Xiaomi Mi Wi-Fi Mini Router Dual Band 2.4GHz / 5GHz 1167Mbps AC @DealsMachine ~AUD $38 Delivered

140
retailmot15

I am not sure when the coupon will expire but RetailMeNot website says 31/12/2015 which is quite long?

Anyway, it doesn't seem this router has been posted before and today I came across on GearBest website on special for US$34 which attracted my attention. Then I did some googling and found that it is cheaper on DealsMachine. Using coupon retailmot15 you get 10% discount which after taking shipping cost into account it adds up to ~AUD 38. Other online retailers that I checked have it at higher price.

It seems like it has good reviews and it looks good. Having had two other Xiaomi products, I am hopeful that this is gonna be good router to replace my old d-link.

The only caveat is the UI is in chinese only. You might need Google translator when configuring it. Also there are some attemp to translate it to English (PC client)

Has anyone here used one of these? Is it any good magic WiFi best signal #1?

    • I haven't tried the router, but my family and I have a small fleet of the phones (Mi3 and Mi4GLTE), a few Mi Bands and a few of the 10400mAh battery packs. Love them all!

Integration between products seems to be pretty nice. I suspect that Xiaomi will become a bit of a threat to the likes of Apple and Samsung in time.

The MIUI Android OS seems a little nicer in version 5 than the newer iOS8-like version 6.

My phone (Mi3) has a "Notify me when a Mi Router is available" option in the wifi settings, so I anticipate that there'll be some "play nice" going on between the phone and the router.

AUD$38 is slightly better than the best price (US$32.19) I could find on AliExpress, too.

      • Yeah I like my Mi band, but I'd like to see a proper review of the router. Planning to get a modem and wifi router to replace our ancient Thompson modem/router that came with the Telstra plan about 5 years ago.

        • Yeah like you, I have an ancient modem. But I have been so pleased with all the Mi products. Got the Hongmi note, miband and 10400 battery packs! All so good.I might bite the bullet on this one, but hopefully this isn't a fake.

Just a note to the OP, the site's exchange rates are old and are set to ''$1AUD = $0.85USD'' - 32.09USD. Real price is more than $42. Still doable, but not as sweet. (Current PayPal 32.09USD = $43.61AUD)

        • Yeah, when you select AUD on their website the price looks better/lower then when I checked out/paid using PayPal, it still showed the lower price but once I placed the order, the emails I received showed the USD price converted to AUD using PayPal's rate which is what I was charged. I'm not going to bother to correct/complain about this as the price is still OK though not quite as good as it seemed but this is erroneous/lax processing ends up charging slightly more than you are lead to expect. Using a credit like 28 Degrees to pay in USD with no conversion fee might avoid this but I'd be hesitant to hand them credit card details and forgo PayPal buyer protections when items they sell can be found on eBay for similar/better price.

        • @samlor: If you use a credit card which is linked to your PayPal to check out, it charges the base currency the store gives PayPal. So your 28 degree should be fine. But I do feel a little cheated. I can take a few percent extra, but this is jus a little too much.

        • +1

@plague69: Oh, link my 28 Degrees card to PayPal, duh. Don't know why I didn't think of that, thanks. And, yeah, I feel the same way so will be now looking to look/shop elsewhere first.

    10/100 uplink? ayyyy lmao

    • Says it all.

    • Would work great as a wireless repeater for anyone on ADSL2+ / 30Mbit cable.

      • as a wireless bridge it might be useful but again, you're gonna be limited by the 10/100 being used to suck down that data

and you will most likely need openwrt to access that feature, if indeed the chipset supports bridging

Why not just connect your main router to a LAN port, turn off DHCP and set the router IP to be a free IP within the same subnet?

This is how I have configured previous repeaters with success. DHCP leases all come from the main router and that sets the gateway to be the main router at the same time.

Some great Chinglish on website. Apparently this product can help to weaken my sleepy family. How can I resist ;-)

    • Creative, direct and swift connection

Creative connection? Like with tin cans and stuff?
      Good deal though.

      • "A key switch, the metamorphosis of universal relay let home WiFi coverage without dead angle"

        this one slayed me

metamorphosis? dont use that word unless you are talking about butterflys

        • I hate dead angles. I prefer my angles alive and kicking. Maybe they meant "dead angel"?

openWrt is available for the device
    http://en.miui.com/thread-64391-1-1.html

    • It runs OpenWRT out of the box. http://www.mi.com/miwifimini/#param

My guess is that it's a modified OpenWRT.

not been able to install on mine, too many hoops and the chinese UI is a real shit, requiring the use of a webportal. When I have time I will give it another go.

        • If you use Chrome translate is it easy to config the router? Or did you install the English Xiaomi client?

