  • Umm there is some weird proposition 65 cancer warning on the HP product page?

    • "(California law requires this warning be provided to California customers)"
I think it might just be a general message for all their products.

    • Proposition 65 warning is essentially on everything and anything. Its just a stupid law.

    • Yeah, I remember seeing it at Starbucks in the US..

  • tempted…but if only it was 10", 2gb RAM…happy to sit and wait for next gen tablets and further reduction in prices…good deal nevertheless…

    • This is RRP, it ain't even on sale now.

  • How responsive does this compare to other tablets like Samsung Tab, Nexus 7, HP Slatebook 2, Asus Memo HD pad etc…

    • +5

Those are ARM based Android tablets. It's really hard to compare Android and Windows 8 tablets without bringing in preferences.

My 2c is, even though my surface pro is way better than Tab S in terms of performance, if I want to use them like a tablet, I find Tab S to be better in many aspects.
i.e. haptic responses when typing, vibration, apps developed for tablet purposes. etc

Also, how well it runs would definitely rely on how much it is optimised as well which I cannot comment much.

I found an article stating that Baytrail's are on par with Snapdragon 800, but it really doesn't say much in terms of responsiveness.

My 2c is, even though I see Windows tablets to hold a lot of potentials, the OS and the app market is not fully mature yet for me to recommend against Androids. i.e. it fills in that market of people who wants something really light that can be used for content consumption yet still doesn't lose its productiveness, but in same way, it's sandwiched inbetween android tablets and laptops.

+1 - well said sir! (claps)

        • Thank you, thank you. (Bows)

Windows 8.1 being a proper PC operating system means it can do a lot more than Android, but it's also precisely that it can do a lot more means it will be less responsive in some areas.

For example, on Windows you have the freedom of using any traditional x86 application you wish, you can run MS Office, you have access to Flash plugins, WebGL support and so on, but the trade off is that web browsing performance may stutter when you run out of RAM and programs might crash because of the 1GB RAM limitation.

If you just want a tablet to surf and play a few games on, an Android tab in the $100~200 range like Asus Memo 7 or ASUS Nexus 7 will probably be more suitable.

      • thanks. looks like the 1GB ram is a major bottleneck, to run win 8.1

        • its fine for day to day tasks, not for gaming.

Santa brought me one of these for Christmas and so far I'm loving it. After delivery and USD->AUD it was around $130. I've taken it into work a few times and already three other people have gone and bought one after playing with it.

The 1GB RAM is not a big deal at all - Win 8.1 seems optimised for this amount of RAM and moving between apps is very fast. Actually the whole thing is very slick and smooth. It is also very fast to switch out of metro mode and into a full windows desktop. I installed Handbrake on the desktop and was able to convert some videos faster than my old AMD laptop could do it.

Yes it has OTG and yes I believe a normal USB hub should work fine if you want to connect HDDs and keyboards etc. Plugging in USB flash drives worked fine.

My only complaints would be that it's quite heavy and I really wish it had an HDMI output although you can buy a cheap USB to VGA video card for $5 off ebay if you want (usb to HDMI is available but costs at least $30). The battery is good but not great. All of these problems are solved by remembering that it only costs $99.

    • Only $5 !? And as it is only USB2.0 it will be too slow for decent HD graphics. You need USB3.

Given the micro-hdmi appears on the cheapest Android tablets, I wonder if the missing port here is a condition of the free Windows license?

      • Missing HDMI support is a pure cost saving thing. Zotac ZBOX with Windows 8.1 Bing edition has HDMI and DVI (so it's not a free Windows license restriction).

        • This tablet does have USB 3.0 but the USB 2.0 adapters seem to work up to 1600x1200 or more anyway. Obviously the adapters aren't going to do 3D graphics or anything.
        • I saw a second hand VGA adapter for $4, but here is a new one for $10 and here is an HDMI one for $29. I don't know how well either of these work.
        • Backward Compatible with USB2.0 (800 x 600)

  • is the audio jack as terrible as reviews say?

Appears so, bluetooth headset is the only proven workaround. Maybe noise cancelling headphones might help (though I thought they are designed to cancel external noise).

