    thanks OP, great find

  • Nice find, any idea on how much credit comes with the phone?
I might be able to use the sims for data

    • I'd say none, since the page fails to mention any bonus content.

    • From Optus website - OFFER: Receive up to 2 days of bonus credit^ on us when you activate your SIM.

I hate to be the old man here, but back in my day mobiles cost a fortune. Had you told me that one day, we'd be on an internet forum on a better than 14.4k modem, not using Netscape, talking about a streaming online movie service that you can get for free for 3 months after purchasing a (profanity) mobile phone for $14.50, I would have told you that you need to be more truthful like that nice man Bill Clinton. He'd never lie.

EDIT - Also, the 90s sucked ass.

    • +1

And sacked other things as Bill would not attest

    • +1

Clinton probably didn't think so, Monica may have.

    • +9

No, the 90s were great. Maybe you were using 14.4K, but we had cable internet with whopping 10 Mbps speeds (which many Australians still aren't reaching).

      • +1

Apart from government and perhaps some universities I did not think those speeds were available to anyone in the public then?

        • +3

I had 2.4kbps modem in 1994, 14.4kbps in 1995, 28.8kbps in 1996, then 56kbps. In 1997 we moved to a place with Foxtel and got Bigpond cable at 20Mbps.

        • +2

Nope - I was in the same boat. Optus Cable [still on it] FTW! :)

        • +1

If anyone remembers Optus@Home (JV with excite@Home from memory)…

Unlimited cable internet in the late 90's, subject to some shaping when you fell into the top 10% of usage…

        • I hope you're joking. We got Telstra cable internet in 1997. It was available to anyone in metropolitan Melbourne and Sydney and was $65 a month. Most dial-up ISPs at the time were still charging you by the hour!

        • @mskeggs:

Bigpond cable was 10 Mbps originally. It didn't increase to 30 Mbps until 2004.

        • @MrZ:

Not really I am in Sydney North West still no cable either Telstra or Optus.

        • @MrZ: Well that would explain why I did not think it was available. Was not in metropolitan at the time :)

        • @Ravensbane:

I still don't understand the guy's comment about the 90s sucking.

        • @MrZ:
Correct, typo in my post it was 10mbps.
Sadly, I live outside cable coverage now and get about 8mbps.

        • +1

@MrZ: Though I was only 8 at the start of the 90s I did rather enjoy them even if I had crappy net due to living in a small town. Movies were cheap, music was ok, and they still had video game arcades around a lot.

      "Buffering… Buffering…" = My whole '90's teenage existence

      • I used to sit there for 20 minutes waiting for a stick death movie to load on newgrounds :)

    • +2

1990s? You lucky bastard. I live in the 1980s. We had rotary-dial telephones, 1200-baud acoustic couplers, car-phones, USENET and FTP.

But there has been no revolution since then, just steady predictable progression following Moore's law etc.
Surprise since the 1990s: mobile phones got bigger!
And politicians have always lied. No change there. (Clintons problem was being caught doing it under oath.)

      • +2

Trying to speed dial on a rotary phone to be first caller to the radio station. Those were the days

      • Not mine. My phone now is smaller than the Nokia 1610 I was using in 1996, but it's larger than the 8210 I had in 2000.

    • -1

Bill clearly was a head of his time.

      (See what I did there :-) )

  • +3

You haven't said what plan it is.

    • +27

It's the free Netflix throw away the rest plan.

      • +2

Yeah, but which one? Isn't there 3 different ones?

      • No, what Netflix plan. There are 3 tiers.

        • +4

You get the second tier plan ($11.99 per month one).

        • @iceshadow:
For anyone wondering, you don't actually get the plan, just the credit onto your account.

If you wanted to signup for the $9 a month plan, you would get 4 months free.

  • +1

DON'T underestimate the ZTE F286. I'd use one over any bottom-end Samsung's! It's a good basic phone. Does the job. I've had both.

    • +7

I'd use anything over any Samsung.

    • +2

Personally I prefer Sorbent for bottom-end jobs. Samsung quality is still not good enough…

      • I currently using an old Sammy note 1 as a MiFi modem on $2 days It works pretty well.

  • +1

Will this work if we have already set up an Netflix AU account or will it only work for new to Netflix customers?

