I avoid WU like it's the plague… I have an aunty who sent a Nigerian $50,000 through WU even after the Post Office staff took her to the side and informed her that it was a scam… I don't even know why I'm telling you this, OzBargain.

      Whats her email address?

    • +1

      Nothing is "Free"

I wonder what the losses would have been, due to Exchange rate processing?

    • Nigerian has given us so many good deals.
To make more deals coming, someone has to actually send them money via Western Union.

  • +6

Sorry to hear that but how is this WU's fault?

    • Partly is becsuse they don't check gor ID at the other end. But why the hell someone would send 50k to a complete stranger is beyond me.

      • +7

        sounds…made up.

        • I hope so.

        • Definitely.

You can't send $50,000 in one go. There are limits.

Unless his auntie did it in multiple payments.

        • Unless his auntie did it in multiple payments.

Yeah, she did. The first time she went to the Post Office, the staff told her. So she rushed home and ask the Nigerian (who was posing as British) if it was safe which he obviously assured her it was. A few weeks later she lost her business and home and moved in with us.

        • @Dagmar: Are you joking, cause its not really funny.

        • I'm not joking. I don't understand the downvotes. It's a true story. My aunty got caught in a Nigerian love scam.

        • @Dagmar: How do you know the scammer was Nigerian?

        • …Because the money was sent to Nigeria…

    • Main advantage of WU (and a few others like worldremit) is the lack of tax stuff for the receiver, exchange4free and other forex services force the receiver to fill out a government tax form even for small amounts. Money takes forever to clear, then gets stuck in limbo until the paperwork is cleared.

I think you'll find the 'free' fee is built into the exchange rate

  • I thought the chinese were trying to get their money OUT of china.

I was wondering …is there an Eastern Union?

    • +2

Used to be, prior to its collapse in 1991.

Checked their currency rate, not very good, 1.4% lower than Chinese bank rate.

  • +1

They will catch you on FX rate. Don't like them, treate people like idiot

  • Hi my name is China, you won 1 million but need to send me 5% for me to help you unlock the prize…..

    • Hi China,
      My name is Australia.
I would like to offer you a deal.
If you can pay the 5% for me and pay me another 5%, I am willing to share the 50% of the prize with you.
      How does that sound?

      • nope, this deal is for sending $ to china with no fees.

Wait for the one that says to australia. ;)

How about you send me 2.5% first so I can verify it's all real then il send you all my life savings which is a healthy inheritance from my nan.

  • I would only use WU if there were no other choices and I knew the people personally & trusted them.

  • Then again, if someone wants to send me thousands via WU I wouldn't say no :p

    • I'll take Paypal or DD and cop the fees, no problem. Gimme some Cash Money, and I'll love you long time.
