Optus: Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge 32GB Preorder $85 P/M Unlimited Calls 6GB Data

900

Currently you can preorder the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge 32GB through Optus for $85pm on a 24 month plan which includes unlimited calls/text, 6gb data and up to 300 mins of international calls to selected countries. Currently the s6 edge 32GB has a RRP of $1149 so on this plan the handset works out to be $600! ($60pm on a SIM only plan so handset is $25 pm). I think its a nice saving for someone looking to purchase the S6 Edge on a plan.
Phone is available from April 10.

good deal for the price. downside is optus reception

    • +1

Just checked, VF deals are very similar. Probably not much chance of Telstra cutting us a deal!
edit: Ha, unlimited talk and 4GB is $134 p/m with Telstra!

      • +6

buy the phone outright and go with aldi or someone else who does prepaid on telstra 3g

thats what ive done for the last 2 years. its so much better.

      • +2

        on Telstra's Samsung S6 plan, L, $95/month for 64GB phone, $950 calls, unlimited texts, 6GB DATA :)

        • +1

Also unlimited weekend and nights calling.

        • @astrodude:

And the best Network in Australia :)

        • That's not the Edge that is advertised here! Also not unlimited calls as advertised here!
Can you post the link to that Telstra offer. Telstra's site is only showing up to 3GB (XL) plan @ $138 now!

edit: I have no idea where you're seeing 6GB on the Telstra plan? Even for just the basic S6 Telstra's site is coming up as $99 for the 64GB with 2.5GB of data + a bonus 1GB or $1000 worth of calls/MMS!

        • @Snoop:

There is a promotion running. L plans get an extra 3.5GB making it 6GB and XL Plans get an extra 6.5GB making it 10GB.

Little bit more pricey than Optus, but from my experience, well worth it. Telstra offer the best quality service/product.

        • @snagseb:
Cool, I'll look into that. I've been with VF for so long because Telstra's plans have never come close on value for money!
I had a business phone on Telstra for about 9 years, so I know their service reception is heaps better and data speeds were always quicker!

        • +1

@snagseb: On April 9th, the new quota will become standard. 6GB on L, 10GB on XL.

          http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2015/03/telstras-new-data-enhan…

    • YOu must live in the country. I live in Sydney and the optus 4g speeds and reception is amazing. Bl2u. Don't hate on Optus, it's your fault for living in the middle of no where.

      • i live and work in Sydney. Not sure if you've tried telstra internet, but I recently changed and I definitely feel the difference. I can never get a drop of internet when i'm on my train from Strathfield to townhall.

      • You obviously have never been on Telstra if Optus 4G is something you consider amazing.

        • The difference is minimal. My work phone is on a Telstra Business PLan and the speeds for both Optus 4G PLus and Telstra 4G are off the charts, so OPtus is the winner compared to the rip off Telstra plans.

        • +1

          @tendollar:

I agree Telstra are a bit of a rip off, but a speedtest from one location doesn't represent much. From my experience, Telstra is consistently showing better data speeds and mobile reception.

And the new Telstra plans coming into effect in a few days are(finally) reasonable.

  • +4

Also $10 discount if you have Optus broadband at home

    edit: $10 discount, every month!

    • +1

Oh yeah, Optus $10 discounts… that keep disappearing from your account every so often until you call them up to fix it!!!

  • +2

That's a decent deal. +1 for the detailed post showing the prices.

  • +1

if you don't need 6GB data you could go on the cheaper $75pm which gives 1GB of data.

    • Except that the phone is 4G+ compatible, so you'll chew up 1GB of data in no time (that is unless you monitor your internet usage on your superfast phone like a hawk.)

      • Yeah, 4G(+ doesn't really mean much in terms of speed) makes smaller data amounts just too small unless you're really careful. Almost anything that adapts quality to speed is gonna pick something really nice and chew through a lot very fast.

      • I have the Note 4 from Optus with 1.5GB/month. I haven't gone near using that amount and I use my phone quite often. 1GB is more than enough for most people who don't spend their life staring at their phone.

        • +1

Tend to disagree there, you can watch a single 5 minute video clip on YT at the wrong resolution and chew through half a gig quite easily.

      • I dont think a hawk is fast enough.

I have a note 2 on 4g and I have burnt through my allotted 7gb in less then a month.

I did test download speeda by downloading a 700mb file which was quick. But yeh apart from that it was surfing web and fb plus you tube.

