Nice looking phone with decent specs. Responsive from what I can see. Not sure if you can get a better spec'd phone for the price atm. Seems to be a Samsung Galaxy S4 clone. The video reviews look good. Very tempted to get this myself. Only white available, black has sold out! Not sure about stock levels but many of their phones are "sold out".

Might want to check out the many problems associated with this phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2437550

Ouch cheers for the heads up :/

    • That's quite a rap sheet

In my whole life i will never trust or buy a chinese phone no matter what price. Warning it can contains virus/spywares.

    • +1

Apple, Samsung, Microsoft - warning it can (and almost certainly does) contain spyware.

      • by spyware you're including backdoor hacks/encryption keys too right? this isn't exactly new

        • +2

There are things you know about the things that you don't know. It's the things you don't know about the things you don't know that should scare you.

        • @rifter:

you don't know that for sure

    • i've got a chinese smartphone and it has been great, so i'll give this a + because even if it isn't great you can't go too far wrong for that price.

The people negging ilikecheap obviously haven't heard of things like CoolReaper or Uupay. Sure it might not affect this particular mobile but there probably aren't many researchers looking into a relatively unknown brand. Not saying things like this only affect Chinese mobiles but you should always be a little vigilant.

Its obviously you guys dont know much about china society, im asian so i know about them. Just sharing what i know. Try google "chinese police buy virus for phone" like this link:

      http://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/1676840/chinese-polic…

Hang on. That article is about law enforcement buying something that injects a trojan into illegally unlocked smartphones. It doesn't tell you anymore than that. It could be used for nefarious activities, lawful interception, research, etc.

I'm not certain what being Asian has to do with anything. Does it give you some special power of knowledge about China society? If I were Korean then do I also have that power of knowledge about China society? Does it work in Tibet, Taiwan, Senkaku Island, Xinjiang, etc also?

Don't I feel like an idiot for defending your earlier post.

Try searching for "how do i use an apostrophe"

  • I've purchased Lenovo phones in the past and found them to be OK.

Biggest problem was finding ROM which wasn't wedded to a proprietary app store, or the Chinese play store. A dev on xda-developers had made a custom ROM which worked quite well.

From experience, I recommend avoiding MTK-based phones if possible. Several performance issues, and no software updates.

    • What would you recommend for 5", <$100 delivered?

        • Phew, close escape! If that had been a red 3315, I just might have bought it on the spot.

You never get over your first.

      • You're not going to get a good phone with those criteria, so recommendations are fairly pointless. It's false economy.

Even a $300 phone can't escape the problems with MTK. So, whether it's friends or down-voting internet anonymouses: unless you don't have the choice, avoiding MTK is better in the long run.

        • +1

What exactly is wrong with MTK phones? You can't just generalise and say they are all bad, as each manufacturer puts a myriad of different screens and other components together to create the end product each with different quality levels.

Perhaps you would also say avoid AMD CPUs at all costs in the desktop market?

The fact is that its horses for courses. There are excellent products available that suit a budget and specific use cases.

        • +1

@Punkboy: You're missing the point, and your analogy doesn't make sense.

Phones with a MTK CPU also have a MTK GPU, and MTK antennae. The CPUs are certainly cheap, but they require that the manufacturer release a version of Android specifically-customised for each architecture. MediaTek generally does not release updates to these, so no security patches or bug fixes. My old MTK crashes and restarts occasionally for no apparent reason, and even though others reported the same problem it will never be fixed.

The GPS antenna that MediaTek integrates performs poorly, even with all the assistive software turned on. Think several minutes for a GPS lock which still can't tell which street you're standing on. And my experience is that the MTK GPU drains the battery a lot faster than other manufacturers. Efficiency lost out to cost here as well.

It may be horses for courses or whatever, but most people want a product built around a solid core, and MediaTek is not particularly solid.

I don't know what your issue is with generalisations, particularly if they are generally true.

        • +1

The GPS antenna that MediaTek integrates performs poorly
          @robertp:

This generalisation seems to hold true for the MTK6582 chipset in this phone. However, not so for the newer chipsets that reportedly have excellent GPS.
