Such a shame it doesn't have USB 3.0

    • Filling 16.72GB available (Jabba the Hutt) at USB 2 speeds will not take that long ;)
VGA Webcam - Pixelated video chats a bonus as well :)

      • There is a micro SD slot for adding up to 64GB extra storage if you must have all those movies on your device.
Believe it or not, some people only want internet browsing and basic office requirements and this will suit their purpose.

  • Normal price $298

I guess tablets haven't killed of netbooks yet.

    • +8

They just started calling netbooks "notebooks", because most people don't know an atom from a celeron from an i7 anyway…

      • I thought the cut off was 10 inch and 11.6 inch, I always considered the former a netbook and the latter a notebook

  • The spec is exactly same as my chinese windows tablet except for screen size and resolution. I wouldn't get my hopes up.

if u try it in store, it is actually pretty smooth. For the price its a perfect replacement of an iPad for mobile work, eg word, excel.

      • Any electronic device in the store will work flawlessly as the memory is clean
Once you use it, install program's, use memory, multitask then it heats up and the problems begin

        • +1

So to keep it running smooth we would have to buy it and never use it?

    • +1

I bought one for my son to use at school (BYOD) and I think it's pretty good.
It's obviously no gaming power house but it seems fine for it's intended purpose.
I've elected not to install Office 365 for now, opting for LibreOffice instead.
Battery life is phenomenal - at least 7hrs - which is the main reason I chose this one.

Our school requires minimum i5 & 4GB ram so no good in QLD.

        • +3

Who sets the minimum req anyway? i5 kind of overkill for school, unless they intend to use the same laptop for like 4 years.

        • +1

Overzealous, paper MCSE IT managers that have nfi and take their cues from the HP/Lenovo account manager who supplies the school bought option

        • @Jackson:

All BYOD, the school does sfa to help.

        • @crohns:good reason to get what u want then

        • @blahman:
          Exactly!
At my sons school they stipulated that there are more powerful computers available to the students should they need them for something like video editing.
For internet browsing and document writing, i5 is unnecessary.

  • so i managed to find a decent use for atom powered windows tablet or netbook is to use it as stream client. stream either vnc or splashtop or steam streaming from desktop to your tablet or netbook. much better than trying to use 1-2gb ram with an atom cpu to get productivity or gaming done. its usefuk for when im in bed and want to get work done, but office runs too slow on 1.33ghz, off a slow micro sd card, with 1gb ram (encore mini 7)

Great little device. Using it for uni at the moment.

I've owned one of these a few months. Very happy with it.

    Pros
    Very light
Easily 8-10 hours battery usage - it's seriously good
Wifi range is surprisingly very good.
No heat + No fans + no noise = thumbs up

    Cons
Processor is fairly slow. Fine for internet, office and scummvm tho.
Cannot install Linux easily. Just don't bother.

JB HIFI con - they don't seem to stock any colour but blue.

10 hours on a 2 cell battery? Is that with Wifi on? My ASUS Memopad FHD tablet won't last that long… though maybe that's because my tablet has a 1080p display which drains more power.

      • +1

My guess is youŕe right, but maybe the cells arent as big (as you dont have a keyboard with a battery in it). after all AAA, AA, D, C cells are all different sizes but offer the same voltage.

      • Yep wifi on closer to 8. Wifi off closer to 10.

I Have a TF810 which isn't too far off this in spec (dual not quad but faster clocked) it's fine to work from, would be fine for 99% of work, people here are always complaining about that one percent, if it's not right for you then you will already know that, for the rest of us it's fine.

  • 32GB storage!? How much of that is usable?

This is how Disk Management looked out of the box:

      16.72GB available.

    • If you want more there is a micro SD slot for up to 64GB.
I have popped one into my sons X205 though I don't expect he will really need all that for school work.

I've had some of the problems mentioned in this thread, namely:

    • Difficulty finding a way to easily create external recovery media one can be sure will work and to delete the recovery partition (which takes up 8GB of the 29GB on the eMMC).
    • Audio 'fading'. Sometimes when watching a YouTube video, for example, it will be like a ghost is pushing the volume slider up and down.
    • Touchpad gestures stop working every so often because the background program that provides them quietly dies/crashes.

On the other hand, it's the only machine that ticks some major 'netbook' boxes for me ($350 or under, fanless, spinning disk-less, 8+ hour typing/browsing battery life) apart from not being all-matte (the X205's screen is a tiresomely reflective glossy type). The competing Lenovo S20 has a fan and the Acer E3-112 has mechanical storage, and neither come close to matching the ASUS's battery life.

Does it have to be windows? Looked at Chromebooks?

  • 2gb of memory. We going back in time.

In a good way. They have shed some of the morbid obesity from Windows. Look how much storage space is free!
Sub 1kg and 10 hrs battery.

    • We bought the Asus T100 with keyboard when Dick Smith & ebay had the last promo @ $335 (then got the GST back due to travelling overseas).

2GB ram and it seems to be performing well. Only using it as a travellers laptop running 2013 full version of Office, Outlook and all the usual interweb stuff all via VPN client happily. Some of the excel sheets a big and 2 gig of ram is fine. Chrome seems o chew through memory if too many tabs open.
