      • probably gone by now.

        • Ordered mine yesterday arvo and picked it up this morning. I did see them carrying another two to the front counter while i was there so they prob sold a fair few i would guess.

I just cant see a good reason to pull the trigger. Bought myself a new laptop and oneplusone… if i hadnt bought the laptop i would have purchased this.

  • Got one after resisting a couple of days…
Now have to think of what to use it for…

  • which one is better, this or the $199 tab 4?

  • +1

I picked up two today - very impressed. Came with Android 4.3 out of the box, with a 468MB OTA update required straight out of the box. The whole device is a bit heavier than I was expecting, but also feels very solid. I actually like the screen too. It's not any more 'yellow' than any other device I own. The screen is sharp and vivid - it's not quite as bright as I would like, but it looks very nice indoors.
I'm typing on the keyboard now… and it feels good. Just like a small netbook. The trackpad is also very useable, and all the multi-tought gesture support works very well. The tablet feels fast too.
At the end of the day, this is under $200 for a 64GB name-brand tablet with above-average specs.
The only downside I am finding is the damn proprietary cable. Why they just didn't include a USB adaptor or cable is beyond me. It's sad in a way, this tablet could've been a real hit with a few small changes.
For me (and my parents) though, it's really very good value for the money. If you can find one just buy it. If you don't like it I'm sure you'll be able to recoup your money if you sell it.
If anyone has any questions please ask, I'm happy to help :)

    • Is it compatitable with tegra exclusive titles like half life 2 etc

      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nvidia.val…

      • No it's not. I've noticed there are a few apps that aren't compatible with the slatebook X2. Eg, Google keep won't install WTF? I'm not sure if it's because it's not a phone, or is due to the android version. There is a separate Tegra Zone app. I'll check that later for HL2.

        • I checked through the Tegra Zone app - it just links back to the play store so HL didn't install through it either. I wonder what the probelm is? I did a bit of reading which suggests that if you root the device you could force install a lot fo these apps.

For anyone interested about battery life, I read a few reports of this tablet draining battery overnight like crazy (30% or more being drained overnight). Last night at 930pm my tablet had 100% tablet battery and 87% in the base. This morning at 0530 the tablet had 100% and the base had 81%. So that's not too bad. It's a bigger reduction in battery than you'd see form an iOS device, but it's nothing bad IMO.
Also, I can't say anything about the overall battery life yet, but I do notice that the base (keyboard) battery seems to dwindle fairly quickly when using it (you can see the % lowering as you are using it). However, you can set the tablet to 'Maximum performance, balanced and save battery' in the settings. It comes out of the box on Maximum performance. I've switched to balance, although this doesn't appear to be that different to Maximum expect it limits FPS in games to 30fps.
…Speaking of which, I played WoT Blitz on the tablet last night - it worked very well. I got lower FPS than my iPad Mini 2 (avg 38 vs 58), but the game played very well, and the tablet didn't get any warmer than my iPad Mini 2 does.
So my impressions with the slatebook are still very positive.
          /ramble :)

        • @S3ISOR: Almost laughably, Microsoft Office Mobile 'isn't compatible with your device' :/
At least Google Docs work fine.

        • @S3ISOR:

You could try changing a few settings to improve battery drain. What I do with my Android tab is disable location services and set Wi-Fi to never be on during sleep. I don't know if those settings are in jelly bean though.

        • -1

          @S3ISOR:
Not the tablet's fault. It's also not compatible with a Google Nexus 7.

It's probably set to not be compatible with tablets and only phones… If you sideload the APK it will probably work OK.

        • @Shonky: Thanks, I'll give this a try tonight. Any suggestions where you get APKs from - like a repository? (If not I'll google it at home)

        • @S3ISOR:
          http://globalapk.com/free/19341-microsoft-office-mobile-v150…
          Careful where you click….

Edit: Works fine on my Nexus 7 from a quick play.

        • @S3ISOR:

Personally I always try to download it directly from play store using this site. http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/

        • @Shonky: Thank you, this worked fine for Office and Google Keep. Office only works in portrait mode though (probably why the play store says it isn't compatible)

    • what is the use of the cable? can you still use it without the cable?

      • The tablet doesn't need the cable to function, at all. A USB cable would enable you to connect the slatebook directly to a computer (to copy files, root, etc), rather than having to use an SD, MicroSD or USB stick. Also, I suspect you might be able to charger from a USB cord and use your phone's wall adaptor, rather than having to lug around the powerbrick that comes with the slatebook.

        • i see, i dont need the cable then, just need a coffee table tablet or laptop, thought about macbook air but this is only 20% of that…

        • @Farrba: For under $200, I don't think you can go wrong with this tablet. It's not perfect, but it is very good for the price.

  • Anyone got any update on your order?

    • I initially chose to pick-up from Springvale but got an email saying the store doesn't actually stock Electronics (despite the option as available). Called them and paid $9 to get it shipped.

    • Yes, the one I ordered on 01 Jan 2015 just shipped out today via startrack express, they notified me by direct email.

