Any good data sim cards which have long expiry dates? like half yr or 1 yr?

    • +2

Yeah right, not from this guy! Had some serious issues with SIM cards from this dealer before so in my can't be trusted book

      • Iv pmd you. Ill get it resolved if you reply to that. Thx

        • +10

          @clarky:
how can i resolve it if i dont know what it is? Anyway, upto you

        • +5

@erroorfree: There isn't anything to resolve. The SIM card issues we have already communicated about. The OzB guidelines allow negative vote of deals if you have had problems with the dealer. Looking through past deal posts I'm not the only one who has had issues (false information, bank deposits only, wtf?) but im happy to wear the negative votes from the community because that's what OzB is about.

        • @clarky: one of the deals last yr was bank deposit cause the margins didnt allow paypals 3% cut

      • +2

I've ordered several Google Play vouchers, and three of the same SIM cards as this deal ~6 weeks ago, no issues whatsoever and extremely prompt delivery. So, thumbs up from me.

PDF template for manual SIM cut. Have used it to cut standard size sim to nano and worked perfectly.

    http://www.gosoftworks.com/GoSoftWorks/NanoSIM_files/nanosim…

NOTE:- Make sure you specify "actual size" when you print the template out and use sharp scissors, test on an old credit card first.

  • I have these 3GB Data Sim and FYI, you can contact Telstra team to convert it to a normal Prepaid SIM.
and use the $30 credit on Google Play Store.

    • how do you use the 30$ credit in google play store?

    • It might be a bit time consuming to convert that into a prepaid voice SIM plan. Best to do the whole activation process by talking to a customer rep. If you done it online, then wanting to convert, it could be quite messy (so avoid that).

To use the $30 credit (after you managed to convert it to a prepaid voice plan), you need to put the SIM into an Android phone. Then, run Google Play Store, when purchasing an app or a game, one additional payment option will come up to allow you to pay using the prepaid credit.

However, there is a limit of maximum of $20 per transaction. Also, sometimes it is easier to get it working with a Telstra Android prepaid phone.

    • Have you done that with these particular standard size DATA SIMs?

That was standard practice with the old iPad 3G DATA micro/nano-SIMs.

As far as I know, these are set up as data packs on standard SIMs, according to the PMs I receive. According to advice from Telstra, these can't be converted to $credit as not that type of SIM. I've tried & failed with standard size DATA SIMs included with mobile broadband modems.

      Happy to be learn otherwise.

      • +1

yes, just did it last week.
I activated it online and there was a $0 credit and contacted the PRE-PAID team via Chat and they sorted it out.

        • +1

Damn, they wouldn't do it for me. Good to know. Thanks. I'll pass that experience on.

Could possibly then change to Longlife phone plan to preserve credit for 6 months.

        • @brucefromaustralia: Agree with brucefromaustralia based on past experience. It wasn't easy for me either. It took a lot of explaining and took nearly 30 minutes to sort out.

To me, it is not worth the trouble. The only reason I got mine done was because the mistake was initially made by a Telstra store rep (had problem with my $30 prepaid starter kit (voice one) and he replaced it with one of the iPad prepaid $30 SIM).

Best not to go through that. You might be able to get it done, but then there is also a risk you won't be able to.

    • My experience with this is that it's possible but a big hassle. Don't buy many thinking to do this.

  • +1

could not find the Voda $50 sim pack on your website?

  • If you swap the Sim at the Telstra shop, then the 21/03/15 expiry shouldn't be an issue (Except explaining it to the call centre).

    • the expiry is a killer because coles does these deals every so often and most have no expiry

      • +2

what do you mean no expiry? all telstra sims have an expiry. its a different story if they dont mention it.

      • How long it takes to ship To Perth ?

        • we will start dispatching them tomorrow. i think standard envelope service takes 3-5 days to deliver.
(revival of auspost's dying letter delivery segment lol)

      • +3

Different Telco. Those were Vodafone 3GB DATA SIMs, which effectively have no expiry date.

    • +2

SIMs expiry can't be changed. Must be activated to swap.

  • purchased one, thanks

  • +1

    Aren't the 3GB now 2GB once activated?

    • +1

      nope still 3gb

    • +1

Different SIM. Current Telstra retail SIMs ($30 Starter Pack) activated as tablet device gets you 2GB as recharge on activation.

If these are as I suspect a SIM with 3GB data pack, that's what it delivers & can't be converted to a $credit value. These standard size SIMs are usually included with mobile broadband modems. They are different to old iPad SIM Starter Packs (miro/nano-SIM).
      That needs to be confirmed.

      Expiry date can't be changed.
Can SIM swap free to different size at Telstra Shop, but that activates SIM.
Otherwise if you have a sharp pair of pincer pliers, can be cut to size in seconds if you mark accurate outline of desired SIM size on standard SIM.

Other helpful details in How to get most from Telstra Starter Packs Wiki. Check current info from Telstra as changes often.

      • I had the 3GB Ipad sim pack before and upon activation online which was after Telstra discontinued that sim pack and change their plans, it only gave me 2GB as it goes through the normal activation screen as the normal sim packs. I think you may have to call them to get the 3GB credited to your sim. I don't use that much data so I didn't bother chasing them up.

