I bought one (sadly at a much higher price but still cheaper than most retailers) and am disappointed by it.
The device and the patient need to have been in the same room exposed for 30mins+ so the device is at the room temp the person is in.
Only then can you get readings.

So its useless to take with you in a first aid kit or baby bag, store in a medicine cabinet or box of medical things to take out to use when you need a measurement.
The readings when not following those instructions are wildly off, either hot pushing toward 40c or much colder showing 35c.

I ended up getting another in ear one with those pop on/off caps but also an under arm style one for infants.
I put this one up against one that was in my Drs surgery and theirs seemed spot on having already been in the room, the one I pulled from a bag was out by 1.5c which is enough to say hey we're heading to the hospital for a newborn.

So use it exactly as instructed I guess as just random casual use without following those instructions do not yield valid results.

Store specific. Not available at the Perth Airport store and listed as an inactive item.

Great deal. However forehead thermometers are generally thought to be low accuracy, temporal artery thermometers are very similar but a fair bit better I think

    • They are mostly rubbish. Some are so inaccurate that a fever temperature shows as normal. Doctors, nurses, and paramedics use probe or ear thermometers.

The medical professionals seem to use the Welch Allyn Thermoscan Pro 6000 Digital Ear Thermometer. It is the most accurate I've come across. Current price is around $291.50 e.g. from the AMA shop (I paid $338 a few years ago.)

Choice ratings of thermometers in Nov 2024. I don't have access to the latest report. Previously in May 2022, the top two from Choice were the Braun IRT 6030 ThermoScan 5 Infrared Ear Thermometer (77% expert rating) and Famidoc FDIR-V22 Infrared Non-Contact Thermometer (77% expert rating).

Might as well get the ones from Aliexpress for under $4. Seems to work pretty well

    • Can you recommend one?

      • Oops prices seem to have gone up, last time I looked they were $3-5 now seems to be $6. I can't link Aliexpress links Itll block my comment. Go to Choice and search up infrared temperature. I have the purple one with 3 round purple buttons on the side. I sorted by price and one is coming up for $2.66

          Same.

Yep, works fine. I also have a couple of these ones.

Yeah, I paid A$4.89 for the purple one.

$10.70 delivery. Sort by price, select free delivery, pick the cheapest but then also be sure to check the "recommendations" under the listing; AliEx notoriously omits the best deals from search results 🤷🏼‍♂️

@wisdomtooth: Ah yeah, it's annoying when I search by photo it won't let me set any filters.

    $9.97* according to your picture.

  • Great find OP! Wonder why its so heavily discounted.. ?

Just use your hand to feel the temperature; don't need this.

When I first became a parent and had NFI what I was doing, it was pretty useful

      • +1

As well as noting the absolute temperature, it's a good idea to monitor a temperature and if it's rising then do something about it. Not everyones hands are that well calibrated!

Don't try it on a cranky old man. Doctor did this to my dad and was bluntly told where to go.

  • Wow, great deal

You will need a lie-down and one of these after a visit to Costco Casuarina (Kwinana) on the weekend. That place is feral.

    • +1

Oh do share. I have never been to a Costco, I didn't know there were bogan Costcos.

      • Bogans aren’t the only feral group in our society.

        • You think Succulent Synth is referring to crackheads or actual ferals? They are nearly the same thing.

@Loopholio: A bit of everything. Mostly lot's of large angry people who will ram their trolley through a baby in a pram to get to the giant 5kg tray of double-choc brownies that they probably inhale as a morning snack.

I think we paid around $70 for this one. It's hit and miss. Often it would tell me that my body temperature is below freezing. Other times it would tell me that my daughter and I have the exact same temperature, while the internal temperature was saying that her blood is basically boiling.

I don't think it's an issue with this one thermometer. I think it's just that external laser based thermometers can't be that accurate. That's why hospitals still stick it in you.

    • +1

Had the same issues, device and patient have to be in the same room for 30+ mins to be at the same temp to provide valid results.

  • Thanks op, got one

  • Stop pointing these to your head!

  • Does it work on sixheads? Asking for a friend.

  • Once upon a time not long ago, I remember people willing to pay big money for this type of thermometers during covid. 😆

    • its still a big money on most other websites