  • +1

    $97pm for 128GB version

  • +1

You can also get the standard Galaxy S6 in 64GB for $81 per month with 3GB data which is also a pretty good deal.

    • +2

$4 more per month for an extra 3GB of mobile data is well worth it

      • +3

Not if you don't use it.

        • +1

piggy back a $5 once off sim to share the data with your tablet…
Thats what im thinking of doing…

  • +1

free netflix subscription for 6 months? does that mean i can watch netflix on the phone? that will chew through the data? unless they have unlimited?

    • +1

No, you only get the subscription, the data will still be metered.

      • Unmetered in a few weeks i believe

        • +2

Unmetered is only from your home broadband. Content accessed via mobile will definitely still be metered.

        • +1

          @Lions44:

          Ahhh misread the question thanks!

        • @Lions44:

I thought that was only with Presto - Since Telstra own part of it through Foxtel etc.

Didn't see anything about unmetered Nextlix, I would love that, do you have any more details?

        • @snagseb:

Hey mate take a look in this page for more information.

          http://www.optus.com.au/shop/promotions/netflix-subscription…

It will be unmetered on Optus home broadband from the 17th of April :).

  • This can be down to $75 if you have a current home phone / Broadband.

Edit : Ben already got this covered :)

  • :S after I just signed up for the HTC One M9.

    • IMO a terrible choice, 1" of bezel is far too much for me

      • +9

non-expandable storage is far too much for me

        • +1

yep, that kills my intention to get the s6,just hope samsung wont make the same mistake to note 5

        • @AllWins:

Or bring out the S6 Active…

      • +2

I can live with the bezel.

I can also live without expandable storage, my Nexus 4 has taught me all…

But not the m9's camera. On Phone Arena, they did a blind test, and the m9 had the worst photos among the current flagships, and even worse than last year's Galaxy s5…

        http://www.phonearena.com/news/Nokia-Lumia-930-wins-our-blin…

  • +1

And remember if/when choosing a model… The new Galaxy does not have an external memory slot! I'll be going for minimum 64GB. Probably pay the extra for 128GB just in case!

    • +1

128gb is a huge amount of data, most users would be satisfied with 32gb

      • +1

I've 16 gigs on my Nexus, and I'm a happy camper.

I'm pretty sure 16 gigs is enough for most people… It should be. Back up your photos and videos once a month…

32gigs is more than enough for me.

      • Not when there's apps out there nowadays taking over a Gig each! Add to that HD video, quality music, 16Mp photos… won't get you as far as you think!

      • agreed, i dont store or watch movies on my phone, I have the ipad for that. 32gb should be more than enough for capturing photos and video.

        • Just a single 2 minute video is over 250MB! Parents of toddlers/young kids would tear through that!

        • @Snoop: is that 4k video?

        • @striker5950:
          1920x1080 on a Samsung S4.

      • If you actually got 32Gb - you'll get around 23Gb usable.

    • +14

Don't buy it at all. Send Samsung a message.. the Apple method where extra memory is charged at over twice the price it should be is NOT ok.

      • THIS. And 32GB isn't enough for me. Photos, music, video - just isn't enough.

      • +3

Yep, the market is certainly sending Apple a message!

  • here are the plans at Virgin, but Optus seems to be better value:
    https://www.virginmobile.com.au/Shop/Galaxy-S6-32GB-WT

    • but that data rollover though…

  • Telstra pricing may be more competitive after April 9 as they are upping their quotas.

    • Hmm will the bump apply to all these preorders too?

  • +7

And another $100 off if you are a student
Bonus $100 visa card or $50 depending which plan you choose

  • +2

man phones are so expensive these days!

    • +1

Tell that to Ling who builds them. They aren't expensive enough for the technology we're getting, and it's undercutting the countries that assemble them.

      • thats why i rock a Moto G. you get lots of phone for little money

    • +3

The dollar is making it even worse, prices here are up a fair bit since last years launches.

    • +1

You can get a usable smart phone for $40, so they are extremely affordable, expensive if you want a pocket powerhouse

  • with my current dept on credit card i can only buy this in month of june or july :(

    • +3

      debt*

    • +3

If you have so much credit card debt maybe you should hold off on the expensive discretionary purchases altogether…

    • As intrinsic as OzB is to us as shoppers, I think a short leave of absence would do you wonders! ;)

  • Since it is being released on the 10th does that mean we will receive it on day? (posted on the 9th).

Best deal i've seen in a while.

  • +1

Does Optus still offer to pay out a competitors mobile contract early exit termination fee? I am with Telstra and might want to switch to Optus to get this deal.

