25/1: Stan has officially launched. Start your 30 day free trial today (please be aware a credit/debit card is required upon trial sign up). So it looks like we might finally be getting something similar to Netflix based in Aus. The site claims they will have fully functional Android and iPhone apps, allowing streaming to TV via Chromecast or Airplay.

Looks like they'll have a decent range of TV shows, movies and kids shows available for $10/month, with no ads and no lock-in contracts and currently a free 30 day trial if you pre-register your interest.

This could be a decent alternative to Getflix if they have enough relevant content. Will be interesting to see how it progresses if nothing else. Maybe just an attempt to compete prior to Netflix's arrival?

The above comment is "valid" in the same way, but doesn't make it a good or fair comment either.

      windows phone's are kinda irrelevant.

      • +3

Not to someone who uses the service. I'm very happy with my windows phone and I don't think there is anything wrong with saying that you don't want to outlay funds for a service that can't be used on the gadget you own.

        • -5

I never said you should subscribe i said windows phones are irrelevant meaning nobody cares all that much about them.

        • +5

          @holden93:

I disagree with you on that comment I think there are a lot of people that do care about windows phones.

I guess with my second sentence I was commentating in general to all the above critics who negged me for simply stating that without a windows phone app the service is not useful or a waste of money for me.

        • -7

@barghunt1: only people who were stupid enough to buy one of them.

@holden93: Your comment is kinda irrelevent

          Truth hurts don't it :P

  • Sounds interesting, thanks OP!

  • Any info on if this will play on xbmc/kodi?

    • Via airplay perhaps? Bit hacky though

The first effective step towards reducing the need for pirating that I have seen in Australia since 1997

  • +9

Until there is an Xbox One app I will continue with Netflix and Hulu.

    • -8

I stated above that the service wasn't useful for me because there was no windows phone app available. I got a lot of negs for that comment I hope the same doesn't happen to you.

    • Yeah I'm in the same boat given it's where we stream most of our shows from. Hopefully they're in discussions with other companies to get native Apple TV, Xbox, PlayStation etc applications. Personally I find that preferable to streaming from a mobile device, although mobile playback and streaming is definitely appreciated.

      • Considering there's a quickflix app which no one uses, I'd say it's not too much effort to set it up?

    • +2

With Microsoft implementing Universal Apps, companies should definitely be implementing a Microsoft modern app solution. Hit Xbox, Windows and Windows Phone in one go - it really has to be a no brainer for an entertainment company.

      • +1

I really hope this and windows 10 improves the availability of apps on windows phones. If I liked apple products then gadgets wise things would be easier.

  • Anyone got a list of what the potential standout content (or exclusive) will be?

  • When can I start using it ?

    • No date listed on their site unfortunately, but Netflix is expected around March so I imagine these guys will try to get a jump on them and maybe launch late Feb?

      • +1

Gizmodo says around the end of January.

        • +4

I probably should've read the article I linked hey? :-P Cheers.

  • Fingers crossed an Apple TV app follows soon too

    • +2

Fingers crossed, an app for a bunch of devices is soon to follow.

      Reading this: http://www.businessinsider.com.au/stan-streaming-service-aus… ,

It sounds like they understand the technical limitations of getting content to us, so I'm hoping they would have also factored in the devices people would be watching things on. If they have enough customers banging on about how they want an app on their Windows Phone or Wii U or whatever, I'm sure they'll be willing to consider it.

I'll be signing up for this. No contract, so I can always leave if I don't think they're up to scratch.

      • I've personally grown really tired of Apple TV updates with apps only added for US, UK or other parts of Europe markets, several years now without a single dedicated AU channel!!

  • i wonder how many devices can watch at the same time…i have multiple tv's and tablets…how many can be used concurrently??

    • Maybe it'll have pricing similar to neflix? Cheapest plan can have one device at a time, for a few dollars more you can use multiple devices?

  • +2

Even in a worst case scenario, it can't be worse than Presto, right? :/

  • I'll give the trial a go. If it sucks, it's no skin off my nose, although I'll probably keep my netflix subscription due to the larger library.

OS Netflix subs will be banned over next month or two

    • +9

Oh cool, didn't realise we had someone from Netflix's management on here. Thanks for the info.

      • -5

No worries, thanks for the sarcasm… Btw people are getting banned already - not speculating here buddy!

        • Cool story.

