  • Add 20% to your budget with AU dollar diving to actually accommodate, eat and drink there!

Plus their exorbitant hotel taxes, tips, etc… and the fact that everything there is just a lot dearer in general!

I have travelled a lot and my saying is "you never remember how much you paid, only the good times you had" and Hawaii is amazing. YOLO.

I agree, and I loved Hawaii… Just not Honolulu as much as other parts!
Oh, and you do remember some things… Like $17 for a beer in KL! ;)

        • You paid 51 MYR for a beer?

        • @BartholemewH:
Yeah, approximately! It was a Heiniken bottle from one of the actual shops on Petaling Street!
And admittedly, it is a predominantly Islamic nation!

        • @Snoop:
I remember malaysia as being very easy on the hip pocket. I mustn't drink enough beer.

        • @BartholemewH:
Yeah, everything else is cheap… especially down that street!
But when travelling between different countries, you have to remember which currency it is you're actually converting! (ie. We'd just been into Thailand before there!)

      • I agree 100%! I didn't think it was that expensive to be honest. I wish i had added 20% for shopping, but accommodation was cheaper than here, food was about the same and alcohol was really cheap! Plus, the experience was worth every penny.

A true ozbargainer would remember how much they've paid, then pass the savings tips to you.

I'll have time to YOLO when the dollar strengthens.

        • +1

Unlikely. There is nothing that indicates a stronger dollar should be expected. 3 banks already expecting 50bp rate cut next year, dollar going down. Sorry for your loss.

  • Cheap, but keep in mind :no luggage, meals, entertainment. Might be OK for short flights, but 10hrs?

  • just booked on tuesday for $700 return. ffs

    • Looks like it's the migoreng diet for you when you get there :P

  • Thinking of going. Any recommendation on decent budget hotels or service apartments?

Hi Joe888, I just went 4 weeks ago and we stayed at the Vive Hotel. It is 2 blocks from the beach and minimal facilities. The rooms are quite small. HOWEVER, You do get continental breakfast and there is so much to do in Waikiki that you wont spend any time in your room. We got 1 room (2 single beds) for AUD$144 a night (after Expedia discount).
The staff were so helpful after a few debacles with dodgy tour companies. Most people we spoke to were paying $200-300 a night elsewhere, so if you want something a bit bigger or on the beach/more facilities, I would look into that as a budget.
If you know where to go, the food isn't that expensive. Lots of decent lunch buffets for $15 or $16, Cheesecake factory has meals fit for 2 people mostly under $20. Compared to Australia, Hawaii is still a lot cheaper over all and you will have the BEST time!!
Main note, take lots of spending money - it's better than we imagined! :)

      • Hi Alohagirl, Thanks for sharing your tips and experience. I'll search for cheap airfares and budget hotel room prices.

I stayed at the coconut waikiki (a joie de vivre hotel) and it was very pleased for the price. Look it up on trip advisor. I definitely wouldn't stay further inland than this hotel.

  • wow this took ages! it has been live since last night. $500 direct flughts to hawaii is amazing! shame its all out of school holidays.
