  • That is just the normal price for Eneloop chocolate. A genuine deal will have all new PS4 games and Pre-order<$49.

    • That should be the normal price for Panasonic chinese Eneloops…

    • Just out of my curiosity,,,,,why eneloop batteries are so popular or widely mentioned here in OZB?

  • OMG eneloops again.

    • -1

Yep. It is that chocolate AGAIN! Why not offer at least tropical to make something different. Alkaline is clearance, not a deal please.

      • Maybe because the choc ver. is cheaper to import from China than the tropicals since they are made there now?

        • New Tropicals are made in china too apparently :(

  • I payed 20 for the eneloops..

  • Dick Smith Eneloops.

  • Why are Dick Smith spamming Eneloops?
Seriously did they over order by a huge margin?
Its weird considering they have four and two packs that are dearer and never discounted:

They're spamming them because OzB'ers buying Eneloops is the only thing keeping them in business…their lifeline if you will

  • Yawn

  • Is the Eneloop Overnight Charger worth getting? I don't have a charger.

    • +6

The problem with overnight chargers is that they always push a fixed amount of energy into the battery, irrespective of how much energy it needs. The "extra" energy turns into heat, and the heat builds up pressure inside the cell, rutpuring the over-pressure seal. Once the seal has ruptured, the battery's electrolyte dries out and the battery's capacity drops and will continue to drop with time, and you end up with a useless battery.

There is a way to safely use overnight chargers and get good battery life - basically discharge each battery before charging, and under-charge them by removing them from the charger before the overcharging starts. You won't get the full capacity of the battery like you would with a smart charger, but you'll get at least three-quarters of the capacity.

      To do this:

      • Discharge each battery INDIVIDUALLY - single-battery LED torches are good for this task. When the torch stops producing light, the battery is discharged. If you have four batteries, you'll need four torches, or cycle them one-at-a time through a single torch.

      • For 2000mAh (AA Eneloop) batteries, a "full" charge would push 2800mAh of energy into the battery (charging isn't 100% efficient). You want to err on the lower side of this, perhaps putting 2000 to 2500mAh into the battery. Check the charger, I think this charger charges at 250mA, so you want to charge for 8 to 10 hours. Set an alarm on your mobile phone to remind you to remove the batteries.

      • Check the temperature of the batteries when you remove them from the charger. If you can hold them comfortably, and they are cool or slightly warm (like human skin temperature), they haven't been overcharged. Always check the temperature, sometimes batteries lose capacity for no reason and then you'd be overcharging them. The temperature test will tell.

In case you're wondering, the reaon for discharging the batteries individually is because when batteries are in a pack, invariably one battery will go flat a little faster than the others. The device you're powering usually won't stop drawing current from the pack at this time, so the flat battery will now be receiving a reverse-charge from the current still flowing. This kills batteries REALLY quickly. Discharging the batteries individually ensures they never get a reverse charge.

      • +4

I forgot to say, with the torches for discharging the batteries, you don't want a high-powered torch. Use a torch that would normally take 2-3 hours to discharge a fully-charged battery, or if your torch has selectable brightness modes, choose a mode that will take this long.

Reason for this is because batteries can be overheated during discharge too. If you have a super-bright torch, that flattens the battery in an hour or less, you can rupture the battery's pressure seal during discharge.

      • Thanks for that. Perhaps it makes more sense to just get a smart charger. Deal please DSE!

        • Hasn't been a deal on smart charger for months and the smart charger is $20 More

  • +1

    Hello Dick Smith!!!

We want a deal on the Smart Charger!!!

    • +2

Don't hold your breath. A dumb charger means the average customer will return every few years for replacement batteries. That means more sales, and more customers in-store. DSE wants that, it's probably quite deliberate that they only discount the dumb charger.

      • +1

Just buy a smart charger from elsewhere.

This needs to be put on every Chinese made Eneloop deal:

Review says that it is subpar and substandard of the high quality eneloop we once knew

    • +1

      Hence, the lower prices.

      • Ah… It is the Chocolate vs Tropical discussion again.

