm. I'm guessing the box is bigger.

        • If I live in Melb, I'll just rock up in store and get it ;)

        • @kevin22:

Yeah but they only open Monday-Friday, 9-5 :)

Gonna try parcel locker. If it's too big it should end up at the PO. Hopefully in one piece

  • Ordered! Now what to do with my Dell U3011 :)

  • any indication of when you will get more stock?