        • For my own interest, can you point to some forum posts where they are 100% sure they are being banned. So far if someone says it doesn't work now, it's because they haven't set the static routes.

          @pointless comment:

I've been following the same threads on WP for while and still there's nothing that shows blocking DNS service IP's is currently happening. It all seems like a bit of a media beatup with Netflix soon to land.

        • @TZK: maybe im wrong , i dont understand all the techno babble , was thinking of getting US netflix and a few mates said dont bother as landscape is changing quick amd soon….i though tthey were just cancelling Os based credit cards

        • @pointless comment:
So a newspaper article (that's already been deemed a "beat-up" article), and a WP link ABOUT said article?
Not one person in that WP thread has had issues, and even in there they cite official responses denying the move!!

And for another thing, Netflix accept other payment methods besides cr cards - Paypal & iTunes subscriptions are 2 I know of for a start.

        • +2

@Linkwick: like i said, maybe im wrong!! Im gonna bow out of this convoersation coz i really dont care that much about being right all the time!! I thought that they were weeding out OS subs coz a few ppl told me!! At least i started a lively discussion!!

          !!

    • how do you know this? I am also interested to know how they have worked out the users doing this

      • Not entirely sure but i reckon Cc details - they have been ignoring OS subs for a while but they need to channel revenue to new markets so i guess they hope that people will simply sign up with their local content providers

        • +1

If the Aussie Netflix price is $10 or less I'll sign up locally for it and keep using a smart DNS service to switch regions. I'll bet that nearly all of the content on Stan will be able to be accessed in another Netflix region, e.g. Better Call Saul is Stan's big promo flagship and it will be streaming from UK Netflix the day after it airs in the US (so they're saying anyway)

        • Well that'll have exactly zero effect on me paying via US iTunes a/c.

          Stop Torrenting And Netflixing

        • @Infinite Monkee: Not that we can torrent much anymore anyways. PB shut down and OldPirateBay.org isn't quite the same. Not sure which ones to trust that show up on torrentz etc. Some will be really slow and take a long time or incomplete. Hate it when a really large file only got to 99%.

I tried to find Mentalist but just think I'll get the S1 to 6 boxset from JB for $85 or so. Have 1 to 3 and seen 1 to 4. Could have watched it on Nine & Foxtel but wasn't in sync with it. One of those shows you have to watch chronologically.

Don't think Stan will have Mentalist? Didn't see it on their annoying two layer site. Got Nurse Jackie but don't think that's any good. Drug addicted nurse in NY sounded good for first season, not sure how it goes after.

        • @adamren:

Sure piratebay was nice but kickass has everything you need.

I don't generally torrent though, usenet is better.

        • @samfisher5986: Thanks, will check it out.

    • +1

It is rather bad. Does anyone know the thinking behind the name (besides the amusing ones already mentioned)?

      • +2

When I first saw it on the cricket ground (AUSvIND @ MCG digitally on either side of the wickey and slips) I thought it was yet another freaking health insurance brand. Or bupa rebranded. Then the next day I saw they had ads on the boundary fence.

Pretty bad name indeed. The blue and the typeface does not connote new TV streaming tech company at all. But I guess the TV screen with V antenna and film scroll with sprockets thingy on edge is a bit dated and cliche. They could have started with Stan TV or even Stan.TV and we'd understand straight away and then drop the TV part after a year or two.

'Hey I saw this thing on Foxtel the other night'
'Oh yeah, well I saw this thing on Stan today!'

Doesn't sound right. Isn't is the lead character on American Dad? Sounds gay.

      • +2

Who knows…bosses son? Or just some sh1te name an over payed and under talented marketing dept came up with.

  • +14

Prediction: $10 will be a base price and will only include about 200 really old movies and TV shows. Latest/Recent release movies will be able to be streamed but will cost $6.95 each. It will use a silverlight app to play movies and won't work properly on anything but IE. iPhone, Android, Chromecast, Apple TV will be promised as 'coming soon' for at least 12 months after launch. Few people will use the service. Netflix will get all the business. In June 2016 stan.com.au gets acquired/merged with Telstra's movie offering.

    • +2

      Why so cynical?

Have a read - looks like they're on track to provide a service that will, for the most part, be well received.

      • +3

That's a re-hashed press release from a company (Gizmodo/Business Insider) about a company (Stan) with the same parent company (Fairfax).

        Hardly a reliable source.

