[Re-Edit: Old link expired as of 17/1 9am, but new link still valid]

$100 and $200 denominations are available. It says you can buy up to 10. Whether that is 10 of each denomination, or 10 altogether, seems to be vague.

BIG W eGift Card is valid for 12 months from the issue date.

Since I missed out on the Entertainment Book ones, I was glad to grab these.

Hurry! Limited time offer. Must end on 1 Feb 2015 or until sold out

  • Can I use these to purchase another gift card? Say a David Jones card?

    • +1

      Yes

      • Thank you!

  • Well I bought one, if this doesn't work at Woolies, someone is in big trouble !

    • +4

Yeah and it would be you for buying too much :D

Straight from a woolworths money team member:

We have reviewed the link provided and believe the card on offer is a Big W eGift card.
The Big W eGift Card can be used across all Woolworth’s divisions. This includes Woolworths and Safeway Supermarkets, Big W, Dick Smith, BWS, Dan Murphy's, Masters Home Improvement, participating Woolworths Caltex co-branded outlets, Thomas Dux, Woolworths Liquor and also through our online shopping websites.
A full list of participating stores can be found on our website www.everydaygiftcards.com.au under the ‘About Gift Cards” tab on the right hand side of the home page.
Although we have specific branded gift cards, all of our Gift cards can be used at any of our brands within the Woolworths Limited Group.
    Hope this answers your question.
    Kind Regards,

    Gift Card Team

    • Hi CB, did you just make the enquiry to them? Cause when I go to the website you quote, I can't see DS listed as a participated one.

      • +1

yes i sent an email to confirm and this is what they had to say

i wanted to confirm before i buy 10X$200.00

didnt wanna end up with only big w or something

        cheers

        • I thought Dick Smith isn't part of Woolworths any more?

      • There stock email is a little out of date.

Dick Smith don't accept eGift Cards. I have checked in a few different ones around Sydney CBD and suburbs. They do accept the physical ones last time I used one in November last year.

  • does this have a limit quantity? Doesn't mention atm.

  • "BIG W eGift Card will be emailed to you in approx. 2-4 business days"

  • Seening people who intend to buy $1000s of those cards: Is it only me or does anyone else have security concerns with eGift cards?

I see two scenarios that can easily lead to a total loss:
    * someone hacks into your email account
    * someone sees your screen or your printout with all the details when you part-use a card at a check-out. Then they know everything that is needed to use up the rest of your balance.

I very much prefer physical gift cards, skilled pickpockets that can take one of them off me are quite rare and the card numbers are so much longer and printed smaller that no casual observer would be able to just see and remember them…

Take your egift cards - buy real cards - problem solved.

    • Just trade in for a physical card first time you use it. 7.5% saved. I've used a few eGift Cards with no issues.

Physical card is easier to swipe through at checkout, but contains the pin - a real security problem unless you remove it…

      • How do you trade in for a physical card? Thanks.

        • Go into store, buy Gift Card, pay with eGift Card, as singlemalt72 posted while I was posting.

    • +4

I would have a bigger issue with the fact you are "prepaying" your expenses.

You are handing over money to Groupon for what are essentially vouchers. In turn you will lose interest on your money in the bank and swap it at 7.5% discount and a 12 month usage expiry. Then there's the "time value of money" issue with this.

With gift cards only buy the amount your need or know you will use them. Billions of dollars worth of gift cards go unspent and expire each year worldwide. Gift Cards are the retailers friend as they receive their money "upfront" and makes their accounts look good. I'm surprised retailers don't sell all their gift cards at a permanent discount to encourage usage.

      • +1

I'll spend a thousand dollars in less than a month, a thousand in the bank earning 1/12th of about 2.5% is nothing compared to the 7.5% saving.

        • +1

I'm still getting 5% rebate with ING, with funds at 4% with them (transferred instantly to debit card as needed), spending $200/mth at Woolies.

Like many, I can buy Woolies Gift Cards at 5% off anyway, saving only 2.5% on a maximum of 10 cards. That makes the comparison loss of investment rate 2.5%.

For me, hardly worth the effort, tying up funds (with a small risk), & losing flexibilty to spend tied up funds at other stores, for a couple of dollars a month.

Missing 1 special at another store per month would cost about the same amount per month as this deal saves, in my case.

        • @brucefromaustralia: You get credit card points with buying woolies gift cards though (up to 3 points per dollar with AMEX Platinum Edge), which you don't with the 5% ING cash back.

        • @forumninja:
Good point for those with point paying cards. Got rid of all my rewards cards due to fees. I'm not eligible for any AMEX, as I holiday overseas far more than I work, missing out on the offers :-(

Also beware any overseas transaction costs with some credit card payments, as Groupon is structured to bill from an overseas office! As pointed out previously.