        • +1

Actually, even the Tropicals are now made in China as well apparently!

BTW, I'm the author of the review linked to in the other thread…

        • @OnTheMark: What isn't made in China these days :)

        • @OnTheMark:
          Hi OnTheMark,
Thanks for your tests, they are really helpful in showing what is going on "behind the wrapper" with these Chinese Eneloops vs the Japanese ones. One thing I have to say, even though I believe the tests show the general direction and confirm earlier results, technically it is only a group of two batteries which could include a variety of random factors, such as a bad batch, a previously used batch, inconsistent testing tools or methods etc etc.
What I am getting to is; do you have any plans to expand the tests, perhaps swapping the test equipment over and using Chinese Eneloops from other batches to gather more result data?
Once again thanks for you excellent work.

        • @OnTheMark:

great thread there and interesting that Panasonic haven't gotten back to you after you sent them your results

        • +1

          @King Tightarse:

Thanks for the feedback King Tightarse!

With 2 batteries out of the same packet, a bad batch is a possibility. I've never heard of a bad batch of Eneloops before though, so if that was the case, then that would be a bad sign in and of itself!

Previously used batch - I certainly didn't use them before testing them. If used batteries are being sold as new, then that's also a bad sign - I don't think that would be likely at all though.

As for inconsistent testing, I tested one of each origin in 2 separate chargers, so I'd think that would make it unlikely, but not completely beyond the realms of possibility.

I'm planning to run more tests with Chinese Eneloops from a new packet so that I can confirm these results. These tests take quite a long time to run though, so it will be a while before I have new results to post! I do have some AAA Eneloops running a similar test - they're approaching about half way through, so the results for those won't take as long.

        • +1

          @OnTheMark:
That's great to hear, OTM. Each extra set of tests adds to the validity. Please post your results when done. I am sure many people here are keen to see them.
Oh and I certainly hope Panasonic show some well-deserved respect to you and reply to your emails! Your feedback can help them. They need to move right now to ensure they don't damage the goodwill the Eneloop brand has built over many years. Word travels might fast these days.

        • @King Tightarse:

Yep - I agree that more tests helps to validate the results!

I'll definitely be posting the results to CandlePowerForums and most likely will post a link to them when a relevant bargain comes up - if I don't, I'm sure that someone else will…

I agree that Panasonic should be doing more to protect the Eneloop brand image!

        • @OnTheMark:

          Stick with Turnigys?
I have a few packs of Eneloops but Turnigys have higher cap + similar price if bought in bulk

        • +1

          @cwongtech:

If you're needing the higher capacity, I'd say got for the Turnigys because they're much cheaper than the Eneloop XX and in another test I did, they actually survived for more cycles!

If capacity isn't important and they're not being subjected to lots of cycles or high discharge rates, I'd probably go for whichever worked out cheaper at the time.

For lots of cycles or high discharge rates, I'd probably go for the Japanese made Eneloops.

  • Hope they have a deal on the smart charger soon. Don't want my eneloops to decay quickly on a overnight charger.
    Please DSE, make it happen!

    • I think the last time it was on special was back in March

    • Good price killed by post only again.

      • No you just need to be smart and buy more than 1 pack to get the best deal out of it

  • Small note, I bought the Samsung 28" UHD590 Monitor and it offered me free postage.

    • Yeah that's because it's originally over $500

  • Good to see the LG 49" UHD TV make a comeback, it'd been out of stock for a while.

Although, I am under strict instructions that we do not need a new TV…

    • Not a UHD not yet anyway, maybe xmas next year :)

  • UA55H6400AW is a crap screen…Dark/Faded/Fuzzy picture and colors wrong (white can be have yellow tinge in picture).
Samsung says that this is a limitation of their new panels and not due to Micro Dimming :(
ES8000 screen from a few years ago is perfect !!!

I am upgrading to UA55H7000 200MHz model for $249 extra but this does not seem perfect either…
Picture seemed dark in store, but looked clearer (less Faded/Fuzzy) and colors looked more accurate.
    Mine being delivered tomorrow morning.
