Sweet price, though limited features. Great Xmas gift for a child's first phone.

    • +3

"childs first phone"!? A little condescending. Its not a toy.
These basic Nokias are great phones for anyone who just wants a phone, and maybe SMS.

I wish my techo-phone could run for a week or two between charges like this one.

        I said:

Great Xmas gift for a child’s first phone.

        And you read:

Only good for a child’s first phone.

As someone else mentioned, it would be great for Grandma as well; people for whom a severe lack of features would be a good thing.

It's actually still better than my first phone, and I thought that was frickin' awesome!

        • +1

Dude, you're still coming across as a little elitist and patronising, coz you're still pidgeonholing prospective purchasers of these phones as technically inept!

You've gotta think outside the box a bit…these phones are also great for tradesmen, travellers, active people, small business, the list goes on…even down to reformed techies like me who have been through the gadget phase and only call, txt and don't bother wearing watches nowadays! ;)

Actually, kids are pretty spoiled & competitive these days, they all want every feature available just coz little Britney or Timmy's got them…if I gave this phone to any of my little nieces or nephews the micro-snobs would probably throw it back at me! Horses for courses! ;)

            @StewBalls:

you’re still pidgeonholing prospective purchasers of these phones as technically inept!

Perhaps that's your subjective interpretation. Rather than the users being technically inept, I am merely pointing out that the phone is technically limited.

            tradesmen…small business

The tradies I know would not find this phone satisfactory for their work due to the lack of wireless handsfree (via Bluetooth).

            travellers, active people

a.k.a. people who are at high risk of losing their phones, so a cheaply replaceably device is a good idea! I had not considered that, so yes, thinking outside the box. :)

even down to reformed techies like me who have been through the gadget phase

Nope, I've said nothing to imply your exclusion from prospective purchase of this phone. Heck, I've not even implied that I would not get this phone myself, so why is everyone so offended and defensive?

Good deal for a cheap unlocked phone, if all you need a mobile for is to phone, text and sms.

LOL @ all the "Nos" in the feature table.

Pity simplicity always seems to be paired with cheapness. This phone's a good example - chunky and toy-like from the gsmarena pics. Is there an equally uncomplicated phone but with a decent screen and elegant design?

      • +2

Simplicity is normally paired with being used for simple things I guess - if all you're using it for is texting and calling the screen is very good. Also the design means it's robust and not likely to break easily (unlike most phones on the market)

Great Priced phone for either kids first, or seniors

    • +1

thats the one seniors get when they buy the package advertised in the Seniors mag. I know somone who got one through them.

  • usually $49 everywhere else. ok i guess

    • Yeh these are $48 at my local Woolworths and that's their regular price (not a special or anything).

  • You guys reckon this would have a Chinese option for languages for the menu? It does say 80 Languages but got to clarify…

    Cheers

    • very likely i'd say. the easiest way is to log onto a chinese website and look for the phone type.

    • +1

Had a look at the nokia AU web site and it doesn't mention any Asian languages in the specs.

      http://www.nokia.com.au/find-products/all-phones/nokia-1209/…

Though I did buy an unlocked 2600 earlier this year and it only has English, Philipino and Chinese (Chinese characters) as the available languages. So maybe this one may as well.

  • +1

    Now thats cheap…

The GSM arena specs show 96 x 98 pixels, but says otherwise on the desc.

    4MB of memory - woo!

Good buy for first phones, grandparents etc - can pick them up cheap as chips nowadays.

  • Perfect for Stix to track his "appointments"

  • +4

HEY watch the age discrimination comments !!! Seniors, Grandparents kids etc!!! If you continue we'll have you put in an Ozbargain corner with your back to the wall have have you write out 100 times "I will respect ….."

Some of us others here do use phones for just phoning - yes a novel concept LOL

    • +1

Darn tootin'! I use my phone for exactly three functions: calls, text & clock, that's it! Even my basic Nokia has a hundred more features than I need! ;)

I have a nice Fuji digital camera that takes much better photos than any phone!
I have an iPod touch that, last I checked, covered pretty much all my media playing requirements!
Finally, I have a bloody house full of computers, so why the hell would I wanna email & browse on a phone!

Sadly, phones have become the latest accessory for the fashion victim. So many people I know sign up for exhorbitant plans they really can't afford or use; just so they can get the latest gadget; only to have it superceded within days of getting it! There's a definite image problem there! ;)

      • i have a c905 sony mate with 8.1mp camera, u think ur camera is better than that?

        • +1

nice phone, but has a tiny (cmos?) image sensor and no optical zoom.
Almost any real camera on the market is much better. Even a $99 special.

The Nokia 1000 series (nokia budget line) are great little phones. The sound quality is good, the battery life is 1-3 weeks depending on how many calls you make, and the buttons are nice to press. 4mb of memory is plenty for these phones when you realise that they don't support mp3 ringtones, java games or video wallpapers. 4mb is a lot of space for contacts, alarms and short text memos. If you need a mobile for phone calls and sms, this is an excellent choice.

We had a lot of trouble setting my Grandma up with a basic mobile phone. The first two (motorola) kept dropping out before the activation could be completed and were returned to the store. The third phone (also a motorola) lasted for about 18 months before it simply stopped working.
The fourth phone (a samsung) has difficult buttons. She can't tell where the buttons were, or if she has pressed them or not. In fact she has to hand the phone to someone else whenever she wants to make a call. She keeps pressing the "lower volume" button on the side of the phone by accident. Although the reception seems to be ok, every call has a crackly sound that both people can hear.
I wish my family had purchased her a budget nokia like mine instead.

    • 1-3 weeks battery life? Wow! I leave my mobile on for a couple of days and it goes dead.

  • I'm with 3 so no good for me, but I've always wanted something like this in the good old days.

Now I wish they can make a basic phone with bigger keys, screen and fonts.

Went to Big W at 10 am and they took 20 minutes before they could tell the angry mob they're sold out. I walked out and took their catalogue off the counter and and went into Tandy (aka Dick Smith) next door. I asked the Tandy guy if they've got a phone like that and he pulled it out of cupboard… when I said pricematch he did it no problems. They're both Woolworths brands so I suppose it's only right.