    • +1

I am sure it works for existing (AU) accounts, as many others in the Optus thread stated it working for them.

    • You don't actually get the netflix plan, just a code for the credit to be added to any new or existing account.

If you wanted to signup for the $9 a month plan, you would get 4 months free (because they give you $36 credit, equalling 3x months @ $12)

  • +1

For those asking this is the second tier 'Standard' plan (has 2 simultaneous devices and totals $71.94 for 6 months). Full specs here: https://www.netflix.com/getstarted?locale=en-AU

  • Confused… so is it 6 months or 3?

    • +3

      3 months for pre-paid.

      6 months for post-paid & fixed broadband.

  • +6

It will NEVER beat Nokia 3210!

    • +2

I think they will be unearthing those in a couple of thousand years

      • +23

…and they will still have 70% battery charge.

  • +4

According to the FAQ's you can load more than one Netflix voucher onto your account:

Can I use more than one Netflix voucher per Netflix account?
Yes! You can use multiple Optus Netflix vouchers on the same Netflix account; they do not override each other.

    • +6

Well that raises the question how many phones will Coles sell to a single person?

      • +5

Or how many you can buy before getting put on a list at ASIS.

      • +1

I was there, they only let me get 4.

        • I answered my own question in the comments below, the Coles I went to had them on a display near the self serve checkout, unguarded like any other product they sell. I did explicitly ask the staff there and was told I could take as many I want. I took 6 at the time. Do plain to get some more. Having said all that, so far I have only activated one of them.

      • A post on page 2 says redeemed credit expires 30Sept.

The closest I could find in the terms is "All the voucher codes will expire at midday on September 30, 2015."

  • Do I need to put money inside the SIM card before I can activate it?

    • +57

Yes but you have to fold it up really, REaLLY tiny.

    • +1

There r different plans, i just got one and chose the $1 per day one. Here is whats in the critical information summary.
"The $1 Daily Level is charged on the first outbound standard national call, SMS, MMS, Voicemail or data use each day after 12:00am
      (local time)."
So i take it as i dont have to spend any money if i dont use it at all.

    • 1c coin will fit in the slot if you can find one.

  • Bring an ID when you buy it
Coles just asked me for one when I bought it

    • +1

Yeah it's hit and miss, sometimes they want it other times they don't, I tend to go when they're busy so they don't

  • +3

If only there was something like this for Spotify :(

    • +9

Time for a few of us to split a family plan? I get the Malaysian subscription. 5 people is 45MYR = ~$16, not exactly same songs as Oz but you get some extras and miss some…

      https://www.spotify.com/my-en/family/

  • Brilliant, thanks OP :D

  • +4

If you can't find one in Coles you may still find stock at some OW stores for the same price or there is still the $15 USB modem

  • Doesn't really matter for the price, but any idea if this would be cheap to unlock?

    • +1

$80 - not worth it at all.
      optus.com.au/unlock

      • crikey!

    • Bagman might be able to do it or otherwise codes on eBay were under $4.

      • I got mine unlocked from ebay for under $4. They were quick.

        • would you be able to link it to me I cant seem to find it!

    • +2

      3.82 from UK

I might reccomend it for someone who have a dual SIM like mine -AMAYSIM-. I used their reference to get addtional 20$ from 10$ payment. It's not legit & I know it's a wrong thing to utilize the amaysim generous offer . It's kinda sneaky like pearl harbour / Darwin Bombing, But you will get the BEST VALUE!!

  • +2

Netflix Australia blows. Signed up, couldn't find a single Star Trek series or movie. So much for all the hype about a service that can replace your physical media. lol.

    • +5

Getflix (or equivalent) is the way to go :) I think they still have 14 day free trial (without CC details)

    • +5

Give them time to let current licensing deals expire, in the meantime its easy enough to use a vpn or getflix etc to let you simply switch to the US netflix

      • +4

I agree. We have been using Netflix with getflix for a while now. Being able to jump to the UK, US & Canadian Netflix libraries gives us access to a huge amount of shows. Its gotten to the point that we only watch Netflix.

If you are just looking for Star Trek you are going to have a bad time. Keep your options open and there are so many amazing shows on it. Even the Aussie version of Netflix has house of cards and orange is the new black.

