    Eh?

I'd like to see how they react to the powah of Ozbargain.

  • +5

    what……

    • +10

I'll break it down for you.

The owners are probably giving away $200. Maybe more. Maybe less.

In return they get to see, herd, and control an immense amount of sheep.

Most of the sheep don't even know why they are there. Some even know it is irrational. Most don't need the money. They just do it because others are. Insect-like primal signals have been sent to their brains. They can't stop themselves.

And they will do it again.

  • HAHAH! Wow.. That line.

    • +44

You'll never compete with an Asian trying to get free money

      • +7

"Kiasu" would be the word you're looking for :)

I remember the riots outside McDonald's in Singapore with people queuing up overnight to buy a maccas and collect a limited edition "hello kitty" doll…

        • +11

singapore ppl will use their maid to q overnight

      • +1

dont get involved in a land war with them either

      • Yeah they do at funerals, you could also use them on New Years.

    • +8

A Chinese courier service exclusively* serving Chinese in a part of town with more Chinese/Asian presence than CBD Chinatown. Apart from the business name, all the signs are in Chinese too. What did you expect?

*They won't bar you of course but their main business is sending things to China and I doubt there's a huge market for that in the non-Chinese community.

      • -2

Rational folks like you aint welcome 'round 'ere. Can't you see this is the racist commenting section?

    • +39

Obviously not mainland Chinese, if they are standing in a queue though.

      • +3

        lol so bad. I laughed.

        • +6

To those who negged the joke - I wonder if they stopped to think whether those of us who +1'd the joke or found the joke (whether in poor taste / non-PC or not) amusing, happened to be Chinese or have Chinese background..

I mean… it is possible to have a self-deprecating sense of humour. Is that still racist? (genuine question here)

I find it interesting how certain cultures are quite used to, and almost embrace taking the piss out of themselves and their stereotypes (including the negative ones), for instance the English… watch any British comedy and it's all too clear how comfortable they are with mocking themselves and putting themselves in a negative light.

While other cultures really aren't comfortable at all with either joking about themselves.

I say this being half of each of the above.. and I wonder who negged my post :P (though I was expecting more negs, tbh..)

and I wonder how many of the rest of the +1-ers to the joke are also Mainlanders who can appreciate some pisstaking humour :P

        • +2

@waterlogged turnip: Neggers have never been to China.

        • +3

          @waterlogged turnip:
          Most ozbargainers are Asian, anyway

        • +2

          @tchi6:
Went to first OzBargain get together (Brisbane) - most there were Asian. And most of the free wine was left for the Europeans. I had a great time ;-)

        • @waterlogged turnip:
I see what you're saying, but being self-depricating based on race is by definition racist. But is it offensive ? It seems to be the more widely accepted version of it.
Just look at a lot of the comedians in the US whose whole set is depricating their own race, they love it there, even though it's racist because it's "Well he's one of them, and he's saying it - so now we can laugh at it". It shouldn't really matter who's saying it.

I'm not having a go at, you I agree with what you're saying. But in these internet days, if you, being of race A, make self-depricating jokes about said race, you can easily become a vehicle for the unaware to base their prejudices on your words.

That being said, it makes popular TV and Youtube videos, so I don't see it going away anytime soon.

          @bolt_krank:
I took a case to the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Commission.

I had been refused accommodation based on my nationality - Australian.

The business agreed I had been refused accommodation solely based on my nationality. They replied that it was not discrimination for an Australian business, employing Australian staff, to refuse service to an Australian because they are Australian.

The company argued it is impossible to be discriminatory against your own group, based solely on membership of that group.

I argued a case of indirect discrimination, and won a sizeable out of court settlement, a tearful apology from the staff member, and a rewrite of the company's policies to be anti-discriminatory. The case is used as a precedent by that Commission. However I signed a confidentiality agreement, so can't say more.

So being discriminatory against your own group (based solely on membership of that group) is not any better than doing the same thing against another group. But most of us will do it, often to show we aren't racist/ discriminatory.

An old Murri fella taught me to be proud of my people, when I spoke unkindly of the White fella treatment of his mob. He pointed out I was being racist.

      • Lol that is so true.

      • +2

mainland Chinese would just push their way into the front of the queue.

    • +5

Dude, it's in Bok Choy Hill.

    • +2

      so?

    • Did anyone spot a non Asian in the pic?

    • -2

I don't care who were standing there. But please do not confuse between Lunar New Year and Chinese New Year. We are different, we celebrate Lunar New Year and we don't celebrate Chinese new year.

  • +6

That line is huge. Hope they have printed off enough ;-)
Another picture on their banner page: http://www.changjiangexpress.com/

    • I think they have a store across from QV as well. At least the logo looks similar….

      • Yes, 274 Swanston St. Not sure if it's on there. Can't read Mandarin and their page doesn't cater for English readers.

        • Melbourne City 22nd Feb, From 1:00pm, 274 Swanston St. Goodluck everyone.

    • +12

Calling a gift lousy does not show the best character.

    • +12

Realise your on the ozbargain site?
      It's free money…

      • +5

I'm sorry but Dreamcazman has too much swag to get $50 by lining up.

As a matter of fact, he's just gotten Geeves to prepare the spruce moose for his aeronavigational tour to europe.

        • +4

          He just prefers Centrelink.

    • +20

It is a nice gesture I have to admit.

I apologise, I never meant to insult anyone or sound ungrateful, I should've worded my comment better. What I meant to say was depending where you live, it may cost you more in time, petrol & possibly tolls to get to the place & then wait in line. You may not even get $50, you may only get $5.

