600 lumens? Cree Wiki says the Cree XPE Q5 is capable of up to 251 lumens. I'd say most likely with this torch the max is possibly 120~130 lumens if driven at 700 milliamps.

    • +16

Certainly makes one question the OP/rep's creedibility.

      (I'll let myself out..)

    • +1

May as well just say 100 billion lumens.

At least then everyone knows its a bulldust figure to be disregarded when weighing up the many pros and cons involved in the major decision making process of a $3 purchase.

  • BudgetLightForum.com review
    ".. I guess it’s somewhere around 150 lumens."

  • +16

+1 to the rep for blatantly lying about the torch specs and still managing to rake in a never ending tide of pos votes.

  • +1

Im yet to buy one these, Would these be the one to get do you think?

    • +2

I've got one of these. For the price they're really good. Use 1x AA battery and shine very bright (compared to a regular torch)

    • +6

Personally, I'm done with super-cheap torch deals from sites like Banggood. Quality control just isn't there - can't rely on them when you need them, which is generally the most important thing but too often forgotten in talk about brightness etc. Feels like I need to keep 2 or 3 together to match the dependability of one decent torch.

      • Do you have any recommendations on torches? I feel like I need to buy one just in case of blackouts, but I don't know which one is decent…

        • +2

Maglite have served me very well. I've had 4 in varying sizes for ~20 years now, and no failures, ever.

        • +1

@encoderboy: +1 for maglight, however my EDC torch is a Fenix LD02, I have yet to run across a better torch.
I picked it up at REI in the states but you can get them elsewhere http://www.rei.com/product/876834/fenix-ld02-edc-flashlight

        • +2

Stay away from Maglights IMO, they use LED technology that is way behind the current leader (Cree).

AznMitch, tell us your budget and preferred battery type (1xAA, 2xAA, 4xAA, 18650, etc), and I can recommend you some flashlights.

Thrunite and Olight have some great lights with uptodate emitters, and they can be gotten relatively cheaply compared to the premium USA manufacturers. You really what you pay for, to an extent. In most cases, a flashlight for $20 will be very inferior to one that is $50, in terms of user interface, build quality, and power efficiency. I don't bother with cheap ones anymore, they never get used.

This site has loads of reviews by a respected member of the flashaholic community: www.flashlightreviews.ca/recommend.htm

        • @transblur: "max 100 lumens"

        • @raven2000: Thanks, I will read the reviews later when I have the time to.

I don't really have a preference, but I think I'd want to get one that uses AA batteries (Bought AA Eneloops without realising everything I use uses AAAs). I personally need it for the blackouts so I think I wouldn't need something fancy. I just want something that's reliable and something that will last for ages.

          Thanks :)

        • @AznMitch: Fair enough. Since you want it for blackouts, you probably want something that can tailstand, and in the 2xAA or 4xAA form.

Since you probably have a ton of eneloops, I'd say just go the whole way and get a 4xAA. I recently bought the Thrunite TN4A http://www.thrunite.com/thrunite-tn4a-cw/ , and I'm loving it. It's the brightest 4xAA at this point.

If you want a 2xAA, I would recommend Olight S15, or Thrunite Neutron 2A v2. These can both be used in the 1xAA form, and you can put on an extender to use them as 2xAA (more brighter, longer runtime etc).

You'll be able to find reviews for all of them at http://www.flashlightreviews.ca/

          Good luck!

        • +1

          @raven2000:

          Stay away from Maglights IMO

          wot

are you high. 3D maglite I got from COTD about 2 years ago does not miss a beat, sure it might not have latest LED tech but can easily light up my neighbours house 350m away. i use it probably every night when i get home from work to feed my animals and would of only changed the batteries twice since i got it

        • @storyteller: Is this the one? https://www.catchoftheday.com.au/product/maglite-3d-led-flas…

It's advertised as having a "high brightness of 131 lumens". You can get 2xAA flashlights that output 350 lumens+. 4xAA flashlights can go over 1000 lumens.

You won't know the difference till you try a modern flashlight.

      • I got 8 of these last time they're on sale and all 8 are fine.

        • These and their kin (the sk68's) are certainly hit and miss in terms of performance and build quality. But like you I've never had one that didn't work. And even though I have several much more expensive much more powerful flashlights I tend to use these little things more often than any of them because they are small, versatile and usually bright enough for my purposes.

In addition to that it's no big deal to give one away when someone is impressed, which I frequently do.

  • IMO: 1 battery = dim, not very good. 3 batteries = possibly good bright torch.

