      mainly for company's

you be able to log into their cloud, use their infrastructure, computing power, storage, applications (which u can purchase with the 300 bucks I guess)

useful if you want to run a start up company or if you want to test out running complex programming etc, but don't want to by the software or hardware, u use google's

You could run VM as a torrent seed box for two months to get your ratios up.

Or you could use it for cryptocurrency mining ;)

    • Setup your own VPN or proxy server if you want, and surf via Google:

Not sure if it is just me, it actually asks me for my credit card information and won't let me start my trial without it.

    • That's not uncommon for trials. Is there a recurring subscription that they will impose after the trial period? Often you just have to remember to cancel before the trial period finishes.

Reason for that comment is the title says no cc required

Meh, Amazon does 12mths free basic servers for 12mths & you can chose the Sydney DC

    • I was wondering about that. It seems like a free way of having a virtual PC. I've seen that offer and have been wondering what the catch was.

The servers are fairly lo spec (for windows)
And you just have to stay within the limits.

        http://docs.aws.amazon.com/awsaccountbilling/latest/aboutv2/…

The nice thing is that you can have say 10 servers, but power them down when not in use & you get to play with more toys (you basically get another CPU hours to last 1 server 1 month).

    • Could you mine cryptocurrencies for free with that? I know you'd get minuscule power compared to a proper miner, but…free

  • I've been using this since late last year to host a basic site using this guide - http://www.labnol.org/internet/host-website-on-google-app-en…
I provided a CC but disabled auto billing later and after the trial expired and it still seems to work. From memory, I think there's a free tier after which payment is required but for low usage, it seems to be fine.

    • There is a free level. It'll depend on what you need access to as well as your volume as to whether you can get by on a free account or not. The free level from memory doesn't allow access to a database which is probably the first thing many people would need to add to their site if they're looking to run many web applications.

Isn't this trial offered as standard? I used the same trial late last year. I'm not sure it's much of a deal really.

Gave it a go but ended up going back to my other host. Was certainly a different way to what I was used to for managing site content where a lot more config was done locally and you use Googles tools to then sync everything. My current host would see me using an ftp client at which point I'd do everything online. Unfortunately I couldn't get the Google services to play too well with my WordPress template, probably due to some restrictions around PHP, and I didn't feel inclined to spend too much time debugging it when everything worked fine on my existing host. Maybe down the line I'll give it a second shot, especially since Google seem to be slowly allowing support for more and more calls based on an email I received about two weeks back regarding changes to PHP.

Yes they have been offering this trial for a long time now. App engine is constantly being developed and improved, so their PHP support should be a lot better now (they didn't even have it when I was using it a few years ago).

      • To be fair, the Google services seemed to work with some other themes I had installed, but I was keen to stick with the one I had since I'd just purchased it.

If Google offers me a free 'come back' trial I'll give it another shot. Unfortunately it'll cost me to do any further trials since my previous one expired and since then Dreamhost, who I use, has upgrade their infrastructure for the plan I'm on so everything chugging along fairly well right now. Not that it'd be especially expensive since I get almost zero traffic and only require a small database to run the backend.

        • Try signing up for the free trial under a different account (email).
App engine is free for small traffic, but I guess the database (Cloud SQL) is probably going to cost you a small amount.

Can I use the credit to buy $300 of Google devices ???

As if I could! $300 of virtual cash to spend on virtually nothing I want.

  • only for new customers :(