For the record, I am certainly not rich.

      • +1

So many butthurt & overly sensitive people in OZbargain, especially if it's involved money. If you're not humble & Down2Earth & bigot , they will rape-neg you .

For example like this comment, it will be rape-neg shortly

  • +6

ATO office is around the corner. Maybe the govt has instructed staff and get what they can to help with the budget ;-)

  • +7

Wat. This seems like an unusual business decision.

    • +6

Could be cheaper than (or similar to) buying a display ad in the local newspaper, for example.

      Just another form of promotion/advertising.

      • +2

Yes, it's like many other promotional only in RAW version

    • It seems like the right business decision for their target market, ie they know what Chinese people want, ie money!

  • +1

    Whats the catch?

Seriously just giving out free money without a purchase, without a deal or scam, no voucher.

I find it hard to believe that they would just give out $50 cash.

    Seriously?

    • +1

Yes. They do this every year as the Chinese New Year promotion, at least it was last year

    • I got $40 from RediATM for no reason. :)

      • Yes, RediATM free money deal was better - from $20 to $200 per person free money in different cities on more days.

You missed out on $200 :-(
I only got 2 x $20 after team leader pointed me out to get no more :-(

$5 minimum for a long wait is too low after RediATM deal ;-)

  • +1

Oh so that's what this thing is, I saw this dodgy mailing business with no signage or renovation in Melbourne CBD and was wondering what on earth it was.

  • +10

    You had me at "free".

Now, looking for cheapo flights to Melb….

    • Seriously, is this feasible?

How much longer will this deal last?

      • +2

Well, the second release is on the 22nd. We can find out there. It's gonna be a OzBargreunion.
If only I was in Melbourne, I would have brought my entire extended family and some work experience kids to stand in the line. : )

  • +3

Hhhmm, wonder if OfficeWorks will price match ?

    • +8

May be someone has a code for free delivery ; )

  • +2

So did anyone get any cash other than OP?

    • +2

everyone else is still in the queue ;-)

      • +1

I'm at work earning mine (well on a break obviously).

        • haha, is the boss on ozbargain as well :)

  • +5

Anyone who doesn't value their life care to push into the front of the line and film it just for laughs?

  • +3

Got a Red Pocket with $5 only :(

    About 25 minutes queue, with a chances of $5, $10, $20, $50 or $100

    • +2

lol, so was it worth it waiting in line on a nice day like today for $5? Do you have any regret or would you do it again if given the chance?

      • +12

Wow. You must be the reporter from channel 9.

        • +2

Not a reporter, just curious as to how people think. For me it would be too much hassle to go there and line up for $5. But I know there are many others who do not think like me, especially on this site.

        • +2

Nah, if they were a commercial station TV reporter they would have to have 5 "…and coming up next" ads and 3 live crosses before they got to the 10 seconds of news in the story ;-)

      • +2

You could go sit in a pub in front of a poker machine for the day with the sun shining outside and not be assured of any return at all, more likely a loss. Im also guessing the conversations with other people in the line would be better than those in front of the pokies.

        • I doubt it, actually. Conversations would distract from opportunity to cut queue.

        • +1

Mandarin might as well be pokie machine beeps and jingles for all I understand.

    • Photo?

  • +3

Do these also activate on Steam?

  • Wonder why they would be handing out free money. Must be costing them a fortune. I hope the money is legit.

  • +2

That middle cone looks photoshopped in

    • Reds and oranges on digital optical devices often give that impression.

  • -8

You could be fooled to think that photo was taken in a town in China there's that many Chinese people in one place with that much Chinese writing on the buildings. This is in Australia right.

    • +2

Box Hill is an interesting place. Look at the gorgeous European architecture on the top levels. Its a stark contrast to the Asian writing and rather drab looking modern parts. My folks live in Box Hill, it's rather fascinating to see, but also sad as the stunning European style is almost gone.

      • I suppose. Seems alien to me living in a place in Queensland where there's very few Asians. That Box Hill might as well be a part of China going by that photo.

        • +2

Ah, hollykryten, not all Queensland is like Rockvegas ;-)
Not everywhere has big, colourful statues of bulls.

I can hop a bus in Brissie & be in Vietnam - with women squatting down chatting, selecting fish, and the wonderful smells of food! I have cheap holidays like that ;-)

        • +2

I think every major city has a place like that. In Brisbane, it's Sunnybank.

        • +1

          @jonathonsunshine:
I was talking about Inala shopping centre - a bit run down, lots of alley ways with tiny shops, small fish & veggie markets… Sunnybank is too normal for me.

  • +3

Reminds me of the Simpson's episode "free motorboat"…Could be a immigration building.

    • ha

  • +3

I wonder why the jewellery store only has one watch for sale. Maybe his brother, Węll, owns a jewellery store around the corner and specialises in watches

  • +1

While waiting in line, get a haircut from Anna's Salon. You may get the money back. Win-win

    • how much for men's hair cut and do they cut well?

  • Anyone know if this is happening in Melbourne CBD, pretty sure there is one of these businesses on the corner of Swanston and Lonsdale St.

    EDIT: Didn't see EDIT lol

  • +2

    Is it rmb?

  • So, the line for this will pretty much be a copy & paste of the line outside Centrelink, right?

    • +12

Except the people lining outside this are already cashed up wealthy chinese internationals whereas Centrelink will be full of jobless locals :)

  • +3

but how many zip ties do you get ?

  • lol!!!
