    bargain!

for peak season, those LA flights are cheap

making me wish I could swap my upcoming late feb trip to then

    • +8

      Or go twice?

      • +1

Do you guys do multi city flights? I wanted to fly into LA and out from NY if possible.

        Cheers

      • ha..
the way the AUD has dropped since last time, my AirNZ 'cheap' flight impulse buy aint that cheap anymore..

Though as we are going to Disneyland as one of the stops, these flight times would be much better due to the current closures/renovations and upcoming 60th birthday celebrations (now, where's that time machine)

  • +9

    i like this rep

  • +2

Fingers crossed the we see similar prices for the christmas period

    • If you mean peak from mid-Dec, no chance of that happening, unless WW3 starts or ISIS starts bombing airports/aircraft everywhere.

  • +2

Maybe I'm stupid, but I'm always confused by the site… it's split into such specific depart/return dates, with such random selections…

I want to fly to the USA anytime after Jul 1st, but I can't tell if there's any deal for this…

    • +1

Try the AirNZ site then and use the +/- 3 day feature. Departures from Sydney on July 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 all have fares from $1170, depending on when you want to fly back. That seems the best you can do in July.

      • +1

Excellent, thanks for the reply! (We actually want to stay there for three months, eg probably return in October… but we are flexible)

EDIT: huh, Jul 9th to Oct is $1170, that seems pretty sweet! Thanks again…

        • +2

Can't complain at that price and if you select your seats early enough, you have the chance of getting premium economy seats for the Trans-Tasman leg at no extra cost, which makes it even better value!

        • if you select your seats early enough, you have the chance of getting premium economy seats

Oh wow, can you elaborate? (I'm used to seat-selection only happening 24/48hrs before departure, and Premium Economy costing more)

One downside I see is that the baggage allowance appears to only be one 23kg for economy… surprising, every flight I've taken to the USA in the past was twox23kg… but maybe I'm reading it wrong, it was quite convoluted!

        • +1

          @nuchalis:

Maybe I just got lucky, but I got the $844 flights to Vancouver a while ago and I went into the seat selection, to my surprise the MEL-AKL and AKL-MEL flights allowed me to choose Premium Economy for no extra cost.

As soon as you have your booking reference number from AirNZ, you can select your seats on their website. There is also the option to pay extra for what are considered "preferred seats" and exit row seats (be careful with the exit row however, while you do get more leg room, you are right next to the galley so might not be getting any rest).

        • @ejc84:
Do you have any status with Va or NZ or Star Alliance by any chance?

        • @Trance N Dance:

Nope, no status, not even a member of either program yet, still pondering whether it is better to claim the points on Velocity or Airpoints. I think it comes down to the way they have restructured their Domestic/Trans-Tasman fares, that buying a a long-haul flight gives you the equivalent to what would be a "Works" or "Works Deluxe" fare for that leg.

      Hi @nuchalis

The filters are just above the flights so that you can view any flight dates that you want. When you first visit the page they are displaying 'Anytime' for both departure & return dates. Flights are sorted by price, and then departure date.

To view flights that depart anytime after Jul 1st, click on the 'Depart' drop down & select 'Date Range', then choose 1st Jul to 1st Sep (or as late as you want to depart). Then click 'Filter Flights'. You will end up with:
      http://iwantthatflight.com.au/x2SYDLAX-Flights-from-Sydney-t…
which are the flights you want. You can also adjust the return dates, so that it is 1 week after departing, 2 weeks, etc.

Its obviously a balance between flexibility and ease of use - if anyone has any suggestions I am happy to hear them.

      • +1

Excellent, thanks for the reply! Using those filters did allow me to find the flights I found via the NZ site, but if I didn't know the cheap dates already it seems it would be a lot of repeated day-by-day searches?

Eg the ANZ site has a "show three days either side" option that makes scanning around a lot quicker…

PS don't get me wrong, I love your posts here! And your site is awesome in many ways! I'm just a very flexible Cheapest-decides-dates traveler…

        • +2

I think the issue is - when you choose an option from the Depart dropdown, make sure it is 'Date Range' not 'Exact Date'. When you select 'Date Range' then you are shown a calendar and you can click on 1st July and then click on 31st July and you will be shown all the flights that depart in July. No clicking day-by-day :)

I think I have to make a demo video! :)

        • @IWantThatFlight: Yes, that's what I'm missing!