    • I ordered with pickup from Bundall but haven't heard back yet. Not sure what they are up to.

      • I'd just go into store and pick it up. I ordered mine with delivery. The order was sent to the Bundall store for fullfillment, so I just drove there and picked it up and they refunded the postage costs. It did take them about 15 minutes to find the online order though haha…

        • I was thinking about doing that but my order status only says 'processed'.

        • @megaphat: Mine said processed too, which I believe means that the online team has sent the order to a store for processing. I'd just give the Bundall store a call today. The Bundall store has HEAPS in stock too, at least 20 apparently. Although the sale finished on Sunday according the floor manager.

        • @S3ISOR:
Yup you were right. I called them up and my tablet had been sitting there.
Waste of time but I'm very happy with the tablet!

    • I got shipping reference number by email today too.

  • Got this sent through this afternoon - We're experiencing a delay with your order. We estimate that your item(s) listed below will be ready in approximately 10 days, at which point we'll contact you.

    I ordered at 9am Friday 02/01/2015.

Just wanted to mention that it came with android 4.3 but towelroot v1 was able to root it.
    Will try maya custom rom.

    • I might give this a try as well. Did you do the OTA update before using Towelroot, or did you root straight out the box?

      • Straight out of the box. From my understanding, the current OTA update blocks towelroot.
        Also mayamod works very well!

        • yeah just installed it now, and its seems a lovely tab. Nothing could compare to this tab at this price. Great performance.

        • @Ronnnie: I also just installed MayaMod, very nice. I'm mucking around with it now to see if the performance is improved. (At least all the HP bloatware is gone now).

        • @S3ISOR: Well MayaMod really seems to speed the Slatebook up! Chrome seems to be much faster, as does general browsing and navigating the menus. A very nice customer MOD.

      • Excuse a noob, my first android device.
What is this OTA update? is it official firmware update direct from HP?
Came across this site https://www.otaupdatecenter.pro/ but I'm not able to figure out what it is for.

        Are these the right steps?
        1) First use Towelroot v1
        2) then Official firmware update (OTA update??)
        3) Boot to custom recovery mode (TWRP)
        4) Make Nandroid backup
        5) Install MayaMod

      • Noticed my Build Number atm is the older 4.3-17R20-03-23 (Dec 2013)

        http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/previousVersions?software…

The latest version is 4.3-17R20-05-24 (Aug 2014)
I assume I should be installing this but not sure what order

      • Alrite it looks like it's more complicated, theres the out of the box 4.3 that is rootable by towelroots, but if you go to the Aug 2014 version of 4.3 you can no longer root. people report that you also lose root if you were rooted already
        http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54885158&post…

        • @Kanasuke:
How did you unlock the bootloader? The forum post linked to is empty

        • @stumo:
just rooted mine, use Towelroot v1. higher versions don't work
This is the copy I used: http://files.mrzood.com/tr.apk (and worked)

my forum links are showing as empty for you? when i paste them into a different browser all of them are working for me

        • @Kanasuke:
No its saying on xda u have to unlock the bootloader to install myamod, not sure why. But the link on xda to unlock it are empty posts

        • @stumo:
not sure why but they're not showing as empty for me. maybe you have to be logged in?

        • @stumo:
sorry i am still a bit muddled by the terminology.
I unlocked bootloader using Geohot's Towelroot v1 which I linked above. Just install it and run, then press the 'Make it Rain' button

        • @Kanasuke:
ahh yeah sorry, it was megaphat above who installed myamod.

        • +1

Alrite it looks like it's more complicated, theres the out of the box 4.3 that is rootable by towelroots, but if you go to the Aug 2014 version of 4.3 you can no longer root. people report that you also lose root if you were rooted already

Yup you are correct. There appears to be some misinformation floating about.

The version that these devices come with out of the box (4.3 Dec 2013) is rootable via towelroot.
However towelroot is not compatible with the latest OTA update (4.3 Aug 2014).

If you update to the latest official OTA update (or any official OTA update) you will of course loose the root (and the ability to use towelroot). There is custom firmware (mayamod) and 'stock' rooted firmware based off the latest version.

If you have updated, my understanding is that the only way to root is with an expensive HP USB cable.

  • Mine was delivered today (Brisbane)

    • Thanks Emma,
Did you get any emails from Domayne as far as dispatch notices and the like?

      • +1

        No email from them.

  • bought mine on 01/01/2015, called them up just then. They said only have 6 in stock but allocated to 11 people…so 5 people wont get theirs!!

just confirmed with them, i was one of the lucky 6, and its on its way now! :)

Good luck to the rest of you!

  • I missed my delivery today dammit. Have rescheduled for tomorrow.

  • I had mine delivered today. Very pleased. Everything works perfectly. I'm glad this post has been well received and considered a bargain.

  • Mine will be delivered tomorrow :)

  • Don't know what's happening… I got the initial "processed" email when I purchased on Jan 1st.
Yesterday sent ticket asking where the order was at and they replied for me to contact Warriewood, which I did today.
They said I'd get a confirmation email followed the next day by a despatched email. Still waiting….

