Dyson Hot + Cold Bladeless Fan AM05 - $320, Was $535 - Big W

171

Big W is having 40% off all indoor cooling this weekend only. See original post

Most notably, the Dyson AM05 fan with its quiet technology. It can be used as a heater as well.

I know $320 is a bit steep for a fan but Dyson products don't come cheap, or for that matter, get discounted with fans.

  • do they have it in blue?

  • That's a very good price for Dyson. In fact didn't even know big w sold Dyson

Even at this huge discount, PASS. These things are pretty horrible. They are EXACTLY the same as a $12 pedestal up until the very highest setting where they are only LOUDER than a $12, output is no better.

    Cool Factor = 7/10
Build Quality = 6/10 (nowhere near as good as their vacuums)
    Useful Factor = 1/10

I am a big fan (no pun intended) of Dyson products. I have multiple vacuums and two of their fans…one which is the AM05.
I would NOT recommend anyone buy this fan.

Honestly I wouldn't pay more than $150 for it. Sure the heat is pretty good, but the noise (on both hot or cold) makes it unbearable and when oscillating it clicks.
I would happily buy one of their other fans again…just not this one.

Make sure you do your research.

well if you have some naughty kids, their fingers will be saved with the Dyson fan!

      • That's the only reason we have a Dyson fan, my kids will not stop playing with it when it's on. We have the big one that doesn't heat.

        • +5

Any red blooded Aussie kid knows that sticking your fingers in a fan blade doesn't chop them off. It hurts but that's about it.

          @mackaxx: I'm English, I had no need for a fan when I was a kid! :-)

        • @mackaxx: I don't know if I want to try that with my metal blade industrial fan. Don't care about the noise as long as it keeps me cool.

        • @onetwothree: fingers in the heater then!

    • They will improve the noise in all aspects on the next generation as far I think of, the am05 is the first version of it's kind where as the cool range are already in different generations and improved vastly since the first.

    • Thanks for the review mate, makes me pass too… Almost buy one.

    • Agree completely with theJackal23 and KLoNe. I have one and paid $320 about 6 months ago and still feel I was robbed. I also have a Dyson Vac (cordless) which is good, but this product is CRAP. Really noisy even on the lowest setting. A sod to tilt. Doesn't go slow enough (a waft). All round a waste of money. I don't think they are worth over $100.

  • This is on clearance…. Does the 40% discount stack with this?

    • I thought it was a further 25% - where did you get the 40% from?

  • +2

These things are a joke. Do. Not. Buy. At any price.
I'm not going to neg. the OP, because it is a cheaper than average price, but honestly…..Junk!

OZbargain is about providing the best price, you should not neg for the quality from your experience!

      • Disagree - one's experience of the 'quality' of an item helps put the nature of the bargain in proper context

        • so that means one can neg a deal with another item that has perceived better value even if it is higher price?

PS: If that is true, them I am waiting for the Apple deals in Anroid post

        • @skinny:

No, but it is appropriate, if your experience is that you found major issue with product (eg.doesn't work the way it should, counterfeit etc)

        • @Wally: major issues with links, counterfeit, etc - totally agree. Quality based on perception - NO !

        • @skinny:

So, Vote can be based an objective reason other than just Price

      • +4

Read it again. I said I'm NOT going to neg. the OP for that exact reason. Sheesh.

  • Wasnt there a recall on the am05.. ? Think ill wait for the am09

They are still $300 too expensive.

    • Yeah, cannot neg but must comment that this product is a total fail. Ugly, noisy, ineffective, wanky.

I have a small $9 fan on my office desk that puts out more air than one of these Dysons.

The whole concept of the Dyson is a fail - use a noisy hidden fan to blow out a small slot around an ugly oval donut shaped piece of plastic.

It's work a hell of a lot better, and be considerably quieter and smaller as well, if they just put the fan directly behind a louvre.

Or if you want to be really efficient, make the fan exposed, so nothing blocks the airflow. Then put a fine screen or bars around the fan, so that children's fingers will never touch the blades. Then sell it for $15, which is the going rate.

A ceiling fan is better and cheaper, even if you pay for installation.

  • all this discussion about fans is making me think twice about this fan. i thought they were ok, but then again, i was viewing them in the david jones showroom where it is noisier there than at home. also the fact that the fans are blowing nice cool air in the shop as opposed to warm air in my house.