    • +1

I could see this if they were the only company around (see Foxtel). But they now have Netflix right on there doorstep. It would be nearly suicidal to not copy the Netflix model as close as possible. If they do pull this crap, at least there's no contract and Netflix as an alternative.

  • +3

Hmm nice for no-lock ins. But no ads, yeah right! Maybe for the first 6 months and then there will be some 6 second ones before each streaming. Maybe from Vine or something, and after the outcry dies down, it'll be upped to 15, then 30secs by 2017 or so.

It's in the business model, they've planned for it I bet.

    • +3

Yeah I don't trust Fairfax, they autoplay & insert ads into everything.

Foxtel starting off as "Ad free tv", now they're just as bad.
Oh well there's always trusty channel BT adfree

      • +2

Very true, Foxtel piss me off with so many ads now. It's almost criminal. What's the point of 'pay' TV if you're getting commercials, the things that pay for the programming. It's just greed and they get away with it because we take it.

If only we could rally to organise a mass boycott, a divest all on the month before they do their NewsCorp and Telstra quarterly or annual reporting we might get them to wake up and listen.

If the saw a dip in say 5% of subscribers or say 50,000 we might get somewhere.

They'll fight back with 'it pays for new programs etc' or that customers like them somehow. Or that it messes up the schedule because now shows only run for 20minutes instead of 30 with ads.

So who's in for cancelling Foxtel on the same day and just using FreeView HD and Stan etc? What's BT adfree?

        • +1

I'm not trying to pick a fight, but what particular reason do you have for using foxtel? Is it the sports channels or a lot of stuff you watch you can't get on FTA?

          Just curious.

        • +1

@Mobe1969: Nah no reason to think that, I respect analysing decisions, so don't feel like it's a fight Mobe ;-p

Follow motorsports, and a bit lazy (or the quality of streaming I've seen isn't good enough or reliable, plus I just think it's silly to use copper wires to stream, or even fibre (if I had NBN) when there is and should simply be the old school method of radio/cable TV). If I streamed MotoGP, F1 and the ocassional IndyCar and maybe the occassional and least boring non-oval NASCAR races I'd easily top 500GB a month, nearly every month. Practice, quali and races. And other views. Plus testing etc. And the news shows focusing on these progs like on SPEED (which Foxtel deleted and now it's all on Fox Sports 4 or 5, whatever number they're up to).

The occasionally 'trashy' (and usually always 'reality') TV I watch is on Arena (I can't help but not watch train wrecks like Housewives and Million Dollar Listing etc).

Plus a big A&E fan. The Vegas guys are great entertainment and learn a thing or two on antiques and cars etc. Rick's Restorations, Count's Customs, Pawn Stars etc. I should just get the DVDs but I only watch them once and it takes years for the box sets to come out.

Not sure if we can get Arena and A&E online anyways. I know Discovery is available on Fetch and others, but I like to just turn the TV on and not require a computer in the way.

What do people do when their Internet is down or slow? Or computer requires an update from Windows or a scan. Or get a virus. Or HDD fails? ;-p

        • @adamren:
OK thanks. Yeah I watch some of those (Nascar for example) but I just watch that on FTA (One HD), which I just record and watch (and skip adds). I admit I think there is definitely more coverage on foxtel for the motorsports (especially with qualifying coverage etc), but I couldn't justify the price per month for it. And I agree on the downloading issue with the size.

That optus unlimited cable offer with fetch (including a lot of the foxtel package in it) would sort that too I guess, quotas and some foxtel.

        • @Mobe1969: Yeah One HD was good sometimes, but they'd sometimes mix it up and cut the interviews off etc. Got frustrating not knowing.

Might look in to that Fetch TV with Optus, just don't like Optus much or having to leave a computer and Internet on pretty much 24/7.

If Mercedes dominate again next year and Riccardo doesn't look like he's going to win the championship I'll cut back on live and just watch recorded stuff like you and FF>> ads.

      • +2

Adds are one level of woeful. But I just can't take the awful station logos and watermarks OVER THE TOP of the actual shows. Foxtel is (or was) an abomination for this. Then the FTA stations started it too. That was when I stopped watching TV and just got DVDs and then blu rays.

        I effing HATE station logos.

        • +1

          You me same Mobe.

Worst is APAC and covering up stuff on the actual broadcast like a person's name and title etc. I just have to change the channel. Whoever runs these channels mustn't be too smart or watch it themselves.