But how do you get the dropdown with "date range" to appear when starting from scratch? It's there on that link you provided, but when I do a search from the homepage it's not there? Eg Here

EDIT: It looks like they are under "More Options, but that's just for a price alert?! So yeah, I still can't find the date range for a fresh search?

        • +1

          @nuchalis: Ahh, now I understand.

From the page that you linked to, go to the top of the page and you will see a blue box with the text 'Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles, United States. 1 Adult. Economy Class' and a 'Change Search' button. Click the button.

You can now enter a new search in, but instead of putting in specific dates, click 'Anytime' from the date caledar. Then click 'Search for Flights' - and now you will be able to choose the filters, date ranges etc.

        • +1

@IWantThatFlight: Excellent, thank you for your patience, you rock :)

      • if anyone has any suggestions I am happy to hear them.

PS minor thing, but I wish there was a toggle-all on/off button on the search refinements for carriers, eg to restrict carrier to just ANZ I had to click on every airline :)

        • +2

Yes - thats a good idea. I'm working on the filters (mobile site) right now, so once I am done with that I'll add that ability.

    • +2

the dates arent random. i think it's sorted by price so cheapest specific date combos at top of list

  • +1

I'm loving Air NZ's aggressive pricing strategy. Nice find.

  • +4

One of the best OPs on OzB. So awesome. I was on a holiday and flying back from Asia a few weeks ago and sat next to a random family who mentioned they had been on two holidays recently thanks to OzB making it affordable for them. V cool.

  • +1

Would it be possible to have a 1-2 week layover in New Zealand (en-route to LA)?

    • +2

Not sure about through OP's site, but it is possible with the multi-stop search on Air NZ site. I found flights on a few dates (ie. ADL-AKL June 5, AKL-LAX June 16, LAX-ADL July 11) for $1391, compared to $1347 ADL-LAX return without a stopover.

      • +1

        Amazing. Thanks for the tip!

    • That is and has always been my biggest issue with online bookings is that hardly any (if any at all) allow you to book a stopover (when available).. very annoying…

  • Great price. Any idea if any European deals (London) are imminent?

  • Great deal rep. Is there any chance of cheap fares leaving at the end of Jun?! Seems to be the only period I can't get =/

    • +1 looking for end of June deals too, are there any rep :o

    • end of June is school holidays !!!

Many people book their end of June flights in July previous year to get best deal by far.

  • Give me a reason to fly to us in high season after aus$ has list so much value.
No, I don't need Disneyland. May fly to EU for a holiday though.

Aussie dollar is so cheap :(

    • Our dollar is worse against the EUR/GBP and things are more expensive than USA in most European countries, so you are better off going with USA. If you want to save money, just eat $1 pizza slices for dinner. Additionally, if you plan to spend any time Canada, we aren't far off parity from then so you are only paying an extra 2-3 cents per dollar there, and again to save you some money, Tim Hortons is a cheap option for breakfast/lunch.

    • +2

you might as well stay at home and save all your money :)

    • we do a lot of ski packages to USA mostly Colorado.

Accommodation & lift tickets are incredibly cheap, even when take our exchange rate into a/c.

      for example.

      COPPER MT COLORADO
Lift tickets from USD$36/day/adult (about AUD$46/day). With this you get up to 4 kids under 13 FREE (when buy minimum 7 days) + get PRIORITY LIFT LINE (like a ski school line, so no q's ever)

      • get access to main village quad chairlifts 15 mins before the public (great on those fresh snow days)

So if a family where only 1 adult skis & 4 kids under 13, lift tickets for 5 of you can cost only USD$36/day or average of USD$7.20/person (less than AUD$10/day)

How do you get these deals ?

You must buy accommodation with it, but it need not be expensive.

A 3 star condo on snow, works out around USD$50/person/night (5 night min). That's for a spacious 3 star, either 1 bedroom for 4 people, or 2 bedroom for 6 people.

Why are prices so cheap ?

      COMPETITION
Within 30 mins drive are other major resorts … Vail, Breckenridge, Keystone + smaller resorts of A Basin, Loveland etc.

