TeleChoice Sim Only Plan $28/Month: $650 Calls (Inc Int Calls), Unlimited SMS, 2GB Data (Telstra 3G Network)

550

I know this isn't a new deal, but TeleChoice are releasing new plans from the start of May. From then the current plans will not be available. Which definitely makes these prices a bargain, especially since the princes haven't been adjusted since the start of 2013.

I'm happy with the 12 month plan as that at least locks the price and allocations in for the year and their tends to be a downward trend in allocations in pond along with an increase in prices (Aldi, Vaya, live connected, etc). My friends have grandfathered Woolworths plans and LC pons that have their price locked it, so it's not necessarily a bad thing at all.

Plan includes unlimited SMS, $650 calls (about 550 min of calls, includes international calls in cap) free TC to TC calls and 2GB data with KB billing.

I was on Optus 4G for the last few years and decided to test out Telstra 3G via a lyca sim for the pay month. Data is much faster and coverage is a whole lot better too. Obviously that's just in my case, but definitely better here.

The only caveat is that you need to pay 55c to send an mms. Unlike Lyca you can receive them, which is better than nothing. Obviously you can still send MMS vi iMessage, whatsapp, etc without any fees.

The closest Telstra based plans are:

Lyca mobile $29.90 unlimited calls/sms 2GB data. Though their prices fluctuate. Can't send receive MMS messages. Don't allow data tethering
Aldi Mobile $35 1265min calls 2200 sms 2gb data
Boost $40 unlimited calls, text 3GB data (bonus 1GB on Sunday)

Anyway, hope that helps someone :)

The plans could get better in May.

    • that's a good news

      • I have no idea if they will get better. It's more likely that they won't as they wouldn't announce the new plans.

      • +8

        that's a good news

        Is this Mario or Luigi?

    • Why?

  • Telechoice allow you to choose a plan that is of the same/more than your current plan which will apply to the new plans too according to them. Also, after 6 months you can go down a plan too.

Regarding the allowance possibly going up, I don't see that trend for the MVMOs so I've just signed up.

I was locked into a 24 month Live Connected price which was awesome and the cost was way below what the rest of the market were offering.

Thanks for the heads up that the plans are finishing in May. I just finished my 12 month contract this week on the $28 plan. So happy to have a mobile bill under $30 a month

    • +1

No worries. Below $30 is ideal hey. I just signed up before posting. You're obviously happy with it which is cool

      • My wife's been on that plan since middle of last year, I've been on it since beginning of this year, and my half my in-laws have gotten on it as well. The only issue that anyone has had is the cost for sending an MMS - someone was inadvertently sending MMS by including emoticons in texts. I think it's the best deal for the price.

  • +1

Telechoice is really better compared to Vaya coverage wise. Though it runs on 3G but Telstra coverage compensate the slower speed. I just signed up last week on 24 months plan with one month free offer from local dealer.

    • +1

did they let you join the 'Kogan' plans in store?

      • -1

        No, that's online exclusive.

      • I signed up for the Kogan plan in store, I just showed them the webpage on my phone and they let me sign up on the spot.

  • +4

I moved to telechoice after the whole vaya incident…
paying $25 for the above plan (though only has 1.5gb data) on a 12 month contract.

my telechoice 3g internet (inside) is faster then my vaya 4g internet (outside).

    • +3

I did the same, except my 3g internet is around 7 times slower than my 4g vaya

      • Exactly

  • +1

international calls included ! very good deal . I am on TPG old plan with 500 credit and 1G of data for 20$ pm on optus network . I think I ma gotta move to Telechoice :D !

    • +3

Jut be aware international txts are not, not such an issue if everyone you know uses whatsapp, imessage, etc.

    • Thanks. I addedit to the description.

    • I am on the same TPG plan. TPG will charge some fees to get out of their service. I think it was $11.

      • +2

make sure you fight to get back the $20 deposit and leave them before they charge the monthly fee in advance (6 / 7 days before your billing month?)

    • just keep in mind that the international call rates fall under the "Global Rate Plan" rates which are quite expensive compared to TPG's

  • does anyone know what the new plays will be like. I'm thinking of getting the rebel starter plan for 12 months @ $15.50. Reckon it'll get cheaper or more expensive?

  • Hey guys just wondering how does this deal compare to virgin (4g) in terms of coverage, speed and customer service?

I'm currently on the old virgin 29 plan with 2.25gb data.

Dont mind saving $1 for 250mb less of data if for better speed and coverage ;)

    • i will definitely stay with virgin, unless you have nothing better to do (ie. you have too much crap to talk to your friends…. remember iinet's commercial?? those old aussie women??)

i am with virgin too on their $20 plan with 1.2gb data.

    • Doesn't Virgin rollover unused credits to the next billing month? Definitely stay with Virgin.

    • +1

Coverage of nextG network will be better, but if you've never had a coverage problem then it might not be worth it. I can't get reliable Optus or VHA at my home - so it's Telstra only.

      • The 3G coverage you get from Telstra MVNOs with the exception of Boost is less than that you get from Telstra. It is designed to give about the same population coverage as Optus.