Netflix is a foxtel killer when they get more licensing deals. If they don't, foxtel will still have to pick its game up as currently we are being over charged for a very poor product IMO. And don't get me started on normal free TV.

        • +1

How do we do this getflix thingy?

        • +3

I think this is the key to enjoying Netflix - don't necessarily go into it looking for something specific. Your best bet is to browse through it and find something you like, or have never heard of but just might like.

        • +3

          @ajc99:
If you're only using netflix and not other streaming services, i suggest uflix. $20/yr or $2/month. I believe it's a lot cheaper than getflix and I use it, works amazingly well.

You also get a 14 day free trial without having to put in any credit card details or anything.

        • @ajc99:

Get their Free 14 day trial.

          Supported Devices/Channels

Don't forget to like them on facebook to get a 15% discount.

Once you created an account with them, they register your IP address and you will be given a DNS address which you can use in your PC, TV (smart)…etc or you can change the DNS on your Router.

If you change the DNS of your router to use that of GetFlix, all your devices connected to the router can use Netflix, iPlayer, Hulu..etc without having to configure each device.

Another useful guide to setup Chromecast to use Netflix, iPlayer…etc.

          How it works

        • i use uflix with my PS3. Works flawlessly.

        • @Gavman: I've never used uflix. They an Aussie company? Only reason I started with getflix is cause they are based here.

        • Seems like they are: uFlix Pty Ltd - Suite 3, Level 8, 179 Queen Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 3000 | ACN: 601214242

I signed up with them cos i only use Netflix and it cost like $2 a month with no commitments with is like half the price of getflix (I know some people signed up with special deals and have a cheaper subscription but no longer valid)

        • Just remember that if your ISP has unmetered Netflix (iinet, Internode, Optus etc), this only applies to the Australian Netflix CDN.

Using uFlix, GetFlix etc to access overseas Netflix will count as a normal download.

    • If you are just looking for Star Trek on a streaming service, try out Stan. They have all of the original series and TNG, both in HD supposedly. Don't think they have any movies though.

    • There's plenty of other stuff on there that's really good. But good for you for not doing any due diligence.

  • so if i buy 10 ZTE286 optus phones from coles and activate them all, will get like 30months on netflix?
how long once activated the optus service i will get the netflix code

    • -3

      Obviously not.
Each 3 month trial requires a separate credit card.
Trial would need to be started before the promotion finishes.

    • +6

Sure! I've stacked two codes on my account so far. :)

      • Thanks for this comment! (there may be a limit of 3, but we shall see!)

      • So hang on.. you buy 2 phones and activate both to get 2 codes. Then add both codes to same Netflix account and get 6 months access??? Does this actually work

      • +1

Just wondering, to get two codes, did you activate two prepaid phones under the same name or different. It looks like we worked out Netflix will accept multiple codes, but will optus give multiple codes to a person who activate a few mobiles under his name?

        • Yes, I activated both services under my own name. :)

    • You get the code within 2 weeks (in my experience, 1)

You also have 2 weeks to activate the code, but there is no limit (from what i've read on optus website) to how many you can add at once.

      • Do you mean two weeks to follow the link and get the netflix code? Rather than actually entering the code into netflix?

        • That's a good question.. I thought it was 2 weeks to enter the code but now i'm not sure

        • +2

          @Benjamin7711:

          http://www.optus.com.au/shop/promotions/netflix-subscription…

Activate optus service between 24 March and 5 July 2015

You'll receive your Optus email/SMS/letter within 14 calendar days of activating your service.

Once you receive your email/SMS/letter from us, you'll have 14 calendar days to claim your voucher online.

You'll need to activate this voucher with Netflix before midday 30 September 2015.

Once you receive your Netflix bonus offer from us, visit the Optus voucher claim page using the link provided to get your voucher code and then follow the link to www.netflix.com/specialoffer to create your Netflix account and redeem your voucher.

    • On the Optus website it says voucher expire Sep 30. And I confirmed this with online rep that all the credit from Optus ties after Sep 30

  • Got one, thanks OP :)

  • I think the phone itself at this price is fantastic plus the bonus netflIx subscription. The phone has a fm tuner and Bluetooth. Could just be worth it getting it as an fm tuner :)
