  I bought an infra red ear one from DX that had decent reviews for $7 from memory, and after 2 years of regular use I can safely say that it is consistent with my armpit or any other orifice thermometer.

  The biggest issue with the latter was working out what temperature is high, so many websites say anything from 38 to 40, but you get an idea after a while (39 I settled on, or a bit lower if you don't see a decrease after administering paracetamol)