  • -2

I was on Vodafone's $50 red with 50% off for six months. After it expired they offered me the $45 plan for $30 - includes $700 value, 1.5gb data, unlimited sms Nat and Int, overseas call rate is $2.33 for International calls, might work out better depending on where you want to call

    • is that offer available to everyone? Probably not.

    • +5

      "includes $700 value"

Amazing value there although it's divorced from everything so it's just an arbitary meaningless number. Somehow all this value is bought for $30 so clearly that's amazing value.

  • What I'm after is 1.5gb data, unlimited (regular MMS) and Telstra network for $20 a month …… I'm kinda kidding myself :/ I know telechoice will do it for me, for $25 - but it's 3G only.

Does boost have anything similar? Apparently the 4G "trick" is still working (swap your SIM at a telstra shop or some such and they accidently burn you an LTE SIM?)

    • That's what I was after initially but it's not happening. For the extra $3 I was happy with the extra 500mb on the $28 plan

Seems boost only go 1gb and 3gb. Prob deliberately trying to get people to get bigger option

      • Yeah I agree, I think I'm just gonna have to stick with it for the time being. I have a mental barrier about exceeding $20 a month. I barely use my phone compared to most.
I will say the call rates are presumably half decent on Telechoice, I do make more calls than I ever used to (3 hours outbound a month?) and never exceed the $20

      • Boost recently modified the $20 and $40 recharges to include extra data Sundays only: 500MB for the $20 recharge and 1GB for the $40 recharge.

For my usage that is probably better than 1.5GB per month.

    • Can you please elaborate on the Boost 4G trick?

  • I'm on boost and pay $40 each month wife on amaysim flex for just under $20, I went with boost as needed better coverage when away to work and sim was half price, wife does not really use or have use for $40 boost like I have so was wondering is this in par with boost etc as in coverage?or is this better but are you tied into 12 months contracts etc with this not had a look yet but always looking for something cheaper and better.

    • +2

Boost is the only Telstra MVNO (because it is Telstra) to have access to the whole NextG foot print.
The others have coverage restricted to one that has the same approximate population reach as Optus but not necessarily the same areas. As always choose the carrier that has the best reception/speeds in the areas where you work live and play. None of the Telstra MVNOs including Boost currently has 4G that's essential in some areas. amaysim have 4G now which is probably even more important with Optus.

      • Also Boost has the maximum NextG 3G speeds the same as Telstra, where Aldi and others are throttled in some areas. That used to be the case last year anyway.

        • The throttling was removed last year. Pop coverage also received a 0.5% bump to 98.5%.

        • @Stingo:

What carrier are you refering to? Telechoice, or now all Telstra MVNO's?

        • All Telstra MVNOs. They are generally interchangeable in performance except for Boost which has more coverage and Lycamobile which is operating here in roaming mode and was, and may still for all I know, routing their data through the UK.Their SIMs also can't be used in a phone locked to Telstra if SIMs from the other MVNOs can be used - some Telstra phone will only accept SIMs within a certain ICC ID? range.

        • @Stingo:

Thanks for the info. I was aware of most of what you mentioned, as some of these things are also changing and evolving as time goes on. I looked into the whole Boost V other Telstra MVNO's last year because I live in a regional/rural area and wanted the fastest spped possible on the Telstra 3G/NextG network that my HSPA/+ phone could process. I also had an Aldi sim and compared internet speed checks and Boost used to be the fastest same as Telstra 3G NextG. Aldi and then Kogan also were both slower. Maybe things have changed now.

  • +2

I moved to the $20 plan from amaysim, and my partner to the $25 from vaya, and we are both pleased.
Thanks for the heads up on the May change, I will probably move some more family over.

  • +1

I just swapped to Jeenee from the $20 plan because I rang up telechoice asking to go to the $25 plan without extending my contract and they refused. My jeenee plan is month to month which I like as it allows me to follow value increases.

    Jeenee - http://www.jeenee.org.au/

Plus the rates are slightly cheaper than KM rates.

    • Jeenee's $25 plan seems reasonable value but I don't know how they got that award for the $35 plan considering you can get the same data but with unlimited text/call for $5 more from Boost and be on the Telstra network rather than Optus.

    • Did anyone else say Jeenee like Forest Gump?

  • +1

Jeenee seems to be on Optus though

  • KB or MB charging for data?

  • Given T- Wholesale 3G overlap, not beat, Optus' 98 % footprint coverage. I believe prepaid-Vodafone cap40 would meet some 97/98ths of T's forecast deal (2GB, per kb) and minutes (681 > 600 here). Mind you T's eagerness here is good.

I'll easily average ~ 30 dollars recharging cap40 through Woolworths (specials). Then I see 4G LTE sweetening VF's deal. MMS, video call and international minutes included.

But did you know Voda give 2/7th of the month away free? "Unlimited weekends" is the thing that moved Boost to bonus Sunday 1GB, and remembering T/C won't get you nextG.

    • I'll easily average ~ 30 dollars recharging cap40 through Woolworths (specials).

The recharge special is usually 15% and sometimes 20% so how do you manage ~$30?