    • +2

Not at the Momemnt Unless you have 6+ services.
Buy You never know what comes up for the month of April.

They might have some Acquisition offer from tomorrow.

      Thanks
      Rick

  • +1

Good to see the competition, Voda is selling S6 32G $86 per month yesterday, today is $83

  • someone said that i can get $10 off every month if i have optus broadband at home, the thing is the contract is not under my name and someone elses in the family, is that a problem?

    • Yes it is but guess it dont hurt to ring up and try

    • Go in store and find out

    • Yeah it is but if you go instore with the owners of the respective accounts they should be able to sort it out.

    • Your broadband service does not have to be under your name. As long as your broadband service's address, and your phone plan's billing address is the same, you are eligible.

Source: I got the deal even though our broadband service is under my dad's name.

      • alright thanx, which did you get the edge or normal one? colour? memory?

        • I got the M9, not S6 :P

  • cool, the plan does seem like better value in the long run compared to my telstra prepaid. optus really looks like the best option considering the $10 a month discount and $100 visa card. how much worse is optus reception and 4g speed compared to telstra?

    • This. I left Optus for Telstra prepaid a few years ago because the network was better. Wondering if the gap has narrowed in Sydney enough to jump back over. More data for less $$.

  • +1

Geez the plans of flagships are going up astronomically.

Its interesting how Samsung is following Apple's trend of creating different storage sizes and locking the design down.
Seems Samsung is trying a new direction, will be interesting to see whether it takes off.

I think this locking down of storage and sealing the battery is more like a step backwards then a step forwards.
It's one of the main differentiators between the operating systems, the point of difference between Android and IOS.

    • If the $$$ flows to Samsung I don't see this changing anytime soon.

  • +1

No expandable SD slot and no replaceable battery is a bit of a downer since these were reasons 1 and 2 why i was anti iphone. Hope the note doesnt get rid of these.

    • Dont forget they also removed the Waterproof capabilities.

  • -3

Wow 1k+ for a smart phone. I hope it comes with a super hot Korean model.

  • Tempting… very tempting… but with these new Telstra deals out, I might just stick with my Nexus 5 on a casual plan for another 6 months and see what happens. LG and Sony are still to come, plus another Nexus further down the line.

  • this is tempting .. Is it cheaper to just buy the phone outright? cause i have one pre orded for $825 or should I just get it on a plan is that cheaper?? its just a Samsung Galaxy S6 32GB model and i want the cheapest plan, I really need help I dont know much about plans only know it cost more over time but im not sure, if anyone could help please

    • Where did you pre-order from for 825?

    • As per the OP's description, the phone works out at a cost of $600 over 24 months. The plan is the equivalent of the $60 BYO plan, which means handset repayments are $25 per month. That's for the 64GB model.

So you'd only want to purchase outright if you don't want to be locked into a contract for 24 months - or you feel you can get better value on the plan side of things (i.e. something better for less than $35/month).

    • -1

      where did you preorder this?!?!

    • +5

Well the benefit of buying outright vs plan depends on what sort of calls/text/data combo you are after..

For example, if you bought the S6 32GB model for $825 that works out to be $35p/m over 24 months..

And if you just go for a cheap plan like Vaya $24 (which uses optus 4g) which gives you $650 of calls/text and 2GB of data.. so in total you would be paying $59 p/m over 24 months ($24 for plan + $35 for phone).. you would be better off with Vaya (the nearest equivalent plan with Optus is $76 pm)

But if you are after unlimited calls/text and more data, Optus would be better.. on the $44 Vaya plan (which has unlimited calls/text and 3GB data) you would be paying $79 pm ($44 for plan + $35 for phone).. Compared to Optus $80 p/m plan where you get double the data 6GB as compared to 3GB with Vaya..

      Hope that helps..

  • Hei guys, Samsung s6 or samsung s6 edge?

    • +1

ill just wait till their demo units are available in store so i can handle both and see for my self if the edge is worth the extra 120

    • +1

That's like asking us if you should order the still or sparkling water when you're at a restaurant!

      • I dont like sparkling water btw, but i think s6 edge is a bit sexy compare to normal s6.

        • +1

Then you have your answer my friend! ;)

    • +1

My friend has the Note Edge and he said it's a massive gimmick. After a month he stopped using the edge display and said the only reason people should buy it is if they appreciate the looks of their phone. I am someone who slaps a fat rubber case on my phone, so edge means little to me.

      • +1

That's probably why Samsung offers both.