        • "They are different to old iPad SIM Starter Packs (micro/nano-SIM). "
Apple never produced an ipad taking a standard sized SIM like these. As far as I know, these are 3GB DATA packs on standard SIM, so no issue getter correct amount of data. A few people have PM me for advice after buying these. (I have never bought as expiry is too short.)

      • PissULR confirmed these can be converted to $credit value which may be useful for some. That was not my experience when dealing with Telstra.

        • I wouldn't be too sure about that he might've got lucky. Slightly different scenario for me, however I asked them to credit me 2u from one of these Sims and they told me they were data only with no credit and it couldn't be done.

        • @Punkboy:
Yes, unless you can first get them to convert to $credit value, there is $0 credit to transfer.

        • @brucefromaustralia:
I had another mobile broadband SIM with 2gb from a starter pack which also had 30 credit. With that I was able to creditme2u 10 bucks through a chat rep who told me it wasn't allowed for mobile broadband plans and would do so as a one off good will gesture. Tried again a week later with another chat rep and he refused, said that he checked previous chat transcripts and that it was strictly one off and he couldn't do it again. I pressed hard and he supposedly went to a supervisor who reinforced what he said. So I now have 20 bucks credit on a SIM that I can't do anything with because it is mobile broadband.

        • +1

          @Punkboy:
They were wrong. They've told me that.

Telstra customer service have great difficulty understanding CreditMe2u, especially with data plans.

I have read out Telstra's own conditions about its use and they argued for 14 days I was wrong, eventually saying I needed to take the matter to the TIO if I did not agree with their interpretation which disagreed with Telstra!

Easiest way is to put SIM in phone, dial #100# select CreditMe2u, enter phone number to transfer to, & amount of $1-10.

        • @brucefromaustralia:
Yep, did that and the recharge menu did not have creditme2u and the chat rep told me it wouldn't have it in the menu. Maybe I'll try another rep and see what happens however the last one took a lot of time

        • @Punkboy:
Yes, took 45 minutes once to do a CreditMe2u talking with them. #100# did not work for me at that time, so got csr to do it manually. When I requested them to do it again, they threw a hissie fit, checked with supervisor, said it was a once of… and took their time.

There were reports before that CreditMe2u option was missing from #100#, but appeared later, so worth a retry.

Just checked using #100# on 2 Telstra data SIMs - 1 had option for CreditMe2u, other didn't!

CreditMe2u has also been available on https://www.facebook.com/Telstra24x7

  • Great deal, bought 3 as I need some data over the next month or so :)

    • +1

9GB is "some data" to use before end of April ;-)

      • +2

when I'm streaming NBA League Pass games at work in HD, I can use pretty much any I can get!

        • +3

It's just I get a few PM from people who misunderstood what they were buying when they bought these - wasting their money. You'll need them ;-)

I just use the free WiFi in my free OzBargained Regus Business Lounge, for unlimited downloads. Watch movies, drinking good free coffee, with a great view over the Brisbane River :-) Life is so tough for an OzBargainer.

  • Well, I hope cutting these myself with a pair of stanly knife will work.

    • A sharp pair of pincer pliers (if you have them) works very well. These apply a sharp edge to both sides of the SIM at same time. A stanley knife will work, just be careful - and it's a pain in comparison.

SIM swap at Telstra Shop is painless solution.

      • +1

well iv used scissors on a template to chop these into micro. i wouldnt recommend chopping it nano.
You might wanna go to your telstra store to swap. or just get yourself a cutter from ebay

        • cutting nano with scissors is not too bad.. just cut it to the size of the chip and cut off the correct corner

    • +1

Too easy. I cut a few with those heavy duty kitchen scissors, did the job.

  • ive been using the telstra sims recently and they've only been giving 2gb of data not the previous 3gb. can anyone else confirm?

    • I activated one of these a couple of weeks back and got 3gb.

    • As I've already commented, that's a different SIM to these DATA Only SIMs.

  • I purchase it before never got my item, thank god i use PayPal.

  • They are shipped in standard envelopes. Thx to auspost for its top notch service

    • I paid the extra $3.50 for registered post last time and received them the next day :)

      • It has nothing to do with registered post. You are in the same state as the seller. That's why you got it the next day.

        • +1

My post was intended to highlight the fact that a) The seller shipped the item promptly; b) The item arrived and was as promised.

  • Wait the Vodafone thing is $25 and includes 3GB data and unlimited voice and SMS? Is that for serious? Is there any reason I shouldn't just buy 12 and use them for the next year? (and anyone know about the increments for data?)

    • +1

I can't see why not. Activating the new sim is painless, but can't vouch for how long it takes to transfer your existing number every month. The data goes fairly quick similar to Optus per 1 MB. Don't forget you also get International calls to 10 countries, landline and mobile.

    • Pretty sure you won't be able to use Mobile Number Portability to port Vodafone to Vodafone, so you'll have to port out to a different carrier's $2 SIM every month, then port back in.

