  • Great find. Is there a way to upgrade LCD?

    • Technically possible, but difficult to actually ascertain as to what LCD display will be compatible. Also, you void the warranty the moment you crack the chassis open.

      • I think they are only gonna care that you open it if you break it in the process.

I believe some manufacturers and some laptops have those "stickers" at certain points on the inside that once u pull something apart (which you have no choice but to do so sometimes to gain access to what you need), it tears, and if you ever return it under warranty for whatever reason, it indicates to them that you've opened it and may have potentially "bricked" it or damaged it yourself, thus voiding the warranty.

Replacing the display normally requires you to pretty much disassemble the whole thing (don't ask me why they designed it like that) to access the screws that hold the hinges which then allows u to remove the entire display assembly including the hinges (the display itself is normally screwed onto the hinges which are sometimes hidden from "whatever" unless you take the whole thing apart.

Some HP and Acer laptops I've replaced displays and keyboards on in the past have those "stickers". Never worked on a Toshiba before though.

        • I didn't see any stickers of the sort working on a Dell Latitude E4300/4310 or E6xxx series. Then again, these are businesss grade laptops which are designed to be easily repaired. And they're indeed very easy to repair — you just pull out the bezel and then take out about 8 screws. Only 8! (well, maybe more, but it is a speedy fix to repair or replace the LCD panel)

My Compaq Presario on the other hand pretty much required me to dissect the entire chassis.

Stickers should be relatively easy to defeat, just use a heat gun or hair dryer on it until it is soft and pliable enough to peel off.

        • @scrimshaw:

They may not be using those "low tech" stickers anymore on modern laptops I guess, the laptops I used to work on were pretty old, from the 2000-2006 periods, and god were they awful and painful to work on just to replace simple components.

I never had to worry about the stickers tearing as they were all out of warranty, so I never had to think about trying anything to avoiding it, but that heating method sounds like a good method of keeping those stickers in check if they are ever present.

  • other end if the spectrum, was looking at the quad core n3540 powered lenovo g50 for 370$ just for office emailing internet surfing and watching YouTube/ DVDs. looked OK in the shop. think their 15% off lasts until Monday?

    • +1

Kogan has a similar machine, if you miss out. It is a Clevo whitebox.

      • thanks scrimshaw. looks good with better USB ac WiFi and BT le ,but not in until after 26th Jan, and webcam lower res than lenovo, which we would use for Skype. good basic laptop though and so similar looking you'd almost think they were made in the same factory!

      • didn't even realise it had dual band ac wifi! Immediate install of samsung 830 SSD has made it snappier, and it seems to be handling the general day to day computing fine!

Also came with OEM powerdirector 10 and a test 'movie' hung at 1080p HD high bit rate (using standard HDD) not sure if that was processor or other limitations, but rendered fine at 720p so adequate for dvd quality stuff! not bad for a cheap laptop designed for emailing!

(Obviously lost all the OEM software/bloatware on the clean install of windows 8.1 (tricky as, because it's 8.1 with Bing for which there is no .iso file, but managed with a call to microsoft!)

Bought this today, set it up wifi is having alot of issues, it's been around 3 hours since I tinkered with it's settings got the wifi to work but the range is literally only about 10m. Going to give it another shot tomorrow if not going to return it on saturday

    • Have you updated the firmware?

      • Yeah drivers are up to date, everything is updated

    • +1

If it's of any help, I picked one up yesterday and the wifi is fine. No issues for me.

      • No range issues? do you have a dual band ac router or just the regular 2.4ghz bgn one?

        • Good point. I have dual band AC - an Asus N66u. Haven't tried it with other wireless sources yet.

        • @AlanHB: ahh that's probably the issue at hand, the laptops wifi module is designed for a/c dual band routers, might have to head in and buy a new router

        • @Kawaii69: Would be awesome if you could test drive it first to ensure you don't have a flawed wireless card though.

        • @AlanHB: Yeah hahaha going to have to risk it, plus I'm sick of this teltra modem anyways

    • What brand/chipset of wireless is it please?

      • It's intel dual band a/c 3610

I bought this today for $678.30. It is a true bargain. I have been looking for a new laptop for several weeks, and narrowed down to 3 HP's and 2 Toshiba's. I wanted 8GB ram, minimum Intel i5 processor, and 2GB dedicated graphics card…and this one was it! I don't do much gaming, but do watch youtube and movies whilst running other applications so RAM & graphics is important. I've read reviews and comparisons of the graphics card and it will run high end games fine. Obviously an i7 chip with a higher end graphics will perform better, but you'll be paying at least $300 more.
It was under my budget of $800. After lengthy decision making, I chose to forgive it not having a DVD drive/burner. I don't really need it, as burning CD's is rare these days, and I can always do it at work if needed.
The lack of DVD drive means this laptop is 19.99mm thick! it is so sleek, LIGHT, and sexy brushed aluminium finish.
Out of the HP's and other Tohisba I looked at (similar spec except with i7 chip and more expensive), this one looks and feels the best!

