So it looks like we might finally be getting something similar to Netflix based in Aus. The site claims they will have fully functional Android and iPhone apps, allowing streaming to TV via Chromecast or Airplay.

Looks like they'll have a decent range of TV shows, movies and kids shows available for $10/month, with no ads and no lock-in contracts and currently a free 30 day trial if you pre-register your interest.

This could be a decent alternative to Getflix if they have enough relevant content. Will be interesting to see how it progresses if nothing else. Maybe just an attempt to compete prior to Netflix's arrival?

  • Great deal. Netflix also still works. Hopefully there will be more competition in Australia. It's already forcing some of the local companies to become more competitive.

Getting this error when trying to play a movie:

"Sorry, an error occured playing this video. Please try again.

    Error Code: A19"

    Anyone else?

EDIT: Just tried it using the Android app instead and it's working.

    On an unrelated note:

I don't really like the idea of streaming; it just seems like a waste of bandwidth. If you want to watch it again you have to download it all over again. Also while streaming, you have to ensure no one else is downloading stuff on the home network. And you also have to deal with buffering throughout the movie (considering average download speed in Aus).

Streaming offsite con tent is t.he futur

      e …

    • I think its their server issue. Playing (streaming) seems to be hit and miss.

    • I have the same error
"Sorry, an error occured playing this video. Please try again.
      Error Code: A19"

contacted their support which advice me to do a few things but stil not working with my PC. did you find out what was the problem?

      • No I haven't solved the problem, but I'm assuming it's a permissions/security issue on my PC. I tried it on several other computers and they all worked fine.

EDIT: Ok, this is weird. I hadn't tried it since yesterday, but I decided to try it again after typing this comment and it worked.

        Maybe they fixed the issue?

        • Ok. I will try again tonight

  • Seems ok. Quality is as good as Netflix and Hulu, though it is a little prone to stuttering and buffering unfortunately (neither of which UNBlockUS suffers from when watching Netflix or Hulu - 100/40 2TB NBN user here). It is the opening weeks though. Content is an ok mix of Netflix, Hulu and other U.S. Affiliate networks, with a smattering local ABC. If you are already a subscriber to Netflix and Hulu I don't think there is quite enough here to grab it as well (though Transparent is awfully compelling, if torrents aren't your thing or you're intersted in paying content creators and providers their due). And then again, it's only $10.

It's a nuisance there isn't a native ATV app, and that it essentially ties up an iPad in our house to use the iOS app instead.

Thislaunch is pretty well timed, as I dismantled my FTA aerial this weekend. We're now 100% stream TV only. I watch the cricket via the Cricket Australia App, and all our other TV is Netflix/Hulu/AppleTV etc.

All in all, I'll give this free month a go, may even keep it around for awhile after that. Seeing the content that is on here makes it all the more interesting to see what content Netfix AU have garnered.

    • How is the buffering on the Cricket app? You are lucky to have NBN..

      • The CA app is fantastic, even over entry-level NBN networks at my in-laws.

I've decided to keep Stan around for a tad longer, 99% due to having Better Call Saul (BCS) on there. Like I mentioned above, if you already have Hulu/Netflix there isn't enough points of differentiation to make Stan worthwhile. Though it is only $10 I guess, which I'm happy to pay for now to watch BCS and Transparent on.

Who knows, they might pick up some more content in the coming months that make it worth keeping beyond this season of BCS? Roll on Netflix AU, too: let's get this content streaming train really rolling.

  • I'm going to wait until Better Call Saul comes out before I get my free 30 day trial!

  • Native TV app please and then I'll have a look

To which tribe does your TV belong?

      • An app on WiiU, PS3, PS4 or my Sony Blu Ray would work for me. Or a combination of the above.

Sick of the quickflix app staring at me from these platforms with its dead eyes.

  • any idea if there is a way to download the apk so i can install on my amazon fire tv? cheers

  • I don't really know much about Stan, as the website isn't very informative. Do you pay for any content once you sign up for this service?

    • if read a bit in the FAQ section or go through this post, then you would get your answer. And if you dont know about streaming services like netflix, go onto a search engine or wikipedia

  • Stan just charged me $1 on my credit card even though I unsubscribed on the same day of registering? Any idea why?

    • +1

Probably a token amount they deduct from your card and will be refunded once cancelled. A lot of companies will do that when you trial a service with a credit card.