They're so brainless, they have one job to do, give the full picture! I also hate when they rebroadcast US produced stuff like Nightline and 20/20 and they don't move their stupid logo on Nine or Sky to read the overlays (forget the technical term for the digital logo thingys they put up). Or a US version of a 60Minutes story, they don't run it through and time it like they would do with Closed Captions (ABC does it really well, they adjust it when there is something on screen but I think they all use Red Bee Media now so it'd be the same, not just ABC)

        • +2

          @adamren:

Ugh, that is so bad. I so do not miss cable tv…

The other annoying thing they'd do is them popup adds for their own shows down the bottom too like "New episode of Water Rats Monday", with flaming graphics. Goodness they are self destructive idiots. I nearly had apoplectic fits trying to watch some show I liked, and have that popup. So I stopped. I don't mind it so much on sports as you already have on-screen graphics (unless the graphics blocks something important). But a movie or TV series - No EFFING WAY!

  • +2

Thankfully we are getting a free trial so none of us have to be tricked into buying what I'm quite sure will be a bad service.

There is just no way we are going to get a service similar to Netflix. Netflix is $11 AUD a month when converted. This service is $10 a month.

My estimate is they will launch with a huge backlog and with all the latest shows planned. After their initial launch they will start wanting to make a profit and will shrink the backlog and only have some new shows.

This is simply because they know that the majority of people will have no idea if stan is good or bad and rely on media reports and initial reviews to choose for them.

Then there's the fact that I really doubt we'll get real HD and no ads all for just $10 a month.

Just look at the cost of bandwidth in America compared to Australia, for an Australian only service to be created with Australian servers, there is no way it can be comparable to Netflix.

    • +1

Wonder if ISPs will change to unlimited and unthrottled for like something crazy $200/mth. Download as much of the backlog as you can and store it. Then cancel Stan or change Internet back to normal $50/m ;-p

Automate downloads to coincide with off peak periods.

Agree with biz costs and service compared to US.

      • +2

My friend lives in Spring hill Brisbane and they just got NBN. He is paying unlimited internet with TPG for $60/month.

        • +1

Groan. Wow that would be nice. I'm 5km from the city and aren't even on the NBN plan. Not in a marginal seat I guess.

        • Nice! Haven't looked but do they have different tiers of speeds? I'd say the $60 is the slower one not the top end top speed full version of it.

Not sure about TPG too, iinet and a few other ones but smaller care about their service and customers. Like not cowtowing to MPAA and other bullies to hand over customer data to sue them for downloading movies/music etc.

Wonder if that area is a TPG property only or they have competition. Think TPG said they were going to do their own fiber stuff in Sydney and other major cities.

      • +2

Not sure if you know but Optus has unlimited cable and TPG has unlimited ADSL2/NBN.

I'm sure Stan will be like netflix, very difficult to download from and much easier to do it in less legal ways if you want to store it.

        • +1

For all the apple bashing people do (including me), at least I have no issues downloading TV shows or movies from the iTunes store in the morning (off peak) and play them to my TV when I'm ready. Not st(r)eaming at night when everyone else is using their bandwidth.

        • +2

          @Mobe1969:

iTunes is great if you are rich :)

I think the only fair way to sell movies/TV Shows outside of the cinema is with a monthly fee to a huge backlog.

Paying $33 a season for Game of Thrones is crazy. I've put that money to better use… 19TB of storage and counting of media on my HTPC :)

        • @samfisher5986:

19 TB of storage and counting of media

jaw drops WTF. I can't even begin to think of what to say but my media would barely hit 1TB.

Is that all just visual? Ripping library audiobooks totals to over 80 titles, maybe over 200 hours. Probably 100GB. But that's around 20%

There needs to be a 64GB thumb drive meet up and swap club ;-P If only I knew you liked non-fiction books I'd swap them all for the GoT as I am thinking of watching that. Save me time and money downloading it, vice versa.

        • +1

          @adamren:

10TB of TV Shows, 9TB of Movies.

I don't have enough storage really. I have 2800 movies, I would love for them to be 5GB videos but they have to be 1-2GB due to lack of space. I only get highly rated movies at 1080p.

        • @samfisher5986: Far out. Have you seen 2800 movies? How many are DVDs? Don't think I've seen or really liked more than 100 movies.

Maybe if the studios released a 100 movie box set on 20 or 40 DVDs from the 40s to 60s I'd get it when it's discounted and reduced to $100 or so. The era up to the 70s was pretty good, now most movies today are silly.