      • If it is due to the grounding issues with sound card, noise cancelling headphones probably wouldn't do much.

You can try using high impedence headphones, since usually white noises do not increase as your volume increases, it "reduces" the white noise that you can hear. Though that method usually have its own problems, i.e need to increase volume more on the tablet to get the same decibel level etc.

Or you can get a USB dac (which would probably be overkill and if you are looking for those options, you'd probably be better off buying tablets that are more expensive)

Of course, those things I've said are assuming that the tablet suffers from grounding issues. If it is software problems or anything other than that, usefulness of what I said would probably take a big hit.

  • Meh can't beat my Toshiba encore 8 way better specs and slight cheaper.

    • +3

Where did you get Encore 8 for cheaper than this?
I am genuinely curious, I've heard good things about Encore 8 but all the Encore 8 I've found were $200 mark.

      • If the encore 8 goes under $100 it would have been another TouchPad fire sale lol. Judging from his posting records I think he got an used item (probably a bad conditioned one) from Gumtree or eBay.

        • Probably, even it going on like $150 mark is like half the price that DSE is selling it for.

  • Ok I'm not tech minded but just need something to download onto and then transfer to my Seagate hard drive via utorrent.

    Will this be suitable?

    • Since it is basically a netbook in tablet form, I know it is possible. That being said, I think there are better options involving NAS and stuff which I am unfamiliar with.

    • Yes this would be more than suitable - take note though that there is limited free storage on the device so potentially plug your harddrive in while download and download direct to it.

    • The only problem you'll have is that they charge via USB and they only have 1 usb port, so you can't charge and have a usb HDD plugged in at the same time. People have had mixed results with adapters that supposedly allow charging and data transfer at the same time.

Stop asking if it can play games, im sick of idiots buying iPads for $1,000 and telling me "im a hardcore gamer" they're not designed for gaming. Playing Clash of Clans, or Plants Vs Zombie doesn't make you a gamer.
These tablets are there to extend phone functionality from an emailing/messaging and browsing perspective - the games are just an added extra. If you want to play games, buy this http://www.dell.com/au/p/alienware-alpha/pd and stop whinging

    • +12

The anger is strong in this one.

    • +1

      Why would you buy alienware…?

      • alienware alpha helps you pretend to be a console gamer.. lol… hardcore gamer…

    • PC Master Race eh?

If you play games, and you love it, and associate yourself as it, you're a gamer.

    • +1

My grandpa is a hardcore gamer. Keeps playing solitaire all the time.
I guess I will have to buy alienware for him :(

  • For those that are interested, here are a handful of videos showing gaming in this device.

I'd normally dive on a deal like this, but I've got to stop buying shit I don't need.. Better spent on education..

    • The struggle is real. Although I would question the education bit, halfway through a degree and still haven't really learned anything :P

      • +2

Lies… you learnt that your haven't really learnt anything. That has to count for something.

  • Is this from UK?, do I need a special charger?

  • Hopefully it is proper 1280 x 800 resolution and not a horrible upscale screen like the Pendo Pad 7 posted a month ago, that device was near useless.

    • Depends what you use the Pendo Pad for. As a Plex client it is fantastic, almost unbeatable value.

  • Um so am I reading you all right? Everyone wants a $100 windows tablet in order to play crisis?

    • hrmm actually I want a $100 device I can run dota and spectate my friends playing while my wife bans me from playing….

      • +1

        Sure, Dota… Not r/gonewild?

  • Does anyone know what the difference is between the "7-inch" and the "7-Inch Microsoft Signature Edition"? - the price is the same for both models.

    • +1

MS Signature Edition doesn't have any HP software pre-installed which is a good thing. But Amazon doesn't deliver the Signature Edition to Australia (maybe some other shops do?)

  • How about warranty, http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docn… this page says it doesn't cover a product (if that product is marketed or supported in country B). And i can't find anything in Australia about the stream 7.

  • Just a heads up; There's a very common issue of audio interference when using headphones on this tablet. See this video

  • could kids play minecraft on his ?