    • +1

Well my friend, that very much depends on what type of battery you are using. Rechargeable vs alkaline vs Lion will all be very different brightness levels. A 14500 in this will be much, much brighter than a rechargeable AA

      • I think Lion batteries in torches is rawr

      • Yeap, I just found the 1 battery torches I bought didnt last long and were dull with 1.5v alkalines.
All four 3 battery torches are bright but with so many contact points they tend to flicker a bit.
Honestly though I think my old 6volt dolphins were maybe better to use overall.

        • You've had bad luck and/or chosen bad batteries. I've only got experience with the 12v dolphins. They were huge, expensive to run and considering their size not very bright. But you are right that the small bright torches chew batteries and need to have them changed more often.

    • 3xAA Nimh = 3 * 1.2V = 3.6V. The 14500 is 3.7V. Plenty bright. I have 8 of these puppies.

  • +7

Do these force you to cycle between strong beam/weak beam/and SOS? I hate that function and
    It is such a..turn off..

    • I thought mine were broken when I first experienced this. O_o

    • The ones I got do not, but I do have one that does, and agree it's annoying and useless.

  • +2

These are awesome. I have a bunch and I want to buy more every time I see a deal. Must resist…

  • +3

I've bought a few of these over the years from ol Banga. I'm going out on a limb and will say the light output from these tiny torches are very impressive. They are small enough to carry anywhere. They have a simple one click on/off switch. A handy zoom.

An admirable seller too. I received one that was DOA. One email to the seller and another was dispatched immediately.

  • For $2.49 shipped I'd be happy if it's only 50 lumen. ORDERED & +1 from me. Come on guys. Comdoms are cost more.

    • They don't think it be like it is but it do

    • Tell me SeanSydney 'condoms are cost more' I never seen one with led light. Is there a need to show the way?

  • +2

Using one RIGHT NOW! Blackout around Bankstown NSW! 9.45pm!!
Very bright!!! The torch gets very hot if keep leavig on for a period of time. But small n portable n bright!!!!

    • +4

      wow, fast delivery.

    • you sounded very excited.

    • +1

If the body get's hot it means there is a decent thermal pathway between the LED and the body which acts as a heatsink. In other words it's a good thing :)

  • i had 1 similar to this, worked great till it was attacked by baby and slowly died.
    presumed corrosion

    • Baby or torch?

  • Comes up as $3.31 now?

    • +3

      $2.49 us = $3.31aud

      • AH! thanks for the pointin this out! :)

    • +12

Bought 2 just to store my eneloops in

      • You only have two eneloops to store? I hope by that you mean that the rest of your much more sizable eneloop collection is in service elsewhere ;)

  • How do these compare with the regular CREE Flashflights we've all been buying over the last 24 months?

These are a different shape & design. Same brightness? I need another 5, but I like the other design, are these worthwhile?

  • If you wanna get the most out of this torch, feed it a 14500 battery

    • Any idea where I could purchase some 14500 battery and which chargers to use?

  • +2

Guys beware that the quality was very poor for the one I recieved last time. Buttons were loose and pressing multiple times will get the right lumens!

    • And probably my fault (thought it wasn't left on), but the one I ordered somehow became incredibly hot and burnt my finger when I opened it up (so stupid) to see what was going on. The metal portion that connects to the lamp scolded me in an instant. Not buying again, but the torch does make a very bright light.

  • Just what my drawer needed, another Cree torch.
At least it'll be in good company

  • Perfect and just in time. Had my old Cree torch pinched when we had workers come over to fix the house.

  • Not sure if it was the same deal but I never received the torch from the last deal.

Edit: It was the deal from TMart

  • Do you guys get confirmation email ?

    Bought two but no email

    • Got mine straight away

  • How does it compare to the last one that was on sale?

    OzBargain

I got it and it's pretty decent, does use up juice a bit quick though.

  • These cost AU $3.28. Ebay has these for $2.09 what is the difference between the two? Ebay also has the "Q5" for $2.94 here. It seems everyone is stating incorrect LUMENS so which way should I go to get the best bright for buck cheapy torch?

    • For one, more reviews on banggood.

  • I got my 2, I'm impressed with them, they seem plenty bright and I don't even have new batteries in them, the zoomable thing is really cool too. I'm happy with my purchase for sure!!

DISCLAIMER: I've never owned a "good" flashlight so I don't really have a point of reference, but for the price I paid I'm happy.

  • Still haven't received mine, sent on Apr 1. Takes a while to ship?

  • Received mine today, doesn't have CREE printed on them.

    • same with mine