Everyone's circumstances differ. Good deal for those who spend big & better than the normal 5% off available to many.

As mentioned by others, most people will churn through a $200 card in 1 shop (ie use it within a day or so of receiving it), most people (presumably all Ozbargainers) will be using credit cards (with up to 55 days interest free + points of some description to pay) so really the bank is advancing the cash to pay for these at zero opportunity cost to the user = all WIN.

    • I use eGift card all the time now. I reckon it's easier than carrying a physical card. What I do usually is: 1) buy $100 or $200 eGift card, like what this offer has, not $500 one, even somebody got the number and pin, it won't be a big lost. It never happened though. 2) Send my wife the card number and PIN or a tiny screenshot via SMS/iMessage. When checking out, we just open that message (we don't send SMS to each other usually).

The best part is when I need the card very soon, I can get it within 5 min — like I need to add petrol. Oh, forgot to mention, we use wish gift card all the time because I can buy them with 5% discount.

    • There's another security risk with physical cards: your mail being stolen.

My email account has two-step authorisation required. Highly unlikely to be hacked now unless my phone is stolen and that is hacked.

I keep my ecards stored on my phone. It is highly unlikely that a customer behind me will be able to memorise or keep a copy of the numbers required while I use it in store.

  • Can this be used for opal top up at woolies in store?

    • +1

      Yes

    • +1

Yes. It is a payment method.

    • +3

Yes, and Join the Pyrmont Fitness club. Makes Opal saving much more!

      • Yes, i've incorporated that into my monday lunch walk routine.

      • +1

Please explain why joining that club makes Opal saving much more.

      • +1

You should organise a walking train!

        • Actually, this could be replaced by a Pyrmont Ozbargainers meetup — Just line up 100 ozbargainers between the two stops, each with a card with their name on it tapped on at the first stop, and then start passing the bag of cards back and forth and tapping at each end.

    • +5

The "Club" they're talking about is sneaky opal "trips" on the light rail to max out their 8 trips for free travel.

  • thanks bought, my staff card will soon have a new friend next to him

  • +1

$200 ones are sold out now

  • I just bought 2 x $200 so must be back in stock?

  • +1

    Thanks OP. Just bought 10 x $200

  • I've just bought some of the $200 vouchers without problem.

  • Yep same when I went to order the $200 ones were "sold out", so i went for $100 ones. They must have added more $200 vouchers.

  • Just bought $3000 save 7.5% = $225, even bank wont give you that much interest.
Now just need to wait for the usual Woolies Code Stacking for online shopping.

    • -1

So you have multiple Groupon accounts to buy $3000 or does it allow purchases of more than 10 cards per account?

For those who can regularly buy at 5% off (discount Gift Cards from EB & motoring organisations, PayWave rebates, Cashback site deals), it's a $75 saving.

  • How do you redeem eGift cards at Wow? Do you have to key in the numbers and PIN manually at the self checkout (instead of swiping the card and keying in PIN)?

I guess with eGift cards you can store the numbers on your phone instead of having to carry the actual cards.

    • Manual key in number & code.
Explained in eGift Card pdf in emailed link.

    • Did you never use eGift card before? Well, there have 2 different card numbers(in store and online is different) and 1 PIN in a PDF, you can save it in your cell phone or print it out, when you shopping at WWS, you can input the card number and PIN manually at the self checkout…Or you can check out with the shopping assistant, show your PDF and tell them you want to use eGift card to check out, they will help you input the number…

  • Woolies sends out eGift Card links in email. After my links did not show on phone, they said individual links are provided for 3 or less eGift Cards, a spreadsheet is provided for more than 3.

On the phone I needed to install a spreadsheet app to download eGift Cards. Otherwise Woolies can send the pdf as an email if you request.

    • what app do you use?

      • I have a paid app Documents to Go on Android, which includes a spreadsheet. Bound to be free apps that will open .xls files.

  • Can I use this card to reload Reloadable Woolworths Prepaid MasterCard in store or online?

    • Haven't worked at Woolies in a while, but from memory no. It's because when you reload those cards it's either wish cash or EFTPOS. With EFTPOS the POS system treats it basically a cash out (which also stops credit cards being used). Since you can't take cash out of these, I don't think it'll work.

  • Thanks OP
Just order another 5x$200 cards, so they would seem to still be available

    • Same account?

      • Sorry, the word "another" was probably confusing.
I have around 20 from previous deals etc, so only 5 under this deal. Tempted to get more, but I already have about $4000 in assorted Woolworths gift cards.

        • hhahaha 20 geez!

  • Thanks OP, just order 5 x $200 ones and the ecards just arrived by email, excellent!

    • The email from everydaygiftcards.com.au?

      • sorry, I meant to say I logged into my groupon account and the vouchers were sitting there.

