Moto G 2nd Gen $ 249 at The Good Guys. I know they had it for cheaper at the Ebay sale, but you can get Officeworks to price match it probably.

this is expensive for a 3rd gen

    oh its 2nd gen… erghhh

  • Not as good as a deal, last time was $220 with instore credit as well.

    • -1

The last time the AUD was 1 buck US. I doubt we will be that good a price any time soon.

  • +3

The 3rd gen is coming soon but apparently it's not much of an upgrade. It will have 4G Lte, SD card slot and a 2390 mah battery (improvement over the old 2070mah), but same old same old 1GB RAM and Snapdragon 400 processor.

    • -1

yeah i wonder when its coming out? any day now…

    • +3

1GB after 3 revisions is plain stupid.

      • Why? It's a midrange phone, not a top of the line premium one.

        • -1

1GB is low end, not midrange.

        • @PainToad:

Dunno bout that.. Try going back to a phone with 512mb.

I think it's fair to say 1GB is mid range.

        • Considering the price, it wouldn't hurt for them to include an extra 512MB or something.

I mean even the budget Zenfone 5 manages to have 2GB of RAM and 16GB of ROM, while costing just over $230 USD.

ASUS has redefined midrange with Zenfone lineup, if you can get a 720p 5" phone with 2GB RAM, 16GB storage and possibly even 4G LTE for less than $300, that's pretty good value, for a device with a decent brand behind it.

        • @scrimshaw:

Well, technically this is a US$179.99 phone..

        • Well, here's the new Zenfone 2 pricing according to a Reddit user
          http://www.reddit.com/r/zenfone2/comments/2wu6ma/updated_zen…

I can definitely see the USD $199 Zenfone being far more attractive in terms of specs and value for the average consumer. Apart from the lack of a second SIM slot, the $199 Zenfone 2 beats the $180 Moto G 8GB in almost every aspect.

To sum things up, this is the hypothetical price (quoted in USD).

          $199 = 5" 720p, 2GB RAM, 16GB ROM Intel 1.6ghz Quad core, 2500mah, LTE, Expandable storage

          £140 pounds (let's assume $200 USD) = 5" 720p", 1GB RAM, 8GB ROM, Qualcomm 1.3ghz Quad core, 2330mah, LTE, Expandable storage

    • +1

Second gen with LTE is coming soon with the specs you mention.
      http://www.cnet.com/au/products/motorola-moto-g-2015/
      Out in the UK already.

Third gen (3G only again?) is likely towards the end of the year.

    • Any idea when?

  • There is also a new moto g coming later in the year.

This has been selling in cotsco for $230 for while now. Great phone.. I run almost all apps, 1 GB is plenty for these phones. Sammy and other phones requires more RAM as they uses their own stupid unnecessary apps running on the back ground. Moto G2 does not have all those apps running in the back ground apart from google services. This is pure android exp.

    • You are correct, I just move from S3 to this phone and I couldn't be any happier. It runs Lollypop 5.0.2 soon to get 5.1. Got no bloat ware like Samsung's crap running in the background draining the battery. Cheap phone so you can throw it away after a year and move onto another.

    This or 5x y550s… Hmmmmmmmmm

    • well, if u r after price->feature ratio, Y550. And, if after a specific brand, Moto G2. Y550 has a small problem with the internal storage - just 4 GB. If you know how to root, move to SD, its not a problem. I am really impressed with its battery performance. In addition to the normal using of calling, chatting and browsing with data and BT, Auto brightness on , i put it to testing by just keeping the GPS and navigation on for around 1-1.5 hours continuously. Even then I got around 36 hours before battery went down.

Choice is yours mate :) I still remember those days we had only Nokia Brick model as the mobile but oh..god it was as solid as brick.

    • +4

The Y550 has a major flaw too, the camera is pretty terrible and the screen is quite reflective.

On the upside, it has 4G, but eschews a secondary sim slot.

      • eschews

+1 for using that in a sentence

  • DSE managed to come in cheapest during the ebay sale at $192. Still even at normal price I reckon you're getting a pretty decent phone for the money.

  • OK price, not the best but OK.

Compared to the y550, this phone doesn't really tick that many boxes. Y550 has a newer processor, better battery life and 4G.

Unless the stock Android Lollipop experience is crucially important to you, I'd get the Y550 and keep the rest in my pocket.

  • +2

Y550 and Moto G2 has its own advantages and disadvanstages. its depends on what you weigh on.
y550 has a 4.5 inch screen compared to 5 inch of G2. also the pixel density is much higher in G2. its 298 ppi in G2 compared to 218 in y550.

Camera is much better than y550. Plus lollipop is a huge advantage. I know some of you will contradict. however for me its a plus as i used both.

The 4GB RAM means you can not literally use the phone much unless you root it. it can be used for basic stuffs. or you need to keep clearing your data every now and then. The phone will get slow after a period of time if you didnt do this.

Moto G2 according to me worth its extra dollars..

    • comparison is meh anyway

i have the 3rd gen Motorola G and its a fine mid range phone

it has its faults like the abysmal camera but otherwise most of it is good, the 720p screen is of very good quality

the y550 has its place and I would buy one for $50 just to compare but the screen is rather ehhh. and you get the usual huawei issues

      • Moto G3 you mean? how did you get that? ithink not released yet..

      • +1

I am using this Moto G (2nd generation) from the previous good guys deal and price matched it with officeworks.
It is an excellent phone for the price of $238 with 1 year manufacturer warranty plus paid extra for additional 2 years replacement warranty. This is an upgrade for me as I was using the previous generation Moto G with 4.5" screen. The screen on the 1st generation is better than the 2nd generation, but I wanted a bigger screen.

I just found a problem with the bluetooth this week while accepting a call in my car. It is not smooth, meaning it crackles and I can only hear bits and pieces of the conversation through the car speakers. I soon realised that if I place the phone further away from my radio receiver the quality of the sound is perfect. Not sure if this is a defect on my phone as I have never had this happen with other phones.

I also went and bought some Huawei Y550 for my family. This Y550 is a bargain at $40 from Harvey Norman this week. It also comes with a Vodafone sim with some credit. I got it unlocked for approx AUD$2.50 from a guy in the UK and it was done within 10mins. The quality of the screen is Ok but not as good as the Moto G (2nd gen) but the Y550 is a 4G network phone where the Moto G is still only 3G. The camera on the Y550 is not the best compared to the Moto G. For a $40 hand phone, I can not complain about it. The build quality of this Huawei is very good. • I have kept an eye on this phone for a while, and based on my observations (and poor memory), this is the normal price.

  • -1

Last deal was $219 plus $20 store credit, which brought it down to $199 actually. This deal is therefore $50 or 25% more expensive.

  • If you think this is a good deal, you'll be sad you missed this deal then as it had $50 Store Credit on top plus a Chromecast.