      • +1

I simply ran 7.5% e-gift card through woolies self-checkout last time during special = 31.45. Coles have had $30 clear- nothing further required.
Unlimited $50 I think has been 40 now for weeks, Woolies down to 32.40 if purchased from $81 Groupon\Wow giftcard that I was fortunate to get. While I have several on hand, I expect in the next promo mine will = 28 dollars cap 40 .81*.85.

    • Why is info on any alternative down voted here — especially since they are available to everyone ??

    From Whirlpool (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2369038) :

Following are the new plans that TC is coming out with:

    Live Global 19 –24M / Live Starter 25 –M2M
    Live Global 29 –24M / Live Starter 30 –M2M
    Live Global 35 –24M / Live Starter 35 –M2M
    Live Global 39 –24M / Live Starter 45 –M2M
    Live Global 49 –24M / Live Starter 55 –M2M

My guess and from discussion on whirlpool, i don't that those new plan will be any better than current one…

    • Wow. These don't look good according to the replies on WP

  • -1

Both lebara and lyca have $29 for unlimited calls and 2 gigs so this is not a value at all.

    • +3

Lebara on voda so this deal is good for people who does not like voda.
Lyca does not have international call included where as this deal has it plus lyca customer services is worst…

      Hope this helps.

  • I moved to Telechoice about 3 months ago

The connection randomly drops out at major spots at all major Melbourne train stations then takes like 30s to reconnect
Tested in multiple handsets, same issue. Then when I tried another provider (vodafone and optus) works fine without the long re-connect (ruling out handset issue)

Not the best but good price, I'd personally look elsewhere

    • The problems should affect all Telstra 3G users. I understand the Telstra CBD is quite congested on Telstra 3G so you really need 4G.

    • So anyone done a test to see if the boost prepaid $20 plan 3g only at same location as Telechoice plans are better or the same in terms of reception???

      • Yes, it's identical in many of the rural places I go (places with no optus reception whatsoever..)

    • Yea - I have the same with Telechoice in Sydney.

  • +2

According to the above new plan links supplied above the new plans are going to be far worse. On top of that, 1gb data ocky will cost $15 each which seems to be 50% more than the other telcos. See here http://www.telechoice.com.au/help/faqs/live-plans/data-packs…

  • the only shame is the international sms still not included..but i could live with that I suppose..

    • +1

      Whatsapp, bro.

      • yea i know..but my boss still do SMS all the time on the go while on international business..

  • Yea, this seems to be a good plan.

What TC is offering for $20 is what I am getting from Voda for $35 ($500 and 1 Gig). Although, TC's international calls are a bit dearer. But If I take a $25 TC plan to get $650 value (which will hopefully cover up for that dearer international calls), that still saves me $10/Month and gives me 1.5 GB data. Am counting on network improvement too irrespective of better value, so hope TC doesn't disappoint (as its a 12 month plan vs month to month on voda)

Thinking positively to change to TC.

  • My wife is coming off a Telstra 24mth contract. I was going to put her on Telstra prepaid Freedom plan for $40/month = 1.5BGB (+500MB bonus, so 2GB), $550 calls. The TC $28/month is 2GB and $650 so it is $12/month cheaper for basically the same deal. Am I right though that TC is limited to 3G whereas the Telsra prepaid Freedom plan is 4G/3G? thanks

    • You are right. TC is not complete Telstra coverage Plus TC does not have 4G.

      • Is it still better than Voda and Optus networks?

        • +1

Its depends on individuals and their locations.
For me Optus was worst but Voda and Telstra is good so i m with TC.

Few people like optus more than Telstra. But my understanding is that telstra has overall better coverage than optus or Voda. But it does not mean that TC have access to complete telstra network.

          Hope it helps.

When everything goes up at a massive rate except the salary, it's so good to hear something that stays with the income so that you can afford to have it tomorrow :)

Health insurance, car rego, council rates, electricity, water, gas, fees for kids classes all went up by 10% every year for last 7-8 years and still managed to keep the pace. Only thing stays almost at the same spot is income. Telecom is an area that should improve in quality and price should go down over the time as it has happened everywhere else in the world as well.

  • This plan with up to $2000 international calls is good if you make a lot of overseas phone calls http://www.telechoice.com.au/plans/live-global-39

  • I was about to sign up with them, but googled productreview to get user's experience with it. I think I'll stick with my present company for a while yet.

  • New plans are pretty much the same as the old:
    http://www.telechoice.com.au/plans/telechoice-sim-plan

Just more options at different price points but the $20, $25 and $30 plans are the same.

  • +1

Well to all the skeptical people- I've been with Telstra, Aldi, Boost, Kogan, Virgin & Optus. Every time a company changed their terms and conditions on their unlimited plans I found a new provider. I've been with TC for almost a year. I never get near the $650 credit on the $28 Kogan plan. Now I've put Mum & Dad on the $20 plan. We get free calls to each other. Now we're all on the same network I've never used half my credit. The most outstanding thing TC does that none of the other telcos do is the system that emails & texts you when you have used half your allowances. Outstanding service!! I live in Darwin. The service is great. To gave a hand full of calls drop out for $28 a month. Really who cares!!!!!!