        • The vouchers in the groupon account are not the egift cards.
You'll receive an email with a spreadsheet attached which contains links to download the PDFs of the egift cards.

        • @roughana: yes correct~

  • Validity Period
"BIG W eGift Card is valid for 12 months from the issue date", and so towards the end of the validity period, buy real Woolworth gift cards to extend the period in which you can use the credit.
    Security
Regarding security, I buy egift cards in $200 denominations. I only print one out for my wallet, and obscure the PIN. I write the PIN in my personal code on the page. If I lose it, I can easily print it out again. (It doesn't help if someone hacks my email account though)
    Caltex use.
Regarding egift card problems with Caltex etc. I have a real Woolworths gift card in my wallet that was paid for with the egift card. I write down the PIN in code at home and on the card, and scrape off the PIN. It does not help if I lose it, but it will frustrate whoever steals/finds it.

    • great tip. thanks!

      Validity Period
"BIG W eGift Card is valid for 12 months from the issue date", and so towards the end of the validity period, buy real Woolworth gift cards to extend the period in which you can use the credit.

    • Not all caltex works. You need to go to the ones with woolworths attached to it. I tried them at a starmart place and it didnt work.

    • +1

If you keep the card number somewhere safe as well, you can use the remainder of your card with online purchases (e.g. Woolies online) if you lost your physical GC. Whoever steals/finds it can't use it, and you have both card number and PIN which is all that is required online..

      • If only I had been so security conscious before I stupidly left a couple of gift cards in my car and a side window was smashed (Presumably to get at them). I am still beating myself up about it :((

  • I don't see a 'Pin' anywhere in the pdf.
I see a security code, a voucher code and a deal id.

    What am I missing?

    • I don't think it is a proper voucher. The real voucher will be emailed from Woolworths instead.

      • Yeah strange!

      • Yep. I'm sure that it will be the same as previous e vouchers from Big W. "BIG W eGift Card will be emailed to you in approx. 2-4 business days from the domain @everydaygiftcards.com.au. You will not be sent a Groupon voucher via email, only use the BIG W eGift Card for redemption".

        • Ok, thanks.
Everything Groupon sent (and on their website) was just a jumble of confusion. ;)

    • I think the pdf you get will be on your groupon account, not from everydaygiftcards.com.au…
you will receive email from everydaygiftcards, and there is a link in that email, when you click the link, you will get the correct voucher…

  • Hang on maybe not… :\

  • Good stuff OP! Thanks for the saving (:

  • First Thanks and then it would seem to be a silly question:

Why I can't delete the credit card used on Groupon from my details over there?!

  • I wish the had a card like that for the Coles group

    • They do have one, but it is no longer discounted for pre-purchase through the entertainment book. Actually the only pre-purchase sources with discount seem complicated and potentially hazardous. It's called a Coles Group gift card.

      • i know you can buy the discounted coles cards (5% discount only, not 7.5%) through some unions, insurance rewards schemes, or other things like that, but you have to pay for postage and a credit card fee which makes them not worth

      • Yea, AGL has one for 5% discount.

  • Can I use this to buy JBHIFI gift cards ?

    • I believe you can purchase JB-HiFi gift cards from Big W and Woolworths, so yes.

  • This is first time I am ordering via Groupon. Does it take longer for them to delivered via email? Last time I bought straight through Woolworths and was delierved within minutes.

PS: I am aware that it said it will take 24-48hrs at the end of the transaction for delivery and just comparing thye delivery time.

    • Last time it took more than four days for me. Others are quicker.

      • Thanks 'slackme'…

  • Cashback tracking email received from CashRewards. Only 4% of my spend, not the usual 5.6%. Still got to be happy with that as wasn't expecting anything

    • CashRewards shows this message before taking you to Groupon site:
Cashback is currently not payable on Any Woolworths Group Gift Cards purchased through Groupon

The automatically generated tracking email may say there might be a 4% rebate, but I think the above statement will overrule that come payout time.

If Groupon don't pay CashRewards, they won't pay you.

But nothing much to lose by trying ;-)

      • +1

Cashback went from pending to approved now:

        16 Jan 2015 Groupon AUD 277.50 AUD $11.10

My one from October got approved a few months back too:

        31 Oct 2014 Groupon AUD 190.00 AUD $8.55

        Definitely a big bonus.

  • +1

I asked the customer service, they said this ecard can be also used at woolworth. Seems a big value!

  • Can they be used to pay for mobile phone pre-pay recharges?

    • Yes.

  • what do you guys get from BigW regularly?

    • …nothing really :) but I do get from Woolworths, Caltex, Dan Murphy and DSE ;)

      • -2

So we can use the gift card on woolworth or Caltex purchase?

  • Just purchased $1000 worth :)
    Thanks OP!

  • Looks like it might be deal over (but thank you OP - got in today and scored mine).
