  • Any idea on the battery life of these?

    • Approximately 7 hours when in docked mode and 5 hours when in tablet mode.

  • +2

I get about 7 hrs with mine doing typical office duties - emails, browser, word processing and light spreadsheeting. This is with the main unit + keyboard battery dock. Very respectable. The unit also recharges very quickly, fully charged in like 2-3 hours only.

    • How far can the screen be pushed backward when used in laptop mode? When I have demo'd many of these convertible designs they never seem to go far enough.

Also reviews say that the tablet surface temp gets very hot under load testing. Have you ever noticed the temp's? I have an older laptop that generates some heat, it might be a nice change for the screen to be hot instead of the base burning my ….s

      • The screen goes back only about 120 degrees or there abouts, you can prob find more details on product page, i don't have a protractor (is that what it's called? haven't used that word since year…6!). This thing can topple over if you use it on your knees and you happen to sit with your knees lower. Very stable when on flat, hard surface.

The nice thing is the tablet can be detached and docked in reverse in presentation mode - but you can't access the physical keyboard in this mode.

The top of the rear section does get pretty hot, I have never have the unit shut down on me with any sort of temperture protection tho (i assume there is some form of this protection built in). But yes, the keyboard and track pad stays cool.

One thing to take care before buying is consider how lacking in ports this model is.
On the main tablet just 1x USB3 and 1 MiniDisplay and power and Simcard. On the dock you get 1 additional (total of 2 USB), 1 MiniDisplay and power.

No SD card reader, no esata. I carry a USB Hub for portable expansion, also use a desktop lenovo USB breakout box (not sure what it's technically called, but basically gives you DVI output, more USB ports etc).

        • Good feedback, thanks.

What is the maximum resolution supported through the DVI cable? Is it still 1920x1080?

  • New version of Lenovo's Helix with Intel core-M out already, and one with an upgraded keyboard out this month

    • +1

I think it will be late Feb perhaps.

Keep in mind this model as listed on the US site is $1899 USD (Approx $2500 AUD inc GST). I'd expect the Core-M to be around this also. (Priced the same spec, albeit ours offered is refurbished).

    • Yeah, that'll be more like $1800+ for this config even with a coupon though.

  • Hmmmm…this one or the Dell XPS 12 from a few days ago?

    • also anyone know how does this compare to surface pro 3?

      • +2

Surface has a better screen resolution, fair bit lighter, better battery.

This has a Wacom over Ntrig stylus (won't bother most), better keyboard dock by far (opinion). Cheaper than the i7 Surface 3 too.

        • I tried to use the stylus, really wanted to like it, but it became too tedious in the end. Easier with fingers and Trackpad. So definitely consider how you would use Stylus and certainly don't expect Surface 3 level precision.

The Helix keyboard is much nicer to type on than the Surface cover for sure, but it is heavier (the keyboard itself).

    • Yes, but by now this is 2 generations old in terms of CPU. That, plus it being a refurb (read: secondhand with prior history of failure), still makes it a bit expensive.

      • That's not what refurbished means. At least not in this sense. If it was used properly they would be scratched and damaged. They are in brand new condition. I think for significantly less than half the current retail price it is very cheap.

        • I tried very hard to find on your website what "grade A+" meant exactly before I posted that comment. I did not succeed.
What does "as new" really mean in this case? Used products can be "as new", so you cannot blame me for assuming it was used. Apple refurbs get new cases and batteries, making them "as new", even though they have been used.

Not trying to be a pain. I am a fan of your store and products. But vagueness when it comes to refurbished does not usually favour the seller. If it's "new but open-box", say so.

          @Make it so:

Hi, sorry I did not mean to offend.

Refurbished are usually listed in grades, or well at least they should be normally.

A+ Means no blemishes and no pixel issues. 100% as new. Either open box, or a minor fault. Also it is usually the manufacturer that has done the refurbishment, and not a 3rd party.
A means possible minor blemish, pixels are not guaranteed. Usually a store return (used).
B means more major blemishes (used).
          C means rough condition. (Used).

We pretty much only ever get A+ as we don't want pixel issues (with our warranty we guarantee it).

@jackkel: Don't worry, not offended. Just that I don't think a deal like this gets the credit it deserves if people are not 100% clear on what it means in this case. I am not fussed about open-box products myself, but would stay away from returns, or worse: ex-repair.
Given that it's new, this deal gets my vote. Especially with the 8GB RAM and large SSD, it's very future-proof.

Hope to see more deals from you guys soon.

        • @Make it so:

I agree, we are trying to do more deals on a regular basis now.

  • This is old model.

Yes, this has already been established.

  • CNET review: http://www.cnet.com/products/lenovo-thinkpad-helix-convertib…

"There's no SD card accessibility at all, so be aware if that's something you'll need. Bluetooth is also missing, and Ethernet is available only via an included USB dongle"

No bluetooth, no SD card expandibility = dealbreaker on otherwise pretty sweet hybrid.

  • Hi OP

I think originally these devices came with 3 yr manufacturer warranty.
As a refurb what is the warranty on this guy ? If it's only one year is there a 3 year option and $$. And if it's RTB is it at my cost ?
And can you advise which digitizer pen it comes with ? Wacom or other ?

    Thanks

  • +1

Very good deal considering how much I paid for this when it came out!

the only gripe i have with it is the screen size… feels a little cramped sometimes…