        • +1

          @adamren:

Its not about seeing all of them or anything, they are all in digital form.

          Think of it this way.

I feel like a horror movie tonight, oh look I have 300 movies to choose from.

I feel like watching a Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, oh look all his movies are available.

          Otherwise it would be:

I want to watch a movie, lets spend 30mins googling, then 30mins downloading or going to the video store to watch it. I then might get 10 minutes into the movie and hate it, but I paid money or spent time looking for it….

        • +1

@samfisher5986: So, what's with the 2800 movies? You paid for those right? Confused.

The instant gratification might be cool, but I kind of like the wait.

There is some interesting research about happiness and delayed gratification, being made to wait you savour the moment more and when you discuss the future and anticipation of the event it fires up the brain and hormones etc.

But that's just me. Though I'd like that instant access to books without having to go to a library, but I like reading a lot - so I can understand then now how you are with movies. At last count I have over 2000 books easily ;-p

        • -2

          @adamren:

No didn't pay. Unfortunately because Netflix is still missing a lot of content at the moment I don't see the point in having a Netflix, Foxtel and Amazon subscription, and still be missing out on plenty of movies and TV!

You''ll have to explain this instant gratification theory to me I don't really get what you mean in relation to already owning movies.

Obviously movie cinemas are different, and I still occasionally go to those.

        • @samfisher5986: Wish I could find the book and the articles I read about it but this might help https://duckduckgo.com/?q=benefits+of+delayed+gratification

It's kind of like developing patience, and savouring the wait. Like when you go on holiday, you plan it and book it etc and talk about it and look forward to it.

Studies show, the more you talk about the anticipation of something the more you enjoy it than if you hadn't.

Edit: ah here it is, found it. http://trove.nla.gov.au/book/result?q=Happy+Money

Elizabeth Dunn & Michael Norton. Pretty clever research. Highly recommended. Not a long read or hard.

There ought to be more copies. http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/171464141?q=Happy+Money&c=book

        • @adamren:

Your right but there isn't exactly an alternative.

Video stores rarely have the movie/TV Show you want, especially in bluray quality.

iTunes etc also has quite a small catalogue.

The only solution is to just not watch many great TV Shows and Movies because they can't be achieved with delayed gratification.

There is a lot more gratification in having what you want when you want it, and then being able to use all the extra time you have to do something else. Life is too short to purposely create delayed gratification.

        • @samfisher5986: Yeah, but life is too short to not be happy now.

Give it a go, I don't do it for everything. Obviously time sensitive deals you don't do it for those, but mix it up, every now and then. Gradually increase it.

Give what a go? Mix what up?

Your saying I should go to the video store and rent a bluray?

        • @samfisher5986: Or buy the DVD but don't watch it straight away, savour the purchase. Think about it and talk about it. Keep it by the TV and then after about 3 or 4 days watch it.

You'll have to resist the temptation, and when you finally do watch it, you should, according to the research, enjoy it more. Read the book.

Mix it up as in, do it sometimes rather than quit cold turkey, get in to it gradually, it's a lifestyle change. So see how it goes.

Sounds interesting but I don't think I could convince myself to do it ;)

    • Netflix uses amazon cloud service and will use the same for aus as well.. Stan could use the same..

Perhaps they will, but I don't think that changes much.

Stan is a new service only for Australia, the amount of initial money they have to pay would be insane. They could use Amazon's Australian cloud service, but all their staff and other expenses will be in Australia.

My point is this is too good to be true, I don't trust the people behind Stan to be playing the long game. The only way this service can be good is the long game, and that means Stan aren't going to be making the money they want for years. I think they are too greedy for this.

They can just as easily wait 2 months and slowly put ads and reduce catalogue etc.

        • true..the population base is too low v/s netflix..and netflix has much greater financial strength.. to be honest, i am not sure why these guys are wasting their resources? If all the networks had formed an alliance together, then it would have been formidable against netflix

        • @stockastics:

Because they want maximum profit, thats how these companies work in everything they do which is also their downfall.

        • @samfisher5986: Fairfax has been a disaster since sometime..

Re Netflix blocking - could it be just rumours spread by interested parties to make people start thinking of alternatives? I think it's a bit unusual for Netflix to have to actively deny such rumours…

So Neflix DNS blocking is completely false?

      • +3

Just doesn't seem to be substantiated as yet.

      • Yes it is false.
