It uses CPU used in laptops, it is on Windows so you can pretty much do whatever you can do on an ultrabook? Needs a keyboard and as a tablet it fails on many ends but I wouldn't say this price is a rip off.

So a 11" MacBook Air with the same config is currently priced at $1,419. The MacBook Air doesn't have a touch screen or pen input. You can get a touch keyboard for about $70 now.

Not quite a valid comparison as Apple have their own unique little ecosystem along with their Apple premium pricing.

And anyone who buys an MacBook for sole purpose of running Windows are simply plebs.

        • On the contrary for the build quality and weight Apple pricing is very competitive. There are very few devices in the PC world that can match the MacBook pricing for the same build and weight.

        • +12

Why isn't windows as much of an ecosystem as ios?

Amazing how apple fans always find a way to justify the ridiculous price of Apple products.

I'm a SharePoint developer and a large majority of SharePoint devs (including those who work at Microsoft) use a MacBook Pro to run the Windows virtual machines.

The performance of the Macbook SSD is out of this world.

        • @merill:
Sony Vaio Pro 13 beats in weight res price etc

        • @thelastnoob: Sorry can't find any online at this price for this config (256GB SSD & 8GB RAM). Although the Vaio Pro 13 has a bigger screen.

        • Sorry, negged by mistake and I cannot change now.

        • @merill: Most consumers will be running windows primarily and not as virtual machines

enterprise use is not a valid comparison for consumer use

        • @merill:
          yeah i just checked
          the 4g ram & 128hdd would go for $800

        • @dosada:
That was not my point. Point was that Apple ecosystem is different from Windows' - not that it is superior.

So comparisons between Macs to Windows machines cannot be made 100% directly.

The only way to make a direct comparison is to suppose Windows as primary OS on a Macbook, which then it is really overpriced.

Not sure about others, I was just waiting for a laptop that is light and can put a 256gb sdd for better than $899. My light requirement is just same weight as ultrabooks. Please shine your godly light upon me…

I currently use a Surface Pro 1 (bought it last Christmas when it was going for $799 but only 4GB RAM). This is my only device.

At work I plug into a Targus USB 3 dock and work with 3 external monitors, my keyboard and mouse. When I work from home I have an external mouse and plug into a single monitor (bought an extra charger for the home). Use it as a pseudo-tablet on the one hour train ride.

Best if all it's comparatively very light and doesn't hurt my back unlike the previous laptops I used to lug around.

One device to rule them all and works perfectly for how I use it.

All other times I use my large 6" phablet.

Purchased this from HN recently. Only other unit that came close to this was Yoga 2 but with $300 additional costs. SP3 has the same processor, larger screen but with additional cost of ~$500. Yet to realy test it as a tablet. Most issues were with getting used to Windows 8. Have a usb mouse and kb connected as well as external monitor. Need a mini display adapter to connect an external monitor, just got a $10 unit from Ebay and it works fine.

  • awesome unit, i have one since last year
    great price too

    im reading:
"If your looking for absolute performance this beats the Surface Pro 3 also comes with the better Pen with more pressure points than Pro 3"

so basically is it a flop that microsoft create new product pro 3 that is inferior compare with pro 2?

    • The Pro 2 was leaning more towards the PC side, the Pro 3 brings in more tablet-y features and sacrifices a bit on the performance (for the same i5 config). If you go for the Pro 3 i7 config then you get the best of both worlds but also pay a lot for it.

I'm an ozbargainer and my Pro 1 which I bought for $799 is still going strong so I'll wait till next Christmas to get my Pro 3 i7 when the price drops to the sub $1000 mark.

    • Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 2 uses same CPU, one has bigger screen, smaller room for cooling, I think it's obvious that Surface Pro 2 has bigger advantage on the performance.

Be fair, I think the screen looks absolutely gorgeous on SP3, I was so tempted to get one solely because it has better ratio for document editing.

EDIT: Of course, I was referring to the i5 models of SP3, not sure about i7s. Since I've heard that the main performance issues come from the throttling issues, I'd assume that i7s wouldn't fair that well as well.

pro 3 uses an ntrig pen
it allows for a thinner screen so less parallax

downside is that it doesnt have as much pressure sensitivity as Wacom pens which the majority of artists use
That being said the target demographic wont even notice

Also they moved to more tablet centric focus. And the larger 12" screen is more akin to an A4 piece of paper
The improved hinge and keyboards allow for better adjustment to use on your lap as well

The pro 2 on the other hand used wacom pens, which are more popular and dont require a battery
The refresh later on introduced a faster processor (1.9ghz clock, which is faster than the one listed here for sale)

THe only downside is that it was thicker, but its not as big and wide as the surface pro 3. Power wise they are the same, with the pro 3 having marginally better battery life
The pro 2 also has the option of a battery cover that doubles the battery life at the cost of weight

For all other intents and purposes, if you care about real estate and battery life. The pro 3 is better
If you care about raw performance, price and dont care about screen real estate or prefer something 10" vs 12" then the pro 2 is a steal at current prices

The best way to think about them without focusing on technical specs is that they really are very similar machines and you are only comparing form factors and price.

Also you can snag a core i5 128gb version for around $600 delivered or i5 256gb 8gb ram version for $700 delivered on ebay second hand with an included battery cover. Most of these are in great condition (i bought one yesterday)

  • Switched from Pro 1 to Pro 3. Would not want to go back. But yes, lots more $$$. But bigger screen and stand are just so much better.

  • Good price. I'm very happy with my Surface 2 for browsing/mail/media on couch, bed, transport, holiday…and my dual-screen desktop for anything serious. Would like the digitiser pen though…

  • Any1 know if this tablet can run mmporg game? Even on the lowest resolution?

    • +1

yes it can run starcraft, skyrim, wow, dota, csgo, etc etc

    • -1

I actually would not recommend doing so… I used to play LOL on my Surface Pro 1, it runs it fine, but the problem was, it became really hot. It didn't shut itself down or anything like that, but it's just that it heated up a lot which wouldn't be good for the machine.

  • -2

only i5 processor need something that will process 4k video editing for this money.

    • +1

the bigger the marketing buzzword term, the better the processing power, nevermind the actual technical capability lolamirite

Its not an alienware, must be fail

      • +1

someone wants to 'process 4k' on a 10" tablet?

        lol?

        • my thoughts exactly

        • Why would you want to spend $900 - $1000 on a 10inch tablet for browsing the Internet and sending emails?

        • +1

@Rog1995: It's more of a laptop/tablet hybrid that can do most of the stuff, if not all, that ultrabooks can do.

EDIT: If you argue that there are laptops that can do things that SP2 can do that costs less than this, probably yes. But, I don't think you will be able to find a laptop, light as this, that can be used as a tablet, that has build quality like this, that has decent tech support and a pen input.

Also, same arguments can be said with laptops, why buy laptops costing over $1000 when you can buy a desktop that does everything that laptop can but is cheaper. Because performance doesn't mean everything all the time, form factor etc etc is really important.

        • @AznMitch:
I see your point. Just doesn't make much sense from my perspective. Each to there own.

        • @Rog1995:

Idk probably same reason girls buy Mac books to go on Facebook and twitter

  • My colleague have one of this, bought together with the Type Cover last year for $1600+ from HN, only have praise for it. I have a HP Folio 13 Ultrabook from 2 years ago that I carry when I need to travel overseas and it does everything I need for, if I don't have this, I will be seriously considering buying this now.

  • +2

Also, I think they should bundle the type cover for free or maybe for $49, $100+ for a key board will jack the price up to more than $1K and I knows it is a barrier a lot of people have, paying $999 is ok but paying $1,000 is too much.
