  • Not a bad deal, I'd wait until there's a coupon code especially if you're planning to buy multiple Starter Packs.

    • If it's not excluded.

      • Wasn't last time or for the current GIMME25 coupon. But who's gonna buy 10 packs?

  • Google play credit? why?

You can use your prepaid balance to buy google play content

What is the new 'Bill my Telstra account' payment option in Google Play?

If you're a Telstra mobile customer with an Android device you can now charge your Google Play purchases, such as apps, games, movies, books and even music, to be billed to your Post-Paid account or if you're on Telstra Pre-Paid you can pay for your Google Play purchases from your main account balance providing you have sufficient funds available.

Why when I sign up do I need to register my details including address?

Due to privacy rules Telstra doesn't provide Google any information about our customers in Australia and as Google needs information like name and address to meet global money laundering and other regulatory rules they need your details. Google are not able to use this information for any marketing purposes.

Problem is you need to buy it through 3G connection. If you want an App for your Wifi tablet the App may not be able to be purchased on your 3G phone due to incompatibility with the phone.

        • No, you can buy it thorugh WiFi. Just put the Telstra sim in when you purchase.

On the downside, the $10 deals are never gonna come back :(

Yes they are, don't give up!

          @maxhu:
Okay so you can buy through Wifi.
But as mentioned above, if App is incompatible with the device holding the SIM you cannot buy it for your Wifi only device (eg Tablet) using discounted Telstra credit.

Think how many low powered Android phones there are, which have many incompatible Apps, compared to tablets which are more reasonably powered and more compatible in general.

          @chyawala:
Seriously dude, have you actually tried it? I have bought a couple Starter packs before and put it on my old HTC Evo (a 2010 phone). I can purchase all the apps I run on my G2/Oneplus One/Galaxy Note 10. The key to compatibility is Android 4.0. Once you get to that, you can purchase almost any apps you want.

        • @chyawala:

I have the sim on a nexus 5, and I can buy apps from the nexus 7 (same google account), i just need to choose bill to telstra.

      • will this work if you are on a contract?

        • yes, both pre and post paid customers

        • How do you go about adding prepaid credit to your post paid account?

        • You'll have to switch SIM cards to use it as google play credit.

      • -1

Another issue to keep in mind is that when you get down to your last $3 or so you won't be able to use it on Google Play, as Telstra keeps it as buffer for potential unbilled data usage charges.

        • +3

not true. you can use all the credits.

        • I got 2 of them which has 4c and 2c left so not sure what you are on about.

        • Hmm… maybe that's only when you're on 3G/4G then, or else it's changed. That was certainly the case last year when I used it to spend on my $10 prepaid SIMs from AusPost last year.

Good to know, thanks for the correction.

Just finished fixing the mess yesterday from the time this was offered. Make sure you check the expiry date on these packs. I was sent an expired one and then on exchange attempted to be given another expired one. Combined with other recent Tricky Dicky disasters, they're quickly making a place on my approach with caution list.

    • I have activated expired one through Telstra chat, Just tell them where did you buy it and they activate it without any issues

    • I just got mine and it was expired. Emailed them requesting replacement. Hopefully they respond quickly and send me another one (not expired).

  • Can starter packs be used for Google play credit? I thought it was only for top up vouchers. Great deal if it can :)

    • @ shiningstars

Can starter packs be used for Google play credit?

Yes they can (even ones used for mobile broadband)
already bought some Apps with one i activated a few days ago.

so if i'm not a telstra customer, but i want to make use of this, how do i do it?
is it - put in the prepaid SIM, access google play, buy app, then it'll prompt me to use telstra credit?
after the purchase, i can just swap back to my original sim?

    • That's pretty much how it works, you'll need to set up Telstra billing for your google account as a step in the process.

so if i'm not a telstra customer, but i want to make use of this, how do i do it?

    Activate the Telstra sim.

    Then do as you described…

    • cool thanks.
might have to give this a go!

  • I have tried and it works for Windows Phone Apps/Google Play Apps…. BUT Can this be used for Apple Store Apps?

    • No, Apple don't allow billing to your Telstra prepaid account.

  • Only appears to be available for home delivery $4.95 but good find.

  • So for the Google credit. does it get you $30 worth or is it not the full amount?

    • You get to use $30 for google play but still retain the call credit if your on a cap

      • Do we need to use up all $30 or forfeit it after 30 days?

Does paying with the card affect the data quota? i.e. Can I use this on my phone for a month for calls, text and data + get $30 worth of apps? Or all those get reduced pro-rata according to the remaining credit?

  • How much data do you get with these $30 SIM's when using in an ipad? The last ones I bought included 3GB but can't see the amount of data mentioned on these ones.

  • All Tablets NOW 2GB + $2MB
    or ~0.8 GB for phone.

With range like 0.8-2GB, could be sensibel use credit, on Google Play. Meantime, Optus has become 1.2GB (30 x 0.04GB) +15 hours, valid< 180 days values. (4GB.30days)

  • Anyone knows if/how I can add credit to Hangouts account to make phone call using Telstra credit? Was prompted to install Hangouts Dialer on phone and I have not got a chance to try it yet because I need to add some credit. Would be handy if I can use Telstra credit for this. Thanks.
