Very similar to the aldi autoxs charger only twice the price

    • +2

CTEK are pretty generally accepted as one of the best chargers available on the market. I'd hardly say that the Aldi ones are comparable…

    • +1

Its not a great deal, but if youre in the market for one…

Aldi and CTEK are not really in the same class though.

      http://www.aulro.com/afvb/1815363-post1.html

"Not all switch-mode chargers are the same: The Aldi Auto-XS and Lidl TX4 smart-chargers are not the same as a Ctek XS - the Ctek uses higher quality components, and provides for transient suppression (removes mains voltage spikes to prevent surges, sometimes up to 1000v AC) at the input and uses capacitors on the output to smooth the current. This gives very low ripple (nearer to pure DC as a battery is) which means that on-board electronics are not affected and thus the battery can be left connected to the vehicle whilst charging - even through an optional cigarette lighter plug. The Lidl charger has 3-times higher ripple content, the Aldi is not specified, but the circuit does not include smoothing, so is also likely to be much higher: there may be a risk of damage to sensitive electronics if left connected to the vehicle whilst charging."

      • If battery is in reasonable state, that should act as a large capacitor - filtering ripple. But I would not risk unknown chargers for a relatively small saving.

CTEK has a good reputation in chargers. Quality control on Aldi electronics is terrible. (I was approached by a manufacturer to Aldi to help solve it - it wasn't worth even trying.)

    • I don't see what's wrong with a hobby grade intelligent charger like this for a fraction of the price:
      http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__25873__IMAX_B6_50W_5A…

I've never had a problem charging lead acid batteries with one and it is also capable of charging LiPo, LiIon, NiMh and LiFe batteries

      • Also need a power supply for this though.

      • Need to factor in price of 12+V 5A power supply.

Not specifically designed for a range of car etc batteries like the CTEK specialist automotive chargers - that's what you're paying for. I'm yet to see LiPo, LiIon, NiMh and LiFe batteries in everyday automotive use ;-)

Lacks the specialised staged charging that makes these maintenance chargers so different - can be continuously connected to battery in the vehicle to ensure always in optimal charged state, has a reconditioning state to care for build up on plates, etc.

So, yes you could charge a car battery with that charger like almost any cheap car charger, but you'd miss out on the main reason why people buy this type of charger.

Best to read up on this type of specialised staged maintenance charger before assuming you think your solution is better or cheaper. It could be an expensive mistake.

  • Been this price including bumper for quite some time. Every time I check, it says this week only!

It's always around this price at this business. Reportedly has been cheaper - probably due to higher aud.

Talked with "technical expert" at RACQ (am a member). Needed a way of maintaining battery in my elderly Father's car, which is rarely driven. This was the recommended charger. Also recommend by a couple of auto shops.

Decided to drive his car weekly instead of buying a specialised charger, for time being.

  • Whirlpool discussion with link to similar cheaper Jaycar charger
    YouTube videos, manual online

    • +1

This is the link to the roughly equivalent, albeit slightly lower amperage, Jaycar model. I have three of them.

They also used to sell a 5-stage, 1 Amp model, priced between the 3.8 Amp and the 750mA unit (the one linked in the Whirlpool thread). I have one of the 1 Amp little ones, and it has been fine.

Of the aforementioned three… One failed under warranty and was replaced, and one failed at about the 15 month mark (before publicity about 'statutory warranty' provisions - may have been useful)…
Surgery, by me, has kept the second unit functioning.
The third remains ok, but hasn't had as much use as the other two.

Just on the offchance that the C-TEK chargers come out of a different factory, possibly a better option.

  • Good chargers. Don't think the price is all that special though. I paid about $110-120 for mine but that was about 4 years ago now

  • +1

I have had this charger for a while now. Very good quality and worth every cent. Get this and don't bother with the cheaper ones.. The 5A version is a good usable size too.

  • I was looking at this but ended up buying a NOCO Genius G7200:
    http://www.geniuschargers.com/images/products/interfaces/G72…
    Pretty happy with my purchase.

    • "Input Voltage AC 110-120 VAC" have to use a transformer? or you must live in USA/Japan.

      • +1

I bought the Australian one, its 240V.

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/361011940672

I bought it on eBay from 4wdextreme in Adelaide for $140 delivered (the same place I bought my D34 Optima yellow top from) but they don't have it in their eBay store at the moment.

  • Yes in this day and age when car electronics control so much of the car, why go cheap and take the risk?

I have one of these and recommend it.

  • These are on ebay with a free silicon cover for $98 to 99.99 with free delivery.

This one is only a bit cheaper.

  • I have one and recommend it.