Here's some instructions on how to flash it. Although you need SSH access, which apparently you get from your

Only downside being that this records your browsing history and sends it to the Chinese government ;)

    • +4

up to you, do you prefer Chinese Gov ,US Gov or Unknown Gov?

    • +4

      Install openWrt then.

Besides it won't be anything our own government isn't already doing…. :S

    • +1

maybe, but still better than US government. :)

    • Any gold in your browsing history?

  • Have not kept up to date with AC router prices, but assume this is a pretty good deal.
Comments from any experts? Openwrt is a bonus.

    • Buy this if you wanna buy a sub $100 router.
Just don't expect it to do the same jobs as well as $300 ones

      • +1

$300 will be next step up ac1750/1900 and have gbe

if it had gbe i'd have ordered one already

      • Thanks, thought as much. Something simple and dual band with usb2 is handy, especially with openwrt.
AC is just a bonus feature I can't really use anyway.

  • It says it has usb home server, is that dnla? Will my sony tv see it on the network?

    • DLNA- YES

  • Can the experts please help? Would this benefit ADSL 2+ users? I have a 5 year old router http://www.netgear.com.au/home/products/networking/wifi-rout…
My current down speed on this router is 10Mb/s, whereas main modem is 15Mb/s. Hoping this will get the same speed as the main modem.

    • +1

this router is by definition, NOT NBN ready

not saying i agree with this classification

    • +1

This is Wifi only, does not have a modem built in. Your internet speed will only be as fast as your modem is able to connect, minus overhead.

    • I think you are talking about the wireless speeds when you say 10Mbps. Is that right? The wired connection speed should exceed 15Mbps on your Netgear WNR1000.

  • +1

The bad is the UI is chinese. Anyone can comment on its goodness compared to
    other routers priced around $50?

    • +1

the router can have all the feautures in the world but if you're feeding that ac1200 antenna on a 6/7Mbps stream you will never realise the performance of 11ac

so in summary, this router is pointless and not worth buying

  • Can it be configured as a bridge or wireless extender?

    • did u follow the link? if u scroll down in really bad English it does say something about it being a repeater… then again it could be meaning something totally different …

      • it does support openwrt luci whatevs so i would go down that path… i have done a few openwrt installs and it isnt easy and hell, i know what i'm doing

  • Oh shit I just bought two and realised that it only has 10/100 Ethernet, completely useless with cable modem. How the hell do I cancel?

    • I'd think that a cable modem with a SpeedBoost plan will top out around 110Mbps, but the WAN port 10/100 should not be used over 80% or you will risk dropping packets. So that seems like 80Mbps < 110Mbps and thus the router will not support the maximum rate.

However, it is not completely useless, as it will support most of your capacity. Also, if you can put only some of your network traffic on the router, it would be pretty good; for example, you could get two of these and they would work fine until you get gigabit fibre. On the other hand, buying network gear that is already a bottleneck doesn't seem like a wise purchase.

  • How about the Xiaomi 1167Mbps Dual Band AC Mi WiFi Router with 1TB HDD, also from dealbest?

    http://www.dealsmachine.com/best_230733.html

Seems to solve most of the issues as it has 10/100/1000 ports, and after entering the coupon above (retailmot15), it costs AUD$159.41 plus AUD$17.96 for AUD$177.37 delivered.

1167Mbps 802.11 AC dualband router, gigabit ethernet, built in 1TB HDD.

  • Few questions for anyone who has used one:

Can it be used as a WAP? (cable link to main router and then just broadcasting WiFi with no NAT, DHCP or anything)
Are the WiFi channels able to be set for Australia, otherwise we may have some trouble making full use of the 5GHz spectrum and compatibility with devices.

    Cheers

    • Never used one myself. The OS is in Chinese so out of the box I would definitely not try any fancy stuff.

OpenWRT is very customisable, so if you were able to follow the instructions on flashing the router, I'd say it can do everything you ever dreamed about.

M8, you just made my day. Bought with the XiaoMi :D

edit: Got to final page, Shipping cost goes up by $11 :( more than the item… Just bought XiaoMi

***Also just a warning, the site's exchange rates are old and are set to $1AUD = $0.85USD. Real price is more than $42 still serviceable

  • So I contacted this website an hour after I purchased and asked for a refund, as per their conditions. Their 'live chat' promises to respond in 24 hours, they didn't get back to me for 48 hours. Then they told me my routers had already been packed, and they couldn't offer a refund, despite it not being posted. I have now initiated a paypal cancellation, but don't know how that will work. We will see what they say.

Oh and added to this, I stupidly put my actual mobile number into this terrible website, and have started receiving spam sms from China on both regular SMS and whatsapp, trying to sell me sunglasses.

DO NOT BUY FROM THIS WEBSITE. AVOID.