There's even a FREE bus from Copper to Breckenridge that goes every 1/2 hour from very early am, to very late pm (last time checked it went from 5am to 1am). Bus does make stops so driving is obviously quicker.

  • Hmmmmmm, canada…. Ski time…maybe next year.

Pizza? No, health is priceless. I would rather spend $150 on the protein powder from aminoz and giti gym everyday.

    • Qantas is putting on more flights to Vancouver esp for next Xmas, but they won't be cheap. Qanats is a HCC, high cost carrier.

Cheapest way to Canada, will almost always be via LAX, unless you want to go via China, but that very long way & often flights don't connect.

USA, especially Colorado will always be cheaper than most Canadian ski resorts, simply due to competition + it's very easy to get from LA to Colorado using Qantas ff pts (12,000 pts + $2 each).

There are 3 nonstop routes from LAX to Colorado, on which you can use Qantas pts.

  • +3

I feel there's going to be a lot more of these fire sales as the AUD:USD rate continues to plummet. It might be cheap to get there but the US is not nearly as cheap to visit as it was a year or two again (the rate was $1.08 when I went almost 4 years ago - its not $0.77).

    • I know… It was 77c like 15 years ago and horrible then !

No chance I'm going there at that rate..

Still a great deal if you Must go though

    • it's all relative.

Accommodation around Disneyland has always been cheap, as there's so much competition.

As AUD$ drops many accommodation deals get sharpened up + what it may mean is, people will still go , but instead of staying 4 star, they might stay 3 star (on same budget)

Maybe the price might not drop, but eg. breakfast might be included, or 5th night free (hotels will look at average stay by Australians & if around 4 nights & they have plenty of availability looking forward, they might offer FREE 5th night-people still spend money in hotel, eg. they might not offer free 5th night & breakfast)

World events (eg. ISIS), rather than the exchange rate, will have far more impact on peoples travel plans/airlines dumping some seats.

  • Rep, any deal to Vancouver around Jun?

  • -1

the savings from shopping in US or Europe pays for the airfare but now that its actually cheaper to shop in OZ.. there's no great savings. designer stuff. infact dedigner are cheapest in oz now with the low currency. a lot of ppl coming shopping here.. the asians stocking up on lv, gucci etc

  • +1

im waiting for a $1200 bris to nyc early dec. the recent $1500 i'm hoping will drop further and i think it will.

    • why on earth do you think it will drop ? It school holidays for some private schools & it's already February, ever if coming home 25Dec, those seats have been on sale for a month now.

  • +2

    anything for dec/jan?

    • yep.

Qantas agents only deal (traditional agents are fighting back)

BNE/LAX return $1777/adult departing certain dates eg. 16, 24, 29-31 Dec, back end of Dec, 10-25Jan.

Not many seats, probably less than 10 on each date, so be a little date flexible if possible.

Qantas are loaded til 25 January 2016 as of today.

you won't find these prices on Qantas website, only thru traditional agents, not thru any online searches.

  • there are some cheap seats, but check dates of travel.

eg. on airnz site now SYD/LAX/SYD for $995

but (below is from their site)

    >
    from $995

Economy, per person, return ex Sydney to Los Angeles. Card payment fee may apply.

    Destination: Los Angeles

    Sale ends: 9 Feb 2015

    Travel period: Outbound 20 Apr - 11 Jun 2015 and return 20 Apr - 6 Jul 2015

    >

Also get the impression from some comments that some people think there are vast numbers of seats at this price.

Airlines generally only put a few seats out on quieter days of the week.

What's a few ? Could be anything from 2 to a dozen or sightly more.

February is notoriously slow month for bookings as people are still paying off Xmas.

  • Same but for Europe July, August, September?.

    • Hi Polak,

Easiest way is to go to the map & choose 'Spring (Jul-Sep)'
      http://iwantthatflight.com.au/world.aspx?dm=16

It will figure out your closest departure airport. If the closest airport is not an international airport (g Albury), then you can manually set your departure airport.

  • what deal could you do to Los Angeles, depart 1/07/15 return 31/07/15. Don't mind which city we depart from in Australia (live in Adelaide, so I assume there will be a flight from the east coast to LA). Thanks