It also has 802.11ac wireless LAN card, this is the latest and fastest network on the market today. Although current wifi routers maynot yet be capable of the 802.11ac speeds, this laptop is future proofed for faster wifi internet connection!
Only one other HP laptop I was looking at had this.

Also, setup was a breeze, I did not have any issues connecting to my current wifi connection. User above may had home router/connection issues.

You will not find a laptop with Core i54210U processor, 8GB RAM, 2GB graphics, 1TB hard drive for under $700! if you do, please show me!

the harman/kardon speakers are quite good for a laptop, it's not spectacular, but better than most within this price range.

I need a new laptop. Does this one has a dvd burner?

    • I mean CD burner so I can make a copy of my cd's to play in the car.

Ended up buying this today from JB Hifi after Office Works refused to price match the wireless 1 Toshiba S40 deal because $600 price was after applying a coupon code

  • How the R7 performance when it comes to games like world of Warcraft or Starcraft? Not really into gaming like crysis.

  • How heavy is this laptop?

  • OMG OMG OMG. Just can't afford it :(

  • is this a good deal?

    what is a comparable laptop?

  • I wonder if the HDD is a hybrid model (boots up from a small ssd)? If not how hard is it to swap the 500gb hdd with a SSD drive? Been using SSD both at work and at home, kind of getting used to its boot up speed.

  • +1

I was looking at similar speced laptops but I want to play games. I bought the Acer V3 572g-55t from DickSmith with a $60 off code bringing it to $739. Same CPU/RAM/HDD but the Nvidia GT840 is significantly faster than the AMD R7 M260 and it has a DVD supermulti drive.

  • Does it have removable battery? (for those wondering why, its because I dont want to ruin the battery and I want constant 24/7 plug into power supply. I dont want to remove plug after full charge then plug back in after 0%.)

  • Very very tempted. But decide to wait a bit longer when my old machine beaks down lol.

    What about this one?

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/toshiba/…

Pay $85 more to get i7 and DVD.

  • Thanks op! i actually bought it for $670, $8.3 discount after some negotiating / lying

  • How does this one compare to theses two clearance models at Dick Smith for $574?
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/hot-deals/toshiba-satellite-14-p… and
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/hot-deals/toshiba-satellite-14-p…

    • Pretty good specs, however the cpu and gpu are a generation old

      • I could settle for that if it was worth the price. It would be a further 5% off using discounted wish cards, making it $545.

        • plus there's a $20 coupon code off orders over $99

        • @Kawaii69: Yes, that was including the $20 discount. I think I'll keep looking until I find sub $500. Getting closer.

        • @unity1: New code for $60 off using 60STRAYA

  • when our 5' phone has 2k, the dam 15.6'notebook still has 1366

    • The bigger the screen the higher the rate of defects, apparently. It's much easier to produce a 5 inch 2k display than a 15 inch with the identical resolution.

Can't remember where i read it, but it's got something to do with how the LCD is produced.

Hey guys. Just bought the L50-B05D for 740.00 at Greensborough JB. Initially quoted 673 for the unit but when it came to pay it was 763.30! Dyslexia? Anyway went back and scored it for 740. All good.

  • Can you show us a copy of your receipt?? I bought the s50 and found a dead pixel. Now I gotta go to some jb HiFi that's further away coz I bought the last one. Fail.

  • Bought first one. Dead pixel. 2nd one dead space bar. Fail hard.

  • bad luck for the person with dead pixel, hope you get it sorted out. Thanks OP for posting this deal. After much contemplation I bought one. Luckily mine seems to be fine. I went to Toshiba's website and can't seem to find any drivers listed for this model! Makes me wonder they stopped supporting it? :(

    • I suspect it's a JB exlusive model - you can't find the model anywhere else.

  • Ok thanks. Is there a suitable model we can use to download the drivers from?

    • Check the Toshiba website for a similar model. I haven't tried personally but they'd all be pretty similar.

  • +2

Hey guys can anyone upload the receipt? I want to get the same deal but the deal is expired and the price went up :(

I want to know if I can still buy it for that price if I show them the receipt

    • If it's any help, pre-sale I was able to get the price down to $740 with minimal (ie. zero) haggling.

If you want this specific model you'd better hurry. It was just taken down from the JB website and probably limited stocks left in store. It may mean you'll get a better price though if they're looking to shift them.
