Breville Ikon "The Little Genius" Kitchen Scales $25.00 Were $109.95 at Harvey Norman @ Burleigh Waters QLD

570

Finally a deal that I feel comfortable submitting: first time bargain submission. If you want to skip the "narrative" (i.e., dinner) and get straight to business, go to the fourth paragraph…

As you can see in the attached receipt, I've just been pwned by purchasing a sodastream refill - the reason is that I've been looking at finding a cost-effective method of obtaining gas for a sodastream after the puny 15 L starter tank ran out. It appears that using dry ice (accurately weighed) and adding to an opened canister is the most cost effective ($2-3 per refill). Nevertheless, I needed to obtain a "proper" 60-L tank, thus getting pnwed this time will result in savings later…

To the point: I required accurate kitchen scales, and Harvey Norman at Burleigh Waters ran me a deal on the Breville Ikon "The Little Genius" Kitchen Scales (BSK500). These retail at $109.95, best price online is ~$90 (eBay may be $69, but YMMV). Whatever the case, HN provided a really good deal on what appear to be really decent scales (ripped from Myer):

You'll get three kitchen appliances in one when you choose this stylish-looking kitchen scale. It can give you accurate weight measurements, in 1g increments, to a maximum weight of 5kg, and also features a thermometer and an LCD timer…
Feautres:
- Three-in-one, stainless steel, kitchen, scale, thermometer and timer
- Maximum weight reading of 5kg- 1g weight increments
- Can weigh solids and liquids
- Probe-style thermometer can be used for food and beverages
- Maximum temperature reading of 150C- LCD timer
- Digital display
- Can display imperial and metric readings
- Uses one 9V battery
- Includes 5 year replacement warranty

Thanks for viewing my first Deal.

    9V battery :S

    Those aren't cheap.

    • +8

The equivalent of "free beer makes you burp"… smh

      ps. Battery is included

      • -8

Yes, but it's important to note anyway.

BTW, can you confirm that this is a nationwide offer, and not just specific to the particular franchise in QLD that you went to? I couldn't find the product on the website.

        • +22

I gave you the receipt: do with it what you wish.

        • -7

@pensionday: what's with the snarky attitude? Pension didn't come today?

BTW, there are equivalent scales on ebay for around $11 everyday. probably literally made at the same factory minus the logo.

        • @Son ofa Zombie:

Yes let's take a chance with an item on eBay because it's "probably literally" made in the same factory :) I'm sure the only similarity is it's made in the same country.

        • -4

@gokhanh: Nope, my naive, gullible friend.

most supermarket brand items are based upon, if not are identical, to generic products.

Here is your acronym of the day to google:

          OEM

        • @Son ofa Zombie:

I'm sure there are genius, except seeing as the OP didn't post about a generic supermarket brand your post is irrelevant. Supermarket branded stuff is already pretty cheap, how many dollars are you saving buying things like "OEM" kitchen scales…

    • +1

local auspost has these toshiba branded one for only $2 every now and then.

  • +3

I wonder what the accuracy of these is…
I already have 2 different digital kitchen scales and one (or both) of them is wrong.
(And don't get me started on thermometer inaccuracies)

    • Good point: Kitchen scales aren't analytical: if your measurements are critical, I'd pay more for analytic grade.

      • +1

I think calibration may be more than an issue rather than choice of scale grade in the kitchen. Not sure what I would want to measure in the kitchen with a high degree of precision and accuracy to 1g. Happy to be corrected though.

        • +12

          Drugs?

        • The picture on Breville site shows 0.0. http://www.breville.com.au/thelittlegeniustm-kitchen-scale.h…
Could it mean accuracy of 0.1 g? Or the picture is wrong? Or something else?

        • Well, my Kenwood FP950 has built-in scales that claim to "weigh in 2 gm increments" but it's sometimes at least 50gm out, so I've basically given up measuring anything under 100gm with it.

        • +1

I measure ingredients to 1/10th of a gram for polysaccharides. Even Gelatin benefits from precise measurements (especially with temperature)

as to why i weigh rather than measuring by teaspoon: https://www.chefsteps.com/projects/why-work-by-weight/landin…

        • @ddhytz: Tech specs on that site say 1g accuracy.

        • I routinely measure ground coffee to the 0.1g, but use a cheap jeweller's scale for that.

