  • Only good for those signing up with new accounts? (hoping to get my subscription extended by 6 months for one of my PCs)
EDIT: works for those already using mcafee who have accounts there - log in and get 6 months free.

  • When will this promotion expire?

  • Sorry if this seems negative, but when I got the free McAfee with my brand new out-of-the-box Dell desktop PC running Vista, browsing the internet was amazingly slow. An ages old Pentium II on the same internet connection was doing it many times faster. After several headaches it turned out to be the pre-installed x-months free McAfee software. Microsoft even acknowledged the problem in their knowledge base. As you can imagine I didn't hesitate to completely uninstall the thing, and when McAfee came knocking for me to sign up for their paid subscription I added them to my spam filter.

I personally prefer the lack of any antivirus/internet security programs (including Windows Defender) as not only does this help to free up system resources but I also like to think I know how to be cautious. Plus if you are ever concerned you can just load up the free Malware Antibytes or AVG.

Even if you are cautious with how you use the internet, it is prudent to run a security suite in my opinion.

      • voted the offer, though I won't be signing up myself since I ordered a 3 user Kaspersky license recently.

Avast is free :| why would I pay for antivirus or bother with McAfee

Avast is really good indeed. Together with windows firewall, i think it's enough for any home user.

  • Mcafee is good but takes up too much space.. Eh i like it :) signed up for 6 months

    Doesn't work on Windows 7….

    • it works on my windows 7 ultimate RTM without any problems, which version you running?

Microsft Security Essentials is where it's at these days, great for the home PC. Can't find a fault in it so far (not great for a corporate environment though, that's what Forefront is for).

    • yeah… could some one tell me how mcafee is different from MSE? How is this extended trial program better than a free for all program?

  • I removed Windows and installed Ubuntu four years ago, and I haven't had a virus since. But I'm sure you all know about Ubuntu and are going to try Ubuntu 9.10 when it comes out in a week… aren't you?

    • Ubuntu is great, I use it on my net-book. The reason I don't use Ubuntu on my desktop is that I don't think WINE will run games based on direct-x.