Bit of a pain in the arse but if you can be bothered, power to you :)

The chips in these Telstra sim cards are larger than a micro or nano sim so cutting is not an option as you would have to cut the chip to make it fit.

I know what I'm talking about, I've cut a lot of sim cards down to micro and nano size.

Edit: I've had to replace them with blank micro sims from a Telstra store, such a pita when I expected to just be able to cut them.

    • +2

      Hold on. You said…

cutting is not an option as you would have to cut the chip to make it fit.

      AND

I've cut a lot of sim cards down to micro and nano size

So is it an option or not??? I've dont it many times with no problems…

    • +1

I've done it and it works

  • A silly question: Can Vodafone Data sim can be used overseas?
    Thanks.

    • Vodafone prepaid SIM (for voice + data) can be used overseas, but don't use it for data overseas because $30 won't even last you more than 10 minutes of browsing overseas.

So, yes you can use it overseas, but unless you really want to use up your Vodafone credit in minutes (i.e. you don't want to use it anymore and/or have less than 1 day to use it up), it is not a good idea. Voice, probably is okay for really really short phone calls.

  • Will the Telstra SIM work with an iPad1?

    • yah should be ok as long as its cellular :)

  • Any good with ipad 3?

  • To OP, I've placed order for 2 telstra sims couples of days ago still says pending waiting for confirm? Can you let me know when it will be shipped? If arrive too late it would be no use. Order #4743. Thanks.

    • 50% were shipped yesterday and today. some will be shipped on tuesday. dont worry your still got approx 15 days to activate

  • When I try to use the Telstra SIM (activated as tablet) in my Nexus 5 to purchase an app from Google Play, I get the error "User was not found"

    Any ideas?

    • do you have any credit to spend?

      • Yes I do.
The issue was because I had two google/gmail accounts on the phone.
I removed one, and the issue went away

  • Thanks OP, received my SIMs on Friday afternoon post. Will be activating one next week, hopefully all works out fine!

  • fast post, thanks arrived monday to perth.

  • Noticed a Woolies (Cleveland, QLD) selling Telstra $30 iPad micro-sim Starter Pack for $12 (3GB, exp Sept). Worth asking if local stores have any, but check price & expiry. Other Woolies have had old Starter Packs out of sight behind the counter.

  • -1

If you select a mobile broadband or table plan then you get the 2/3GB of data plus the $30 play credit.

If you select mobile phone option, you get calls but little data.
Do you still get the $30 play credit if you select phone?

  • Well mine that was ordered 7 days ago was not posted. Although I paid for aus post with tracking nothing was ever given to me. I followed it up with an email that remained unanswered and with a phone where somebody told me that it would be shipped tomorrow (this was 4 days ago). So I would not recommend ordering anymore from these guys.

    • Forget what I said :( their mails were lost in the 5k spam emails I have. Still no tracking but at least I have a message that showed as sent.

  • Got mine 3 days after ordering… could have been 2 as it was in a priority envelope but not for the fact that it was put in the RED non-priority post box ;)
Auspost stitched you up by putting a big 'void for being a bell-end' sticker on the front.

  • After years as a Vodafone customer I'm just about to dump them…here's the story, I'm on the $45 per month infinite plan. This plan provides only 1.5 GB of data. it does not provide 300 minutes of standard overseas calls.

The current red $50 plan advertised on the Vodafone webpage provides 300 minutes of standard overseas calls and 3 GB of data additionally as a special offer available until the 9th of April there is a further discount of $5 and an additional 1 GB of data making the final offer available at $45 per month with 300 minutes of standard overseas calls and 4 GB of data.

I called Vodafone and asked to switch to the new advertised $50 red plan which provides much more than my current plan. I spoke to a young lady by the name of Sara at the call center in Hobart. Sara was well spoken and tried to help however she advised the the offer on the Vodafone web page is available to new customers only and not available for existing customers. This seemed unreasonable and unfair from a company which has faced lots of customer criticism and displeasure in the past. Interestingly in the Age today 31 March there is an article in which Vodafone states "Vodafone Australia vows to reverse 'Vodafail' by the end of 2015".
It is obvious that Vodafone has no clue about retention marketing and keeping existing customers happy but rather is simply focused on acquisition marketing sucking in more new customers by new offers which are NOT available to existing customers. Once they attract new customers it seems Vodafone relegates them to a category different to one reserved for potential customers. Anyway Sara advised that she needs to obtain authorization from a supervisor before she can extend the same offer available on the Vodafone webpage to me. After a long wait Sara advised me that Phoebe the supervisor will NOT honor the $50 red package and confirmed that the offer is available only to new customers. I then asked Sara to speak to Phoebe again and point out that her position is not logical or good business, this she did and again confirmed NO can do. I then asked if I can cancel my existing plan and resign on the $50 red plan, after some hesitation Sara said that there are two departments involved in this process and that I would lose my existing number if I attempted this! at this stage I was defeated and gave up. I'm now looking at plans with other providers and so is my partner who is in the same situation with Vodafone

Once again EPIC FAIL by Vodafone.