    • +2

A 5 cent piece weighs 2.66 grams, multiply by value for 10 and 20 cents. A 50 cent coin is 15.55 grams and a $1 is 9 grams. A combination should give you a calibration weight close enough for Government work.

Don't forget to wash your hands.

    • +1

Very accurate. I tested one on a known weight.
Incidentally, I also tested a cheap dealextreme one against the icon, and both have the same weight. But at $25 this is good.

    • What are your thoughts on the accuracy of digital timers ;) j/k

      • +2

I can't find any metric ones.

  • is it nationwide or store specific only?

    • only available in the milky way

  • I don't think its nation wide just tried two stores in Sydney and none at this price unfortunately. Great bargain op enjoy!

    • Did you try to price match?

      • Yeah they wouldn't budge

        • +1

I'll try at my local HN and TGG tomorrow.

  • I have one of these and it's great.
9v batteries are cheap on ebay and the battery has lasted about a year so far.

  • Dont get the point of decimals in the quantity. I'm gonna ask for a 1.5x weighing scale

  • +3

    price matched joondalup, wa.

    • Can you post your receipt? I'll head out to Joondalup tomorrow

    • How were you able to price match an item from over East?

Thanks mate. Used your receipt and got a price match at HN Cannington.

I don't know why, but weighing scales are a huge scam in Australia. Take for instance Myer, who sell this scale for $99. They also sell a Sunbeam for $75 http://www.myer.com.au/shop/mystore/sunbeam. It's just a rebranded something, sold by American Weigh on Amazon for just $18 http://www.amazon.com/American-Weigh-EDGE-5K-Stainless-0-1-O…. The markup on the RRP for these things is really ridiculous

    • Wtf that's crazy.. not that i would ever spend that much on scales myself… sounds almost as bad as the ole monster hdmi cables

    • You think $99 is expensive? Try $12,993

By the way, I have used this little $6.50 fella for over three years. Same 2 x AAA batteries and very accurate.

    • Agree on the markup.. I mean even this Breville is available on eBay starting at $65 delivered BIN.

  • +3

Based on the saving I feel I should buy one. We got a glass top salter with a voucher from good guys. Great little scale. Was marked $20. Feel like for 5 buck more this will do so much more while sitting in the cupboard.

    • +2

What I've used it for this afternoon, it was really quite good. The scales were accurate across a few ranges that I tested (50 g / 2.4 kg), and the thermometer was reasonable (within a degree). The thermometer would be fine for things like making yoghurt, but I wouldn't use it for checking fever! :p

  • hi guys, I'm interested in purchasing this. However, I've never price matched in my life before. Can you guys give me an idea on how to proceed with price matching? thanks guys. Its simple right?

    • +3

      step 1: walk into store
      step 2: request price match
step 3*: argue about why the price match should apply

      • only required at certain retailers
      • thanks wozz, in regards to receipt, all i need to do is show them the receipt (image above) and ask for price match? Done? that's all? simple as that?

        • simple as that?

          read step 3 again.

  • -1

OP- you got ripped off with the sodastream bottle replacement.

    • -1

      Did you read the background?

comprehension is strong in this one

  • +2

Great first post Pensionday. Nice work and thank you.

    • +1

Thanks WM: I've been waiting for a worthy submission!

  • +1

Took this into HN and didn't even come close to price matching. Best my HN would do was $60. Which is still not bad.

    • Sorry to hear that. The staff at mine didn't flinch when I requested a best cash price. Seems store to store there are differences in willingness to price match! ?

  • +1

Just broke the glass on my Bellini scale last night so I'll give this a shot.
Shame about it using 9V batteries though. For a scale there is really no reason not to use AA/AAA.

    • At least it's not using CR2032's like our scale, every time we'd go to use it the batteries would be flat again.

(Mind you, after getting sick of replacing batteries all the time, I added a hard switch and the last set I put in (the smaller CR2025's actually as that's all I had at the time) have lasted years. So much for its "sleep mode".

  • +1

Thanx Op, just picked one frm The good guys with the price match

  • +2

@ Minaries, somebloke posted his HN receipt above. I used his to successfully get a price match at HN Cannington in WA. If needed I can post my receipt too. Don't see why they shouldn't price match their own stores in the same state.

    • If you could post your receipt that would be great. I'm going to go to Cannington too :)

      • nvm used that other HN receipt no worries. Good Guys Cannington don't have them.
