These are a great little machine for home use. Partner it with a good grinder, some fresh beans and a little practice and it's pretty easy to get quality espresso from these things.

A PID-controlled machine for under $400 is spectacular value. I've just purchased one as a stand-in while our Vibiemme Domobar Junior goes in for much-needed boiler surgery (repairs which will likely cost more than the brand new Breville!)

I have this unit in silver.. The red colour is usually $40 more expensive than the silver.. 10/10 machine… With practice, u can attain genuine pro style coffee with this unit

Never seen it this cheap.. Bargain!

  • What is a PID-controlled machine?

It would have been a few keystrokes easier to just ask this question on google.

Now you've caused me to waste my time an effort..

Read this, it's a pretty decent overview, albeit for a different machine:

      http://www.pidsilvia.com/What_is_PID.htm

    • +2

      Technical explanation: http://www.expertune.com/tutor.aspx

Plain English: A PID is a microcircuit that ensures the water at the brew head is the same temperature all the time. Without a PID, you have to temperature-surf the water to get the best results from your machine.

I fitted a PID to my first espresso machine (a Rancilio Silvia MK1) and the controller, at the time, was almost $200. (EDIT: Now almost $250! http://www.jetblackespresso.com.au/shop/p/rancilio-silvia-pi…)

      • Thanks for your response :-) Much appreciated!

  • I almost want one for work…

When my other machine comes back from espresso hospital (http://dibartoli.com.au) then this BES840 will be heading into the office to live. :-)

  • Comparing Sunbeam EM6910 with grinder and Breville BES840+grinder(EM0480)
almost the same price for both machines..
    Which one would be better?

    • I have the breville and it's fantastic.

I'm also really impressed with their "smart grinder", which is foolproof, and gets great results.

Not sure about which would be cheaper though.

EM6910 is a dual thermoblock, this Breville is a single thermoblock. Difference is dual allows you to steam milk at the same time as pull shots. Single will only allow either or.

Also check if this Breville provides single wall filters. The EM6910 provides both single and dual walled filters, but the only one worth caring about is single wall filters, as the dual wall filters create fake crema and are not worth your time.

Also I dunno about the Breville, but my EM6910 wakes the dead every morning via both coffee and NOISE.

EDIT: EM6910, when I bought it, has 1 year warranty on the machine, but 5 years on the pump (recently had warranty repair on steam pump after 4 years). Breville has 1 year warranty only.

      • I have this machine, I can confirm it comes with both Single wall and double wall filters.

      • the only one worth caring about is single wall filters, as the dual wall filters create fake crema and are not worth your time.

        This.

Unless you're doing yourself the disservice of using preground beans, then the double walled filters can be thrown out with the machine packaging ;-)

I would get BES840 and Smart Grinder Pro BCG820 $199 from Myer
      http://www.myer.com.au/shop/mystore/offers/s15-sts-elec/brev…

      • +2

The BCG820 is an excellent grinder if it's the second generation unit (aka "Smart Grinder Pro").

Before you buy, ask the shop staff to remove the bean hopper and confirm that there's an adjustment screw head atop the burr stack. If it's not there and the grind is not fine enough for good espresso then it has to be shimmed with stainless steel shims. The screw in the gen 2 machines allows adjustment with small flat blade screw driver.

I don't have the spare dosh to buy one of these coffee machines but I do have a $100 Myer gift voucher and was wondering, if I use it towards buying the Breville Smart Grinder Pro for $199 and then buy some fresh beans, will my Bialetti stove top espresso coffee taste even better compared to using pre-ground Lavazza coffee from Woollies?

        • +2

          @bender:
Definitely. Lavazza is crap compared to freshly roasted, freshly ground beans.
You will definitely smell and taste the difference.

IMHO, both turn out very good espresso for a domestic machine.

I've switched from recommending Sunbeam to recommending Breville based on Breville's better after-sales service, cost of parts/consumables (eg the water filters) and the general quality of the supplied kit.

      For a sub $600 setup, the BES840 + EM0480 is bloody good bang-for-buck.

  • I've picked up the machine, dialled-in the grinder (Macap M4D) and ran a few test shots. It's a great little espresso machine. Here's the first latte http://imgur.com/2yRrx4v (ASIDE: The machine comes with a VERY high quality stainless steel milk jug which I'd be happy to pay ~$35 for on its own).

    • wtf. how do you unvote your own stupid downvote.. was trying to upvote.

was also gonna say it seems a bit mismatched for your Macap lol

      • +1

        LMAO :-)

  • Does anyone know how this would compare to the old Sunbeam EM5900?

I have one now and it's died. Not sure whether to spend the $200 to fix it (which is what I paid for it!) or get a new machine like this. I'd love to get a EM7000 or Rancilla but OzBargain has already murdered my bank account (TV, car headunit, RC crap).

    • Just get a new one like this +1

      • I like your thinking :D

Soon needed to have to have parental block on Ozbargain website……..
          Very evil :-P

  • How does it compare to the 870?