    • I only just got a shipped email with tracking number tonight.

  • Well my order arrived just now. No updated emails nonetheless. Very pleased, solid unit.

  • A question for those who received the unit, is the screen really bad as all the review suggests?

    • The screen is bad for a tab that originally priced around $500. Compared to other tabs at around $200 its probably better than most, it certainly a lot better than the $200 Aldi tabs (which isn't hard) I've seen. If you are hoping for iPad quality you'll be extremely disappointed.

    • Screen is slightly tinted but there are some apps to fix that.
Otherwise it's a solid screen, great res and fast processor.

    • screen is actually pretty good. Biggest issue is that it's too glossy so you get a lot of reflections.
      constrast ratio is ~600:1.
I haven't noticed any tint problem.

      • Colour accuracy seems to be a problem. I am happy nonetheless, its about what I was expecting based on the reviews.

  • got mine yesterday, gotta return it tomorrow and get refund, coz it's a faulty one! wi-fi doesnt work!! does anyone else have this problem?

    • I didn't have a WiFi problem, but the keyboard dock had a split in it (near the hinge) along the join in the black and white plastic. Domayne swapped it out for a new one.

  • White colour? : O I thought it's black…Did everyone get a white one?

    • +1

Yeah they only had white apparently. I asked in store if they had black, but the salesperson said that Domayne only imported/bought white from HP.

      • Thanks. Anyway, the price is too good: )

  • using it now, impressive tbh, same price for what we pay on samsung tab 4, which the quality isnt as good as this hp slate…

    • I could only imagine how terrible TW runs on a tablet with the s400 and 1.5gb of ram. 1280x800 tft screen I doubt would be as good as the 1920x1200 IPS one on the slate x2, but I haven't seen it to compare.

  • +2

Well after using one of these for a week I am still very impressed, and have bought 2 more. It turns out they are still for sale if you can find any stock around the place.
I would recommend you install MayaMod though. It completely rejuvenates the tablet and makes it feel super smooth, fast and modern.
Now there are 4 of these tabs in my family, all with MayaMad.

    • +2

When you factor in the decent keyboard with built in battery its unbelievable deal. You can pick up keyboard cases for any tab, but they tend to be atleast $50 and no where near as good as the slate x2 offering.

The only things I really find poor is the battery. On mine I am finding I can only get between 4-5 hours ost when just using as a typical tablet, of coarse you can get double that when plugged into keyboard. The battery doesn't drain when not being used like I've read elsewhere. The other neg is I find quite a few apps/games I use aren't compatible, of coarse you can sideload an APK, but still a slight inconvenience.

This the best bang for buck tablet I've ever used, nothing comes close for the money.

      • I think you're spot on RE the negatives. The relatively poor battery life did surprise me a bit.

  • +2

    Incompatible device fix

A lot of apps are incompatible because they require GPS. This tablet does not have a GPS.

One solution is to trick google to think this is a different model tablet.

Your device needs to be rooted.

You can root if you havent installed the latest OTA by installing towlroot http://files.mrzood.com/tr.apk

you can install market helper v 2.0 https://mega.co.nz/#!aZwnhKYb!AJagHCK3aZbCErvzgFX8hRoWV583mi…

    http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-trick-google-play-store-into-…

I set the device as a Tablet > ASUS transformer tab
    Set region in Australia, Telstra

    Now all apps are compatible.

    • +1

Thanks for the info, saves time googling. :D

FWIW if you get the updated market helper, you can change it to a shield tablet, then get nvidia tegra exclusive titles like half life 2. I am downloading that now. :)

  • +1

hl 2 plays on this tablet, you just have to plug a controller into the usb port. I am using a logitech controller.

    • Portal also works. Very cool having such high quality games on a tablet.

  • Anyone has any idea how to let this HP slatebook X2 read an andriod phone from the USB? I have tried and the phone did not come up in the tablet. I want to copy photos from the mobile to the tablet.

    Thanks in advance.

    • Use your WiFi - you just need some sort of sharing or syncing app on each device (DropBox etc.)

      • Thanks Nom. I know that would be the way to go in iOS world. But in Android world there are direct ways to do it via an USB cable. As this table has a full size USB, i just want to figure out doing it using this USB port. Also there are a lot of photos and i just don't have enough DropBox space for them.

        • ES File Explorer would let you copy to a file share on another machine on your network.

Or plug phone into PC, copy photos off. Plug tablet in and copy photos on?

Or use a micro SD if phone supports it.

Otherwise if this has USB host (it does right?) just connect it direct to phone. Ideal if your phone supports acting as a USB drive but should work if set to MTP (media) or PTP (camera). Might need an app to mount it properly.

          Multiple ways to do this.

  • I got this when the deal was on.

Can I get this connected directly to a PC so that I can transfer files into it? The USB seems to be OTG - for usb flash drive etc.

    • You can but you need a special cable which plugs into the charge port. HP sells this cable but its pretty expensve.
Why they didn't include it or just use micro-usb is beyond me.
